Great to have you back, Dylan. We've missed you! Agreed. As one gets older, and hopefully wiser in this hobby, you learn that it is not a sprint but a marathon, gathering those hours of building blocks we call pixels to create a great image. SL 17 looks great - well done with a superb set of images.

What improved images for me. 1: Improving post processing methods, I find the proper histogram makes a big difference, also different ways to use pixel math. 2: The telescope, I bought a Tak FSQ 106EDX4 this scope coupled with the ASI 6200 really is something. I can discern detail even with the 530mm scope, similar to the EdgeHD 1100 with a reducer. Yes minute details are more evident in the Edge, since your magnified, however the overall detail is something. The last thing that I am looking forward to, is the AP1100 due here in a week or so. The HDX110 (EQ8) has this issue with the RA and perfect balance, it likes east side heavy, if its balanced it gets goofy. The AP1100 I also plan on going unguided, did get the absolute encoders on that. The plan is to dual image as well, to speed up data collection. Either way Dylan, all the little stuff adds up more than the obvious stuff. Editing can make or break an image as well, especially if you have good base data.

Dylans tips and tricks work. Although Dylan i do Dark frames usually twice a year. Winter and summer due to the change in outside ambient air temp. Summer I can not cool the camera to -20 more like -12 but winter time I can easily achieve -20 so I take a set of darks for fall and winter and a set for spring an summer. Flats need to be done nightly especially if you are rotating the camera.

I've been trying to follow tip #1 personally. The night sky isn't going anywhere anytime soon, so I've been trying to take my time on targets. If I miss out on a particular one, there's always next year. You had some amazing images in this video (especially the planets)! If all of that was done with a 1% quality increase, then I'm sure that 2% would be exponential!
@jimbundy8449

All joking aside those are great and spot on tips Dylan! I as well started using calibration frames with my RASA 11 and as you say mainly for the vignette correction in my images. The Sky Watcher EQ8-Pro Rh was so well worth the money, I had a Celestron CGE Pro Mount and it was hit and miss at times but this thing is dead on every time, I have a observatory but always break my stuff down every night and with the ZWO ASIAIR Pro it makes polar alignment, focusing, plate solving so fast that I’m shooting usually after 10 to 15 minutes. It’s amazing the difference in astrophotography from years ago 😳 Awesome images Dylan 👍🏼 Keep up the good work!

I've already fully embraced calibration frames, maintaining a Master Bias, Dark library and taking Flats after every session. But Tip #3 has been the big game changer for me, and it requires serious discipline. You aren't wrong when you say be brutal. I captured 60 subs last night on a target, and only kept 16. I think part of that can be attributed to driving my mount to it's limits, so I can throw some money at part of the problem, but the discipline required to let all those subs go has to be maintained. I started out feeling like every sub was sacred (Hat Tip: Monty Python) but you really showed me that less is more.

The Sisyphus part really made me laugh--thanks for that. What do you use to evaluate your subs? I use subframe selector too, and I have a formula which I use to evaluate my subs, and toss the rest. It doesn't use absolute numbers, but rather relative ones like If the eccentricity is within 2.5 standard deviations of the mean, etc etc.. So having said that, how do you tell if one night is better than another?

Nice video good tips. You referred the the equivalent camera to the QHY 268m as the ZWO 6200. You really meant the ZWO 2600. The 6200 is a full frame 62 megapixel camera.

Amazing images and video Dylan! A few of those tips really stood out to me, definitely can relate to the flats one 😅 Dont really have much of a choice though because I unfortunately have some problems with flats and my Zwo asi294mc pro. Anyways, really really like that Helix nebula pic of yours! Absolutely love the pastel colors, definitely my favorite color palette for sure :)

Great video, and tunes! Thanks for sharing and good luck with the teaching career. You get some tax money back for that at least, right? Lol. We had to do that last year. I feel bad for the single parents with multiple kids and an employer who doesn’t care. Now they need to get the young kid vaccines figured out we’ll be golden, or as good as it is going to get. Have a great day
