One of the biggest upgrades to fun in the game has come in the form of my-brother's-and-my house-rule that each investigator gets a bonus "story slot" for their slots to hold story assets. We combine this with another house-rule letting players start with story assets in their opening hand (either replacing one of the initial 5 or just as a bonus card, which we've leaned more towards lately), and campaigns are just so much more thematic and cooler when you actually get to regularly see and play with the NPCs you befriend and items you earn -- rather than them usually not being drawn and even when drawn often pitched for icons because you already have a better Ally. It really gives a defined character to the campaigns, as earned story assets get to strongly influence gameplay -- and it makes way more sense to have those story assets (which SHOULD just be there all the time in the world) actually show up all the time. Obviously it makes the game a bit easier, but that can be offset in other ways.
@FlarkeFiasco2 жыл бұрын
I love this, lol. I makes some investigators incredibly overpowered, but you're right, that can be offset. Like say, adding an auto fail into the bag if everyone wants to start with their signature card

I love this! I'm going to use this rule with the story assets next time I play.
@anaphysik2 жыл бұрын
@@FlarkeFiasco As a note, I did not mean "signature cards" (although that's a reasonable house-rule as well if one desires, although it does create some oddities for some investigators; I've never used that house-rule, but I have felt the urge to try it out sometime). What I'm referring to are *STORY ASSETS* -- for an example everyone should know, Lita Chantler from Night of the Zealot. (Admittedly it kinda makes sense for Lita to maybe never show up since she's secretly the villain of that campaign and definitely doesn't care a whit about whether you live or die...). Basically, those NPCs and quest items you accumulate in a campaign, who are usually supposed to be important characters that you *presumably* should care about, but who have a habit of never getting drawn and being kinda just worse than the Allies that you *chose* to put in your deck (or simply just not worth Charisma). By starting with them in hand and getting a special slot for them, they become more like a feature of the campaign, rather than a random-chance/throwaway thing.
@imme27632 жыл бұрын
@@anaphysik wait what lita is the villain? can you explain this to me?
@anaphysik2 жыл бұрын
@@imme2763 The ghouls and their allies are not a true threat to Arkham; they've been there basically forever and just sit around munching on bodies and being creepy in the woods. They're only a threat *now* because Lita is a genocidal murderer who killed a whole lot of them, and they're summoning Umordhoth to bring her to justice. Meanwhile, Lita goes around trapping people in their own houses and letting them die as collateral damage just so she can murder even more ghouls -- the only reason anything weird happens in The Gathering is because Lita sets her deathtrap up *in your house without even warning you*, and if you don't break through the barrier in The Gathering you stone-cold perma-die (although there's actually several story-breaking bugs in The Gathering's resolutions, mostly that 'no resolution' forgets to do the same is-it-Act1/2-or-is-it-Act-3 check that Agenda 3b does). Anyway, Lita not only doesn't care that you die, she is actively *furious* that you would *dare* to break down her barrier (not that you knew it was hers or why it was there) rather than be sacrificed to her crusade. (She also withholds her 'help' unless you burn down your house. Burning down your house serves no actual benefit other than the self-gratification of someone who *tried to murder you,* and actually removes evidence that the investigators could use to learn more about what's going on. Of course, Lita only cares about killing ghouls, and the PCs are either tools to that end or they're not.) If you throw Lita to Umordhoth, the ghouls and their allies ...let you go, and cause no trouble whatsoever in the town. The explicitly tell you that "Umôrdhoth is a just god who claims only the guilty and the dead." The PCs are traumatized by their experience and their choices, but nothing bad actually happens. Arkham is only in peril in the resolution in which Umordhoth is summoned by Lita escapes, and it's only in peril because she flees town rather than face justice and because Umordhoth is too not-of-this-world to do anything better than lash out trying to find her. In the end, she escapes the consequences of her crimes, but many innocents (including the PCs) perish in her stead. That Lita is the real villain isn't outright stated (which I personally find repugnant, because it's possible that the authors never grappled with the fact that they created a throroughly bigoted character in a genre that has a dark history with bigotry), but all the info *is* there such that I consider any textual analysis of NotZ that doesn't conclude that Lita is the villain to be fundamentally flawed, like didn't-pay-attention-to-the-story flawed. Heck, it's right in the title -- this is the Night of the *Zealot* and Lita is plainly subtitled The Zealot, and a "zealot" (by the common definition: a violent fanatical believer) isn't exactly a positive thing to be... By the way, Night of the Zealot and Umordhoth are remixed references to "The Charnel God" (1934) by Clark Ashton Smith, in which the masked ghoul priests are spooky but ultimately neutral-to-good, and Mordiggian (what Umordhoth is an expy of) shows up solely to devour the actual villain. Note e.g. that the quote above is a rewording of "Mordiggian is a just god, who claims only the dead, and has no concern with the living" that occurs when the ghoul priests let the main character leave in peace. There's also explicit talk by an inhabitant of the city that the ghouls/Umordhoth devouring the dead stops "corruption and the worm" and is treated much the same as cremation -- this *could* be propaganda to favor the ghoul priests, but given the post-apocalyptic Dying Earth that Zothique is, "eating bodies staves off a zombie apocalypse" is honestly pretty likely to be true. If I had written Night of the Zealot, I would've definitely included ominous words of possible unintended consequences in any resolution involving Umordhoth being defeated.

