Thank you so much for the mention of Deliverance. As someone who group up a stones throw from Rabun I can tell you it is an absolutely gross misrepresentation of the Appalachian culture here to say we're all uneducated backwoods stereotypical hillbillies. Yes we love our bluegrass as it/was our history and culture but no more so than any other culture's particular brand of music. Yes there are lots who may have a few teeth out but most imagery used to represent us comes from times of the great depression and it was hard pressed to find a dentist up in these hollers. Even today with modern roads and such we still have a huge struggle keeping good doctors and health care (my town's hospital doesn't even have a labor and delivery unit. You have to go the next county over which is a 20 minute drive over a mountain 🙄 We have to go to Asheville or Atlanta for any kind of specialized care). And sure we may not like "outsiders" too much but that's because of stuff exactly like what happened with the way we were represented in that movie. Too often we're shown as inbred hicks when we're not. Moonshiners isn't a whole lot better because it's still a reality show but they are at least a bit more accurate with our history and culture. At the end of the day we're just hardworking farmers and like everyone else. Many of us have roots that go all the way back to Native American/Cherokee so we've lived from the land as far back as history can trace.Treat us with respect and we will gladly welcome you to sit a spell on the porch, offer you some cold sweet tea and tell you all kinds of stories. It honestly baffles me how in just a few generations the knowledge our great grandparents had has been changed into something so misconstrued, and all because of corporate greed and political corruption. (Don't even get me started on the whole Monsanto-weedkiller- dandelion deal). So thanks again for your part in working toward returning knowledge back to the people. (And sorry for the novel of a comment).

the fact that modern fantasy weapon depiction of scythes is so far removed from the whole concept of original cultural depiction of them as a "weapon" is funny and pretty interesting in its own right. Grim reaper's "weapon". Literal reaper but as a death figure. He's reaping the souls. Using his scythe in the literal sense but for a metaphorical application. Then people saw that but didn't understand the implications and went "ooh cool big knife go brrrrrrrr" and just ran with it. Shows how easily things can be misinterpreted and misconstrued and then the misconception becomes some level of iconic as it gains momentum. Bugs bunny did this. Said "nimrod" (literary hunter figure) ironically and then it became a synonym for idiot because people didn't get the context.

I love your no 'Bull Shenanigan' presentations. It's very refreshing in an age of sensationalized click-bait, to have someone who is really interested in empowering people to be self sufficient. Regarding mass media... what don't they distort?

OMG thanks for mentioning the foxfire series! I’d been given a pdf of the first book on a thumb drive by this old military vet some years back, but someone stole the thumb drive, and I couldn’t for the life of me remember the book title! Now I can find it again!

Wow, didn't know about the video game references lol. Although I do know about people who are only used to living in the city not understanding a lot about farming or homesteading. I'm not homesteading or farming now, but I get back to it as often as I can. You're absolutely right, it can be hard work, but again, you're right, it's usually pretty peaceful. Once in a while something big comes up, but it's not usually a life-or-death crisis. You have to deal with it in a timely manner, but it can usually be worked out. Great video, keep up the good work. :)

Even lifendeath crisises are easier to resolve . Death in the cities are easier to acheive.

There’s a trope that old coots who live in the woods go crazy and start talking to nobody but if you live with nature long enough you’re bound to have some conversations with the life around you even if it can’t verbally respond

Much like our website it’s a team effort! Wren records audio and some video, and we have a part time editor who helps with KZbin.

The ignorance around the term 'off-grid'. Huge numbers of assholes don't understand it means off the POWER-grid, and will be rude about telling you that you're not off-grid if you're connected to, say, the internet. And I mean honestly RUDE about it.

Not quite mainstream media, but how about the bougie, genteel homesteaders on KZbin? No offense of course. I enjoy watching them too. Just keep in mind that it's a fantasy world.
