He’s absolutely right in recommending driver training on track. The biggest limitation in a Porsche is usually the driver. Small increases in HP and torque will yield less and driving on track is incredibly fun and very beneficial. I also believe it makes you a safer driver on the road.

I am impressed by your humbleness and your excellent take on the mods for this car. I have been instructing for several years around many tracks in the USA and a student with your attitude is always a great day in my book. For many years I had the opportunity to own and love many different race cars, mostly in the momentum kind of car arena. Now that I have grown older, I have decided to simplify. I sold my trailer (s) and all the race cars and I went for a super nice and clean used 2009 Cayman S with PDK. The car had zero mods other than the racing brembo front brakes from the previous owner which are nothing short from impressive (I had to reprogram my computer to think it has PCCB brakes or the ABS will not leave you alone at all even in the street with street pads). I changed the steering wheel with a GT3 one so I get proper paddles instead of the joke of paddles it had from factory. I also dialed as much negative camber (not really much) with a hair of toe in the factory suspension. I still use the factory wheels and Cup 2 tires which are the OEM from factory. Note this is my first automated transmission ever in the track. I always drive in the instructor group with advanced drivers and I found that I can hang out and even lap faster than some heavily modded Caymans. I want to emphasize your #1 mod being the most important of all. Learn how to drive. I agree the power mods are not worth it but I think once I wear my factory suspension I will go for a full MCS coilover suspension with GT3 arms so I can properly dial negative camber. This suspension is still comfortable in the street but a real performer in the track. My wife autocrosses this car besides me trackin it and we still take nice trips in it just to enjoy the purity of such a nimble car. At last, I have to say the PDK transmission is an absolute powerhouse and although I miss heel and toe from all the manual I have had, the PDK is like my brains are inside that transmission making do exactly what I need every millisecond. You just cannot beat it while in the track. Driving through a canyon is debatable but in the track, PDK all the way. Please keep up the good work with your channel mate!

Won't debate your believe that you love your automatic transmission. But jeez, people, don't do it. The Cayman/Boxster has at its core a magnificent manual gear box that is very much part of the soul of this nimble telepathic masterpiece of machinery. The 987 series was never about paddle shifting click shifts automatic. Remove that and you have something different, something less. Think about putting an automatic into a Miata, same thing.

IMO weight reduction mods are much much more worth doing than any mods that screw with the drivetrain. These cars are great as they are anyways and an extra 30-35 hp won't add any excitement to the drive; just something for you to know in the back of your mind that you put extra power on it. Weight reduction, solid brakes, lighter wheels, good tires, nice exhaust and suspension is pretty much all you need to get that GT4-esque feel for half the price.

Driver mod is absolutely the most valuable mod!! Good call. I think for 30 HP it is pretty expensive. For that price I can get 100HP on my 03 Cobra. Now that wouldn’t include the proper supporting mods to make it properly upgraded that will run efficiently. But something you get that aren’t necessarily straight HP. The intake and exhaust sounds will change with the new throttle body, plenum, exhaust etc. Those are all legitimate mods!

1. Spot on. Getting training and getting seat time yields the most "usable horsepower" any time you get in the car! Learning the car stock and pushing YOURSELF past your 'self imposed limits(confort zone)' and approaching the Car's limits BEFORE modding the car is the best way to go. Do not mod for mod-sake. Mod only when you've pushed yourself and the car to their limits. Then mod to increase the limits you find thru experience.
@jasonkent3658
@jasonkent3658 4 жыл бұрын
The only issue is that may increase horsepower but by enlarging the throttle body size it will hamper the low end performance. The engine needs for mid range power a faster airflow. A larger throttlebody is good for high rpm horsepower. Yes but you lose a little down low which is where is needed for around the street

DSC sport pasm replacement $1290. Smooths our normal driving, more complaint on bumps and keeps car more level. In sport mode, wow is all I can say. ECU custom flash with Cobbtune device optimized for headers. $2k. Next steps gt3 throttle body and IPD plenum, big job to install, so don’t know if worth $ yet.

It’s interesting to see such an emphasis on louder exhausts across the various KZbin channels. I’ve got a 987 Boxster S with the 3.4 litre engine and no mods at all. Recently did around 1800 k in two days at highway speed with the roof up. I don’t want anything louder. The car was brilliant by the way.

A light weight wheel, RE-71 R tires(anything similar), racing brake fluid, and pagid yellow pads makes a big difference on the track. Braking late on the corners is fun and the light wheels feels different when hitting the curves, it glides/cuts faster.

