BetterTouchTool is by far my favourite utility on mac, as it combines a tone of features, usually found across multiple apps: Window Management (including all the features of FlexiGlass), Clipboard management, Keyboard shortcuts+sequences, Trackpad Gestures, Mouse Gestures, Siri Remote, Advanced Touchbar customizations (even scripted ones, like displaying current Spotify song). You name it, it can do it. And to top it off, there's a community of people sharing their setup and customizations.

Default folder x for better save options Yoink for quickly storing items Path Finder for a more powerful finder that is more customisable(and brings back colour in the side bar so everything isn’t just grey) BetterTouchTool for remapping shortcuts and making new ones for keyboard, smart mouse gestures, ones for certain apps, and so much more) Hyperdock (which you gives you a preview when you hover over doc apps like windows does) Copied or Paste for looking at, organising, editing(copied only) and quickly using your copied history. PopClip for a customisable popup bar that comes up when you highlight text just like on IOS(you can shorten url links, bold italic underline options, send to different apps and a whole lot more. Probably the one I use the most) These are all far more useful then the ones in the video, and I hope Dieter revisits this topic with extra ones he’s tried out after reading all the suggestions in the comments

as an alternative to Vanilla, have you tried Bartender? It has a lot of configuration options to do things like hide an app in the bartender bar unless it updates, then show it for x seconds in the normal menu bar. Other than that, that's an excellent list!

I have two favorite utilities, they are pretty simple but useful. Both are free, the first one is memory clean, it shows you have much free memory you have up in your menu bar. When you click on it the app goes into more details on what is using your memory. The second one is activity monitor, it shows you how many core in your cpu is being used and how hard they are being used.

BetterTouchTool is the best utility ever imo. The main thing making me hesitate moving to Windows is the fact I wouldn't be able to use it anymore, I have a bunch of macros assigned to specific gestures and taps on my trackpad that makes using any computer without it soooo much slower.

For a two-stop shop utility for window tiling, I like Spectacle. It lets me assign keystrokes and let's me title windows similar to Windows itself. I use Command-Option-F for full screen (with dock and menu visible) and Command-Option-Left/Right arrow. This makes window tiling so much better and similar to Windows (since I have to use Windows frequently too).

The ultimate meta utility Homebrew is really the best thing about Mac customization. Macdown is pretty sweet of you write markdown. IA writer is really one of the nicest writers, although with some quick customizations vim can be equally as good. Virtual box with vagrant have always been super useful, but nowadays most people just use docker. And if you're still support command line averse. Path finder is a nice replacement, but it is still really expensive

===APPS=== Beamer - For playing any video file to AppleTV / ChromeCast (beamer-app.com) Hazel - For automatically moving/copying files according to various criteria (www.noodlesoft.com) Rocket - By far the best way to input emoji on the Mac (although it's not so good at keeping up to date with all the very latest emoji, those can be added manually if need be) (matthewpalmer.net/rocket/) BetterTouchTool - For customizing keyboard shortcuts to various things. This is how I do window management: Just a bunch of hotkeys for window positions of 1/2, 1/3, 2/3 screen in various positions (folivora.ai/downloads/) Focus - Indispensable app that helps me Focus by blocking both websites AND native applications according to a certain schedule. Can easily make specific exceptions, e.g. for logging in via Facebook but block rest of Facebook (heyfocus.com) Stay - Save window position of apps and automatically restore them when plugging in external monitors (itunes.apple.com/dk/app/stay/id435410196) 1Keyboard - Use your Mac's keyboard on other bluetooth devices such as iPhone and iPad. Can be invoked with glove shortcut. Don't use often, but comes in handy when I do (itunes.apple.com/dk/app/1keyboard/id766939888?mt=12) gfxCardStatus - Only for Macs for discrete GPUs. When I'm on the go and want to maximize battery charge, I can easily see if it's using integrated or discrete graphics, and which apps is using the discrete if it's in use so I know what to close if I'm not using them and want to extend battery charge (gfx.io) Typora and Caret - just two really lovely markdown note-taking apps. Can show inline math, figures, code syntax, sections, various formatting, but it's all plain text / Markdown under the hood. @TheVerge
@TheVerge 6 жыл бұрын
Mainly it's way way cheaper. I used to use Bartender because it could also hide the notification and spotlight buttons, but High Sierra made doing that a lot more complicated so I just switched to Vanilla because it's simpler. Also, you know, easier to recommend because it's cheap! -- Dieter

Default Folder X by St Clair Software is my favorite. It adds so much to Open and Save dialogs. I don't even know if Apple has added features to supplant what it does. (I'm currently using MacOS Sierra.) If it has, I haven't noticed because Default Folder is so engrained in my workflow. I realize how important it is to me when I use a Mac without it.

