Dammm I wish this video was 4 weeks earlier just did almost identical process, even purchased the cabatech cyclone you have to my Felder dust extractor and purchased the same auto blast gates, This video would have saved me a lot of headaches and time, but it was a great learning curve . thanks for sharing Dave

I put in a 6" system about 10 years ago, used metal spiral pipe. Had a 2hp Woodsucker cyclone, and found it fine except when using sanders. Sanding dust is much harder to collect than bigger chips. Went to a 3hp cyclone, which was an improvement, but what worked best was installing an outside air dump, which was building a 8" dryer vent type air dump, with a blast gate so if I have a really cold or hot day, can use the filter. My cyclone drops the dust into a 55 gallon drum. When planing boards I can fill the drum in about 15 minutes.

I built my system fifteen or more years ago with 6" mains and 4" branches and have been very happy. One thing I learned is don't have the branches come off the bottom, come in from the side if possible. When they come off the bottom debris will fall into unused branches and there will be quite a clatter when you start that line. I have micro switch on each gate that brings the dusty on. Good idea to open two or three occasionally to clean out he system. I am using a single bag 1 1/2 hp system.

Thanks for this video! I just purchased a few sections of 6" from a local plumbing supply to pipe in my 2hp harbor freight(American Chinese equivalent to your collector.) I have an upgraded impeller to increase cfm, but have been on the fence about the 6" pipe as I've gotten a ration of crap from most of the dust collection "experts" for wanting to do 6" on a 2hp system as they say it's way too big. Glad I just found your video, and will be going ahead and piping in my system as planned! Thanks again!

I saw these auto blast gates when they first came on the market. Jumped and designed a system that works for me, I have 6" to most machines, I have also aborted the dust outlets on table saw and thicknesser from 4' up to 6'' the difference speaks for itself, no comparison I bought my 6"pipein 6m lengths from big box store, all other components came from a plumbing wholesaler (first lot came from interstate, even including freight the price saving was amazing. Do some shopping around the price variations are crazy. Without being rude but people who rave about 2" & 4" need a 4x2 wrapped around their noggins. :)

Right away... the tip about the smaller drum, and "less bulk to remove", that's a great one I didn't consider. 6 inch though... wow! That's a power hog to get that one moving... it might snatch the pencil from your pocket if you are at just the right angle lol.

Awesome! I just did the same thing this past week from 4" to 6" to each 6" blast gate then dropped down to 4". no 90° elbows used at all, all 45° elbows and 2 sweeping t's used. I could kick myself for wasting time and money with the 4" a couple of years ago!

I set up my 5hp collector with 6" PVC lines but never have less than 2 4" ports open at one time to keep the airflow in the main ducts up. I'm hoping to swap to a clearvue cyclone soon.

Very thorough video. @2:16, you said that you preferred a single 88 degree sweep to 2 x 45 degree bends, but you didn’t explain why. I thought the general consensus was that 2 x 45’s created a gentler bend? Also, have you considered adding a grounded, uninsulated cable to dissipate static electricity buildup? Or are you finding the static build up isn’t a problem?

It is actually a cleaner change of direction. It is a sweep, not a hard bend.

Not sure Brad. It was an easy thing to do, just some plywood and a piece of 6 inch PVC pipe that was flared with heat over a mould.

I am a little concerned on how to pipe my dust collection system since I modified my original powermatic I do want to use 6” much as possible it is wall mounted about 36” off the floor so the intake is facing the ceiling

Hi Nick. My 2 horse is a carbatec dust extractor.And my inline separator is also Carbatec. Of course 3 horse would have more pull but the way my setup is, I don't need it.

Good one Dave. Thanks for the info. With regard to the dust extractor is it vented outside to get rid of the 1 micron dust? I imagine that venting would reduce back pressure caused by the filter and increase the air flow. I have checked my 2hp dust extractor and the flex hose is 5" (125mm NB) into a 5" impeller housing inlet (if that makes sense) which forms part of the impeller cover or volute, so is there any advantage in going from a 6" flange onto the impeller housing or would it be OK to use the existing flange into a very short run of 5" hose then to a 6" to 5" duct reducer then to 6" flex connecting to the remaining 6" system? What do you think? Or perhaps use a 6" DWV floor flange screwed directly to the impeller cover?

Hi Stephen, Any reduction in diameter close to the dust extractor will act as a pressure reduction valve does with plumbing. Re filters, like me you are on a few acres with a reasonably pleasant temperature year round and venting outside is a preferable option Re air flow and no small particles inside the workshop. I wanted to maximise the benefit so I went with 6 inch all the way until the collection port at the machine. The stpe down to 4 inch at that point acts in much the same way as a crevice tool on a house hold vacuum cleaner.

G'day Dave How did I not discover your channel until about 2 months ago. The information you provide is incredibly helpful. I just picked up my Carbatec 2100w system last week and picked up some grabbed some 150mm fittings from the plumbing shop yesterday. I had the intention of mounting the motor/ impeller component to the wall like yours, and not use any of the rest of the system however the mounting feet seem rather weak. Could you do a more detailed video about how you've mounted your unit above the cyclone. I saw you did a similar mount on the system you have connected to the CNC. I also intend to have mine outside the workshop to save noise and floor space. You also mentioned that you prefer the sweep over 2 x 45 bends. Could you elaborate on that? Thanks for your videos.

The sweep is basically a 90 degree bend that is male to female. The radius is way bigger than a female to female 90 degree bend. The fact that the radius is one continuation rather than 2 45's with a "interruption" in the middle is better for airflow.

Hi Chad. My 2 horse is rated at 1200 CFM. That is with filters and so on but at the inlet to the impeller. My setup has been vented directly outside which improved the performance. The system is still vented outside. The results from the anemometer were pretty accurate given the first reading on a 4 inch system had no filters to give back pressure and the new system was taken at exactly the same point on the 4 inch flex hose which is 3 metres long and the rest of the system is 6 inch right the way through. I am still going to adjust things as I think I can squeeze some more out of it!

Am I missing something or were the inline separator that bad? The link doesn't work for me, nor do searches of the carbatec website, I only find the laguna and festool cyclones now. As much as I'd love to fork over nearly $4K for a laguna one, I just can't afford that for my little one man hobby shop. Great video though, I'll just have to keep researching.

Hi Woodwork Hubby. It is rated at 1200 cfm with the filter on. As I run through a cyclone and then exhaust directly outside I do not have any back pressure on the system. The readings were comparative only and indeed 50% increase.
