I would also say that if there is a local woodturning club near you you do not have to join but can go and see demos or even pay demos from named turners usually every year. Turners are the friendliest folks who give advice, tools and wood just for fun. Seeing someone turn live is a bit better than videos because you get to see how they are doing it and can ask questions. Every one turns differently. As long as the hobby is fun and you are doing the turning safely go for it. If something does not feel comfortable don't do it!