Rocket is a great utility that when you type : in iMessage or other messaging apps, you can search for emojis instead of scrolling through the menu or touchbar to find the right one. Really handy and works pretty well in my experience, especially if you want a less common emoji like a flag or animal in your message

Nerdy or not, the ToothFairy app just solved a long time issue for me. I'm in conference calls for most of my workday, using my AirPods with my iPhone, iPad or Mac (depending on where I am at the time). Switching AirPods from iPhone/iPad to Mac is supposed to be seamless (click volume button, select source) but many times it simply does not work. ToothFairy seems to have fixed this entirely. Thanks Dieter!

BetterTouchTool and Magnet are two utilities that come to mind. BTT let’s you create shortcuts (for example I use it for cmd+e to open a new finder window) and also includes a window management tool, although the other app Magnet is the one I use for that purpose, it’s 0,99$ and it just works

Some Apps I would through in which really help. If you work in excel a lot or other apps where you need the F1 to 12 keys and you don't want to hold down the fn button use Fluor Yoink is great for drag and drop between desktops, it gives you a place where you can temporarily drag an item to which moves with you from screen to screen. In this way Unclutter helps as well, you get an always acessable folder clipboard history and notepad. and I'm not sure if it counts. But cloudmounter gives you the option to mount a cloud storage as a network dirve in you finder. I now use my TB one drive I got with office 365 much more.

The most recent update to Linux killed the window manager. You can't just ALT+Tab to apps that have multiple windows open now. They're all grouped together, and you have to wait for the dropdown. It can be sorted (sort of), but it's really not great :/

Bartender is a great paid alternative to Vanilla (which caused issues for me). It supposes 'recent activity'. So if something changes it'll show that icon for 30 seconds. For example if I've just taken a screenshot with Droplr, the Droplr icon will appear telling me the URLs been created. Also why does DisplayMaid never get any love!? It saves all the locations of my windows for my many various monitor configurations. MacBook solo, MacBook plus 2 external monitors, MacBook plus iPad w/ Sidebar etc.

You have a utility which you say “saves just one click” and “makes a big difference”, whilst you have another which hides most of your utilities behind a click? I used to be a utilities fiend too but have removed all but one (1Password) as I was losing track of the amount of stuff running permanently on my system. There’s a lot to be said for having a vanilla setup.

I have a whole bunch of free open source software that I use a lot! :) I will give some tips for those who wants it. F.lux > night shift like for the pc, more advanced then the standard of windows. SlavaSoft HashCalc > hash calculator 7-Zip > unzip and zip almost all mainstream zipfiles. scribus > Indesign alternative that is free Blender > open source 3D moddeling software notepad ++ > open source tool that helps with software coding. WINED3D > get older windows programs to run better on current os.( Like bejeweld 3) Terasology > open source minecraft clone Audacity > open source audio editting software. Inkscape > alternative to Illustrator Thunderbird > opensource email program filezilla > open source file management tool for FTP and so on. libreoffice > open source alternative to Microsoft Office shotcut > open source video edition software GIMP > open source photoshop alternative. OBS Studio > open source screen recording and broadcast software. KeePass > free password manager Seer > quicklook tool similar to mac-os but then for windows ! Greenshot > free screenshot program what can be called with a shortcut on the computer. ( Like macos) Handbreak > free video converter software. Prey > open source anti theft software. Spacesniffer > shows exactly what folders and what files take up most space on your computer! Extreme handly for when you run out of space on a external drive or so. I hope they are useful for somebody.

Here’s one you missed. It’s free too. I use a mouse on my MacBook and I do not want Natural Scroll on my mouse. A free little app called Scroll Reverser (google it) can reverse the scroll on external mouses, without effecting your trackpad. 🤙🏾

Magnet is a great alternative to Plexiglass. I use it myself and it’s great. Best of all it’s typically only 99 cents on the App Store.

I guess it depends on the Mac you have but my MacBook air 2015 model function bar works pretty well. I didn't think it would work with Spotify until I watched this video. I just thought it was strictly for itunes so I never bothered. Thanks Verge

I actually knew about a lot of these, but there were plenty that I did not! I agree that while the headphone thing is a little "unnecessary", it does make a big difference. Love the video! Thanks for the info!

One thing I don't like about macOS is that a lot of these utilities that do a small thing, but are super useful more often than not seem to cost money. On Windows, it seems like finding these kinds of utilities, they are almost always free. I use both OS, and I prefer macOS for work and Windows for general usage. Edit: just want to point out something too, why the hell isn't the last utility built into the OS? I seriously don't get that.
