Having seen Chathe River/Pakala Nadi for the past 25 years, I've noticed that there used to be lots of rocks (big and small) all around the river. But these days there are no longer any rocks there because people extracted it for business purposes. Now every monsoon season, the river gets wider because the soil is not protected by the rocks. Rivers changing its course is natural, especially when there are no trees or rocks to protect the soil from eroding. Even retaining walls will not save your land from falling into the river. The same has happened along the banks of Brahmaputra River.

@@NagaGigs the only solution I can see is for the government to building a whole new concrete embankment throughout the whole river, like the way they do in Japan or in Chennai. When I was living in Chennai, I noticed some of their rivers (Example: Cooum River) which cuts through the city and into the Bay of Bengal are given concrete base and side embankments/walls. They did it very well, but not in every place. They only built it in and around commercial and densely populated residential zones, so as to protect the land from eroding during floods. It is quite similar in Japan too. The way they slope the river banks make sure that the river don't cut the soil too easily. I think the government should start such similar project from Referral Hospital area, since it is a vital public infrastructure under risk from soil erosion.