When dealing weaknesses, the method I've pushed on my friends is to deal one basic weakness to each player face-down and another face-up. You can choose to refuse the face-up weakness for a random one (the face-down one). It's usually a fun decision to make and it at least gives you a chance to veto Overzealous or something like your example of Paranoia ruining a whole strategy. But you run the risk of getting something even worse with the veto. I vetoed something not too bad the other day for my Gloria deck and ended up with the Unspeakable Oath for evasion. Good luck getting exp, Gran.

A suggestion, rather than shuffling the named treacheries into the explore deck during the setup, set them aside, out of play. Then each time you explore successfully, shuffle one of the set aside treacheries into the exploration deck (discarding them as usual when drawn). This is a variant of the explore rule from Return to the Forgotten Age. This way you at least can get some locations into play before the exploration deck becomes dangerous.

I think what my gf and I will do is basically everyone has adaptable for free, then when we get a LITTLE more comfortable with deck building and the various roles make everyone buy it if they want it. So far the only classes we've put on the table are Seeker, Guardian, and I've played 1 or 2 games with a Rogue. At the very least the "everyone can buy it" options seems like a good compromise for the first 1 or 2 runs of a campaign/scenario.

The game has lots of unusable cards with decent higher-level versions, but the upgrading rule doesn’t give any incentive to use the level zero cards. Our house rule lets players eventually upgrade cards for free if they have used the lower-level version enough times. We play with clues investigators have may be discarded to draw another token when drawing from the bag We play with random mythos events determined by the amount of players. For example, if their are four players, you roll a d4 and the mythos triggers that amount of times, you then roll a d4 the amount of times it was triggered. So if you got a 3, you roll 3 times designating each investigator a number. The mythos triggers for each of the players rolled. It can trigger multiple times on a single investigator. This makes the mythos far more unpredictable and random. Also a bit easier but of course like everything can be offset for difficulty like everything else.

Number 5 provokes an interesting question I have, it's a bit weird cause it can involve spoilers but I'll ask regardless, are there many opportunities for players to die that aren't accruing trauma and how easy are they to avoid? I got spoiled for one in Carcosa and saw an enemy that could do it in Dunwich (we've played all of that and are about to start Carcosa soon) so I'm curious how many there are and how likely we are to have that happen. I got into the game quite recently and got all the campaigns and we're playing through them but we only get to play once every few weeks and we usually do two scenarios a session. I have all the cards so I build the decks and then bring the upgrades people will wanna use for their decks rather than bringing the whole collection to where we play. If someone died or went insane, that'd basically be the end of the session for that day since I wouldn't have a replacement, bit awkward if it was the first of the two scenarios we were hoping to play that day. So I've been wondering if I should ask people to have a "back up investigator" in mind with a potential deck but then that gets weird if their backup would want cards from one of the other decks in play or whatever and I'm starting to edge into "well, I'm bringing like 200 player cards over now" territory which I'd prefer to avoid. I think I'm just hoping we don't encounter the issue by succeeding or at worst only dying all together in scenario 7 or 8 personally (we don't mind if we fail the entire campaign as a group near the end). Maybe if someone dies during a scenario we'd restart that scenario if we still had enough time to potentially finish it. I'm just wondering if there's like a spoiler free way to just give little hints as to how not to get into this position in the first place? Or is there nearly always a heads up on relevant cards that you might get killed if you do X so someone low on a stat could resign as soon as they start getting worried?
@anaphysik2 жыл бұрын
Being outright killed/driven-insane in the middle of a campaign is rare, but it does happen occasionally. (There's also "early campaign loss" permadeath, but the "permadeath, proceed to next scenario with new investigator(s)" situations are more relevant.) Since the game isn't really designed around character-loss (compare with, say, Eldritch Horror, where you're *expected* to go through a slew of dead investigators), it almost always feels really bad and generally feels like lazy design when so much of the game is very much fail-forward. Sometimes the narrative reasons are good, but a lot of them feel forced or poorly telegraphed. By the way, mid-campaign permadeath-and-continue-on is a feature even of Night of the Zealot; if you fail to get past Lita's barrier, each investigator is killed as the ghouls try to escape (and fail). You all choose new investigators to play Midnight Masks with, there's a bit of text with Lita seeking out these others, and Lita gets added to your deck and the house is still standing (which leads to a weird bit of campaign-log text, where "your house" is still standing even though *that* "you" is dead, and from the perspective of the new investigators it's just "someone's house").
@general_ferere17262 жыл бұрын
Hello James, first of all the 'killer' scenarios are to the best of my knowledge even-numbered ones (excepting the ones that cause you to lose the campaign), so you should not be caught out mid-session. Some general tips for avoiding investigators getting killed off: 1) If a scenario does not let you resign, you can usually relax, although there is at least one exception to that rule (not counting scenarios where losing the scenario loses the campaign). 2) If there is an ability on your starting location that lets you immediately resign on turn one be more alert (I know this happens in a lot of Dunwich scenarios but this becomes less frequent in later campaigns). 3) Be especially alert if an act advances when all investigators have resigned. Try your absolute best to have all the investigators resign even if it means giving up on victory points/other objectives. 4) Do your best to avoid angering Ancient Ones

Not so much of a house rule as a different way of displaying the game state, anytime a doom is put on a location or a monster or a player card, we also put one on the agenda and then only count the ones on the agenda toward advancement. when a doom leaves play from a monster or the like, we remove it from the agenda. This lets us always easily see how much doom is in play.

Another thing is we have slot tokens which we give out to each player, and when a card comes into play that uses a slot we put the token on the card. This makes it easy for a new player to keep track and not have more cards in play than they are allowed for a given slot. when a card effect allows for an additional slot we give them an additional token of that type, so for instance somebody with charisma has two ally slot tokens as physical tangible ways of keeping track of this.
