I think 8-bit music theory's piece made me laugh the most because of what he said in the beginning, which also supports Jay Foreman's point on how we are expecting them to make us laugh so they might not be as effective at that.
@chiju

Honestly, he did such a good job of misdirecting. Part of me really wanted to believe he was being subversive, but as I looked at his face I just thought, "Man, poor guy." Then it turned out he was actually being subversive. I thing what really makes his piece funny though is imagining the embarrassment of the band trying to be professional while the soloist clearly is not.

Yeah, Jimmy Carr's analogy on analysing jokes - Its like a classroom vivisection of a frog. Nobody is really interested and the frog dies anyway. Pure music doesnt inherently contain a hard message and comedy needs stark definition for it to work. Therefore, even without the frog killing explanation to introduce the piece, none of these compositions really accomplish the task. At best they could be used as a soundtrack to a comedy scene but fail as the self contained comedy performance.

Jay is so right about the context! What makes us laugh is usually a setup, and then something that isn't what we expect. So the context is a big part of the joke. Like a different outcome, an unexpected change - or the absence of an expected occurrence. Because of this, I found the more conventional pieces funnier, since I believe I know where they are going. The stacked noices not so much

I find contrast to be the funniest thing. Beethoven's 5th symphony I think has the point with a solo woodwind where it sounds like it's gonna be a very longing, melancholic ending, and all of a sudden, the main theme just cuts it off and starts again. That's always made me laugh.

My colleague showed me a video of his daughter playing in a school concert that was like 8-bit's piece on steroids. About 8 kids all playing out of tune brass. It was so funny. We watched it every day at work to cheer us up.

So many things to love about this video. Happy to see you doing a collab, David, Time to check these other musicians out. To be honest, I was worried about the premise. I thought it might land smack dab on its face. But, boy was I wrong. Each entry had a charm that left me laughing "Concerto for a Casual Wind Instrument" came close to getting me falling out of my chair. Thanks to you and your fellow musicians for getting my eyes welling up with tears of utter joy,

Now I'm gonna be the باعوص that I always am and say: meme music isn't funny. Americans just have no sense of humor and are ready to laugh at anything. There's literally nothing funny about Megalovania, it's just a video game character theme. There's nothing funny about Never Gonna Give You Up, it's just a 80s pop love song that made a dude famous, There's nothing funny about Bring Back To Life, it's a song about depression. There's nothing funny about Crawling, it's a song about drug addiction written by a man who literally killed himself because of said drug addiction. Americans just hate serious stuff and try to run away from reality by laughing it off, that's why y'all never get anything done.
