No Chromebooks for back to school? Unless you're majoring in something that requires working with special kind of software that can't run on ChromeOS, they are pretty good for schoolwork. They're portable, (mostly) lightweight, good for researching, writing papers, even some music and movies. If you're not doing a lot of stuff at once, they can probably handle a browser-based game. Or if you do need to work with special software, you can build a decent desktop PC for home and still use a Chromebook or a basic 2in1 tablet to take notes in class. It's gonna be a lot easier than carrying around a huge-ass gaming laptop around campus/town. My brother had the Lenovo Y700 and while it's pretty good, it's not a "back to school" laptop, unless maybe you're studying gaming.

Chromebooks are okay, and much better than Windows equivalents of the same price range. The problem is just the limited amount of things you can do with ChromeOS. Like, sure, you can download Android apps and games on several newer Chromebooks, but it still feels pretty mediocre. At least the thing doesn't take a month to install updates.

I bought the 2015 MacBook Pro last year (after the 2016 was out, but the 2016 MacBook Pro had all sorts of issues and only had USB C ports (which I've never even see a USB C plug IRL) so I got the 2015 and I have noooooo regrets. I love this thing so much. The reason to buy Macs for school is that they last. My family uses a 2006 black MacBook (non-pro) as the main computer for checking emails and other stuff on the web, and my mom does her taxes on it... I put an SSD in it last year and the thing just flies... It's pretty quick for its age. I expect my MacBook Pro 2015 to last me through University easily... :D

Austin! if you think that lenovo has the best specs for cheap, you should really try the lenovo 110 15-ISK. its specs are really solid and you can find them for around $300 Specs: Intel core i3-6100u intel HD 520 graphics (surprisingly powerful) 1 TB hard drive 6 GB DDR4 ram @2133 MHz. Please, get this one and give it a go. it is one of the best budget laptops out there.

My MacBook Pro Mid-2015 has never let me down. It has 16GB of RAM, some decent dedicated graphics with 2GB of GDDR5 memory, and 512GB of space. Except for the charger. That thing won't stop tearing itself apart. After about 6 months the insulation has literally split in half and I have to use electrical tape so it won't shock me to death.

coincidentally my school laptop is basically not lasting even a day without running out of power. It's the asus UX303L and has served me well for the 3 - 4 years that I've owned it. I know that's not very long but even after spending an additional $100 to replace the battery it is still struggling to last, with me being forced to charge it between recess and lunch. (and yes all possible settings are on low or disabled to save battery) I'm heavily considering buying that LG gram...

@Austin Evans, the Asus Zenbook UX430 is actually better than the LG Gram. It has the exact same specs, thin chassis, thin bezels, lightweight, sleek, the whole nine yards. Even though the battery is smaller and only lasts 9 hours, you only pay 750$ instead of 1000$.

Value-wise, it looks like the Lenovo Y series is the one to go with. I you have a PC at home for gaming, I love the Gram. I'd get that one.

If you want a budget laptop you might as well go for some refurbished old laptops. The CPU may be old school and lack some bells and whistles, but at least it will come with a bigger hard drive which is more practical than a 32GB storage.
