Through the testimony of those who were closest to Nureyev, "Dancing Through Darkness" tells the compelling and hitherto untold story of the last years of one of the most important artistic figures of the twentieth century. Above all. it shows one man's struggle to transcend the confines of mortality, a man who literally tried to cheat death by doing what he loved most: dancing.
Especially for all Nureyev admirers. Enjoy!

So sad that treatment for this vicious virus came too late for Nureyev. Like him I have loved dance since childhood and still dance and create choreographies. He leaves behind his marvellous reputation as a beautiful graceful passionate energetic dancer who is an inspiration. His star still shines.

Yes, Rudolf Nureyev is a legend. Do not grief everyone, because legends NEVER die, they live in our hearts forever. Thank you God for giving us such a gifted dancer like him and for loaning him to us so that we can all capture his remarkable spirit and passion in dance.

He was so much more than a danseur--he was both the dance and the Lord of the Dance, who is also the Lord of Death. Rudik embraced these roles with his whole being, with dignity, glory, and grace. Thank you for this documentary so very much. I, too, am dying of not one but two invisible diseases. I believe I have just learned how to balance the desire to live with the desire to let go, and to do that with integrity, with courage, and hope for those I must leave all too soon.

He probably cld have lived longer but was too 'noble' and god-like to seek the proper medical help he needed. He apparently had not think abt death and dying. The tragedy of his life was that he lived a double life because he was in love with his own body and others were in love with it too and the eroticeness of this lifestyle made him succumb to the 'flesh' of homosexuality, which when one gets into it is hard to get out of. Even though there was this stigma of Aids at that time, apparently his medical friends were too enormoured by him to force him to seek help. That's the tragedy. Straight out, gay men just loved his body and he encouraged them and thus brutalized it. Such an incredible dancer to end up like that. Heed: Our mistakes can do us all in.

Amazing dancer! I am glad to have the chance to see stuff that my grandpa was able to witness in the theatre. Lucky guy. No one dances like that anymore. Nureyev started at 17 but surpassed everyone else. Wow! I’ve taken ballet before and It’s not easy even for a younger person to do those jumps !

@gtimny

I'm late joining this discussion but "murdered... by AZT" What a stupid thing to say. I lived through that horror, and lost many people close to me then. I remember how desperate we were for something, ANYTHING, that would combat the illness, and AZT did. Was the dosage too high? - yes, it was, but there is absolutely no question that it extended the lives of those who took it. We went from people dying in 4 or 6 months, to people living 18 months or 2 years. There was nothing else at the time. I have kept for 30 years in a little box in my dresser my partner's pill box alarm which used to go off every six hours day and night. It still has 3 of those white capsules with the blue band in it.
