I am absolutely new, doing my first project - putting a wood top on an MDF desk and converting it to a vanity. Do any of you guys who know what you're doing remember how confusing it was hearing for the first time words and terms like "edge -banding", "designing a custom jig", "free hand routing"? Very much appreciate this lady Tamar, her patient, measured pacing and simple yet complete directions take the mystery out of much of this and instill confidence. I'm now very confident my first project will come out very nice and be the first of many. The only drawback I see to this jig is using Acrylic. Acrylic is easy to crack. Lexan (polycarbonate) would be a better option. Though slightly more expensive.
@bobd.3 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing when she said acrylic. Lexan (brand name) or similar product would be a better choice. The difference in price you won't even think about when that acrylic goes flying all over the shop.
@russmartin41893 жыл бұрын
@@bobd. I chose polycarbonate because I had just bought and cut a bunch of it for security windows. I had a 1" strip 72" long and thought I would just bend and snap it into small pieces to discard. I bent it 180 degrees and it still didn't snap. It is very tough stuff. So, when it came to making this jig, it was a no brainer what I would use. Acrylic is good for picture frames, polycarbonate for anything that is going to be "used and abused and might crack.

This is a very well thought out system! And this is coming from a guy who'd rather spend more time dreaming up and making jigs than doing the actual job its self! My only critique isn't about the jig its self but about the way you measured the set up for cutting the circles. When cutting circles you actually have to divide by two when setting up the bit because the pivot point is in the middle of the circle. In other words to cut a 4" circle you'd measure out 2" from the pivot point.
@3x3CustomTamar3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. People misspeak sometimes. Realized that after I posted.

My intention wasn't so much about busting your ass as just pointing it out for any "beginners" out there watching this. I've been there and done that myself! That aside... Why do I always come back to you and why do I always settle on your approach amongst all the other variations on every theme/jig on youtube? For several reasons. First is research. You always make yourself familiar with what is out there. Second is thoroughness. You always completely master the topic before you present it. Third is completeness. The videos always finish with a clear demonstration of how you use the jig in the real world. Fourth, plans! Almost without fail you put together well documented instructions. The perspiration that you give to everything is amazing. So easy to talk about, so damn hard to execute. Good lord Tamar. They are so easy to follow and so succinct. It almost makes me forgive your funny accent(jkaaaaaaay!!!!). Fifth is you always find a way to add your own special touch and raise the bar for everyone else. I made your crosscut jig. To this day I have not seen it eclipsed. Sixth is presentation. Flawless. You show your mistakes as well. At least the ones that you feel some needs to be aware of. And finally you just being you. We have all watched you grow. I raised 5 children. I know what it is to split time between your passion and the things you hold most dear. Good luck to you. I recently completed building your router jig. Within one week I needed to modify a cake plate that I made to fit my daughter-in-law's glass come. Somehow the grove within the circular wooden plate was approximately 1/6th" too small. Since they live on the west coast I could not try it with the glass dome. They are here now visiting us for the holidays so I had them bring the wooden plate so I could modify it. The piece has a butterfly inlay so I did not want to put a pivot point into the surface and that is where I was able to utilize your jig to open the circular slot. It worked better than I expected. If I could I would attach a photo.. Happy New Year.

It has been a while since I have watched your channel, you just started building things I am not really interested in (guitars). The workbench base showed up in my feed yesterday and I watched it. This led me to revisit your video catalog and this video caught my attention. I am very impressed with your creativity and ability to execute what is in your head into the real world. Well done. Your presentation is really excellent too, even though your designs are complex, you make the audience believe it is possible we can do it too. Thanks for the videos.

I purchased the plans and printed them out. For everyone out there,, they are excellent, and very detailed. Between them and the video, I'm sure my jig will come out right. I also bought a 24" piano hinge on Amazon for $8.99 to make the edge guide. Can't wait to make the jig and the edge guide and see what I can do with them. Tamar, I am now going to watch all your videos, except the guitar builds. I'm sure I am going to learn countless things that will help take my woodworking to the next level.

I watched this when it first came out. Then, I get an email notifying me that they are in stock ready made, I bought one. No, I did not trust myself to make my own. I am glad you color coded the holes to mount the various different compact routers. I would never have found the correct holes for mine (DeWalt). Of course I printed the template in black and white so the colors did not come through but the holes for mine were solid black and that worked.

The best jig I have seen. Great. My biggest difficulty regards the imperial measurement system. These quarters, eights etc are absolutely crazy for me. I am a brazilian living in USA and it is impossible to me think out of metric system. I will make a meyric version of your jig. Great tool. You are the best. Thanks for your woodworking classes.

Wow! I’ve been a subscriber for a year now. Why am I now just watching this video? Lol! I’ve been procrastinating on making a custom trim router base for a while. I even already have the acrylic. I was just waiting for the right inspiration and you thought of many of the uses that I would also need. Thank you for sharing yet another very innovative and very adaptable accessory to the trim router arsenal. Love your channel!!!

Great little jig 👍 I’d just like to mention, if your routing Acrylic you need to run your router on a low speed 1 or 2 on the speed dial, if you have a trim router where you can’t lower the speed then do not try it, it will weld your cut. Just thought I’d mention it 😁

For all you DIYers on a budget. I have bought a lot of tools using credit card sign up bonuses and cash rewards. Wells Fargo is giving $200 cash back on your first $1000. I used it to buy food and gas! There are many others. I just bought a Makita 3 base corded trim router kit, like Tamar's, but with a cord and more powerful motor. Cost over $200, but was completely free! Should last a lifetime. Happy Routing!

Wow, I really needed this video. This is only the second video I've seen of yours but I'm wondering how you got into wood working . Don't take offense but it's great to come across a woman who can kick !y ass in knowledge and does it so enjoyably well. I'm so impressed it's like being torn between laughing and awe. So many who do vids waste viewers time but you get right on track and go the extra mile in details. Imagine a video of a rifle build review and the guy babbles for three minutes with coffee, films meeting the delivery truck and before he ever gets to the range it's been a half hour. You cut to the meat of it and are just so informative and pleasant . Still on the verge of laughing as the vid plays. Your falling may be teaching I'm signing up.

I have an almost identical jig; first thing I made for my palm router when a finger injury was making using the 'big one' painful. The circle-cutting-without-a-centre-point bit is absolutely inspired though; it's time for 2.0! As for that piano-hinge straight edge. Why have I never thought of this?! Genius :)
