Guacamole!! I've loved them for years, but assumed they were patented. So happy they're not!

I can't keep guacamole in stock, the contrast paired with astilbe is so nice.

In the Pacific Northwest…love all your varieties; I have Kong , Earth Angel, Sting, June,, Sum and Substance, and a few that were already here when I moved in 7 years ago. The back of my property has various fruit, nut and Arborvitaes..so been transforming my shaded areas sticking with just 3 or 4 varieties it is very woodland pretty and pleasing to the eye. Also a few ferns for texture. My husband wasn’t into plants until my 3 year into redoing these spaces, now he loves it and is helping me😊

Craig, I have lots of different hosta varieties in my garden, but my favorite one is probably Sum and Substance. I planted it in a nearly full-sun location, and it is beautiful! I need to divide it, but I'll wait until spring because I don't want to ruin its shape in my flowerbed. Have a great weekend! ~Margie🤗💐🐝🦋

I tried autum frost last year, I thought it died but this year-oh boy! It is still small but the leaves are be-aa-uuu-ti-full. I might buy another one to test it's sun tolerance. I would love to try the "undulata" too but hard to find.

My six "must haves" would be: 'Fragrant Bouquet', 'Stained Glass', 'Sagae'', 'Blue Angel', 'Striptease', H. ventricosa. The ones you recommend are good, but so common they're everywhere. I grow the 6 I listed and they're all great growers and widely available.

You should mention they're not picky about where they're planted, some of mine grow under a western Redwood. My soil is more gravel than dirt and they grow beautifully. Watch out for Slugs and snails tho.

I have really enjoyed hosta "sum and substance". It's large and the leaves are chartreuse. Mine is planted next to hosta "Empress Wu" that is supposed to be the largest hosta but sum and substance dwarfs it in my garden every year.

Ever thought about doing elephant ears? I have over a hundred already in pots and was thinking about trying to start a backyard nursery. Had maybe 15 plants at the start of the year so they definitely multiply quickly and seems to have a quick turn around with how quickly they grow

My dad planted 2 varieties of Hosta in his house but can not tell for sure what variety it is. One is 75% positive that it's a "Patriot", the other one is still unknown, but could be a Halcyon except that it is only about 10" tall and 18" across. 2 different nurseries gave me 2 different not so sure answer and the orange big box store told me it's a "leaf" lol. Walmart do sell a bi-colored hosta they just label "green hosta" under the EXPERT brand and is supplied by Sawyer Nursery- it too is a mystery.

I would love to have a Blue Mouse Ear but where I live in Northern VA., they cost $18!!! For Christmas I asked my family to give me a "raincheck" to buy ferns and hostas. I love them so much. Today I got two hostas in my local nursery and 4 ferns. (christmas and b-day gift)

Speaking of Hosta did you ever do an update on the Sunny Halcyon.I know you were just building stock with them this year and not trying to sell them but it would be interesting to see their progress.
@savvydirtfarmer2 жыл бұрын
They've not done great... I think our summer heat was really hard on them. They're alive though. I'll update them next Spring... once they've been potted a full year and had time to grow a little and establish themselves. Then I'll really be able to tell if it was worth it. Right now, it's looking iffy.

Hi Savvy. Loved your hosta discussion. Please tell me about the covering above them. Is that enough of a barrier to give dappled sunlight to most hosta varieties? Thanks in advance.
@savvydirtfarmer2 жыл бұрын
It's just a simple shade cloth, 40-60% shade. Hostas grow great under it.

There are apps out there that identify plants. Can the apps tell you a specific type of hosta?
@savvydirtfarmer2 жыл бұрын
For nursery purposes, I'd never use an app to id a plant of any kind. They may be helpful in **some** cases, but in the nursery world, you've got to correctly id 100% of the time. An app can't do that.
