6 people arrested after $20M in gold stolen from Toronto's Pearson airport in daring heist | FULL

Peel Regional Police say six people have been arrested, with arrest warrants on another three, in connection with the largest gold heist in Canadian history at Toronto Pearson airport last year.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Det. Sgt. Mike Mavity said 6,600 gold bars weighing over 400 kilograms and valued at over $20 million dollars were stolen from Toronto Pearson International Airport. There was also cash stolen valued at $2.5 million.
Mavity said the gold and currency was ordered from a refinery in Zurich, Switzerland and then transported in a container through an Air Canada flight that landed in Toronto.
That flight landed exactly one year ago on April 17, 2023 at 3:56 p.m. The cargo was then offloaded from the plane to an Air Canada cargo facility a couple of hours later at 6:32 p.m., Mavity said. The suspect arrived at the facility with a “fraudulent airway bill” and gave it to an attendant, Mavity alleged.
Around 9:30 p.m. that same night, Brink’s Canada employees went to the Air Canada cargo site to pick up the shipment of gold and currency that had already been taken, Mavity said. Police were contacted the following day and an investigation launched, he said.

Air Canada cargo is obviously extremely sloppy in their security! A container of gold bars and currency would warrant some pretty high security risks and thus, extreme vigilance while in the facility! Why were there no guards, no cameras, no electronic tracking devices to detect movement- and ONE piece of paper, a one step process, to remove it from the facility! Highly suspicious! There has been more than enough theft from cargo by employees to make this foreseeable so why was everyone dozing off?

Kudos to law enforcement in their break-through thus far, however, Canada needs to wake up, criminals are taking advantage of the soft approach to crime. Kid gets bail and walks into the parking lot to commit the same crime he was given bail for. If that isn't a clear demonstration of embarrassing the system and having no fear of repercussions, I don't know what is. Better that driver stay with the US authorities, he will do far more time there than in Canada. Lastly, I was expecting a level of sophistication in this crime, instead it was a bunch of regular criminals taking advantage of weak processes within Air Canada Cargo. How is it even possible that air Canada has such loose internal controls ? So many basic checks are at fail here - who can print a waybill, there should be restricted access, segregation of duties, who checks to see if a previous or duplicate waybill has been processed ? There should be checks for who is picking up the shipment with dual signatures required to release a shipment with video surveillance. Sounds like this was so easy because of loose or non existent controls