Great honest video Alister. As you know I have H&R springs and the full Carnewal GT Exhaust, the stance is superb and it sounds epic. I 100% agree with driver training, these cars are incredible in the right hands. The Guys at Centre of Gravity took me out in my car and did things with it that the boggled the mind; it was incredible what these cars can do. Anybody can go fast in a straight line, it takes no skill. However it takes skill to get the best out of these cars cross county. I've had some one to one driver training down at Silverstone Porsche Experience Centre and it really made a difference how I brake and approach corners. it made me hungry to do more. The more confidence you have in the cars ability the quicker you will be without the need to be spending thousands on power mods that don't make much difference. I'm doing the fast road driver training down at Millbrook next year; can't wait. Once more point I may add, get the chassis set up properly at someone like Centre of Gravity. You may think your car handles well the way it is but get a fast road setup off these guys and its like having a different car.

981 CS with PASM, Chrono and 20". Getting the suspension professionally set up (camber. toe in etc) makes a huge difference to handling if it's out even just a little. Tyres are another thing people tend to skimp on. Pilot Sport 4S are a massive upgrade. Now looking into the DSC Sport suspension control box but would prefer to see more Porsche based reviews before stumping up 1k for a box of tricks that promises nirvana. Porsche have the Cayman/Boxster so tied down engine performance wise the small power gains you can extract are seriously outweighed by the cost. Better to buy the bigger engine option in the first place if that's what you feel you need. For me it's about making sure the chassis is set up to exploit the power it already has.

@stevecade857 5 жыл бұрын
@@BuckMcAntlerson My front tyres (235/35 r20) were cracking on the edge sidewall / tread but hadn't worn out when I replaced them, although getting a little low. My car suffered a lot from juddering when manoeuvring on full lock at low speed (poor suspension set up) and the front end felt.....bouncy. It's a light car with fat tyres so I put that down to the tyres being old, soft and generally worn out. In fact I now think the bouncy feel was that the tyres were in fact stiffer in their sidewall due to age. Rubber hardens as it ages and now with fresh PS4S on that bouncy feeling has gone. It's such a narrow sidewall on the 235/35 that I think any significant change in characteristics makes a dramatic change in their compression/rebound response. Tyres (not forgetting tyre pressure) also play a major role in how your suspension performs and therefore the handling, especially on responsive, light weight sports cars. Even if your tyres are not worn out the tyres general condition can majorly influence a cars handling. I am sure the professional alignment I had done at the time helped as well so it's probably worth having that done to get the best out of those expensive new tyres. Just those changes made me fall in love with the car again.

I'll throw this out here you're going to get the most out of these mods when combining them with tuning. Theirs a going theme on n/a cars that just throwing stuff on them will add power and in some cases it does but the map is not always set to adapt to things that you install and sometimes results in no power gains or losses. So if they're claiming you to intakes full exhaust etc and will gain 60hp that is 60hp with a tune.

Replaced all season tires with Michelin 4S on my 987.2 Cayman S. Substantial difference on the street. Agree on your #1, as this has helped me in other cars, but I think good summer tires should be #2.

I went with Designtek Valvetronic exhaust and now had an LSD fitted. After owning an MX5 with Torsen LSD It was the thing I was really missing from the driving experience when driving the boxster. I will probably end up doing more mods eventually though.

If you are getting more air out through the exhaust - you are only getting half the air in with only and IPD plenum.........getting the EVOMS V-Flow Air Intake from FabSpeed compliments the IPD.

That's one thing I personally think that needs done as a possible 1st mod on the Cayman, the stance! They look so wrong standard! And dropped 20-35mm really let's the car sit as it should have been from the factory! 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍 👌 👌 ✌️

I’m having cruise control added as I type, not a performance mod I know but will help. Suspension is being changed for the same H&R springs, but I’m going for Bilstein B8 springs. No need for coil overs for me with predominantly road driving. H&R anti-roll bars will give a nice handling upgrade without compromising on ride. Going for cat-back valved upgrade and ipd plenum and gt3 throttle body eventually. Hopefully this time Next year it will be all done. Be nice to see your cayman and mine together.

The performance mods I have done to my car almost mirror yours. The car: 987.2 Boxster S Black Edition. The mods: Carnewal Cayman R GT exhaust Carnewal 200 cell sports headers Fabspeed x-pipe exhaust tips 997 GT3 throttle body & IPD plenum ITG high flow filter 987 Spyder suspension (firmer with 20mm drop) What I haven’t yet had done is a remap. The butt dyno tells me that the ECU has adapted to the more efficient airflow but no doubt a remap would smooth that out and extract the best from the setup.

Hi Satch, I own a Cayman S 987.2 (2011) same colour as yours 👌 and find it to be the ultimate drivers car 🚙💨💨💨 It has 65.000 on the spedometer and I use it mostly for daily driving. However, when the time comes, I’m looking at an upgrade on the engine itself. Hartech in Bolton offers an upgrade from 3,4 to 3,9 L displacement and the use of Turbo S cylinder linings. Do you have any experience with this upgrade, or do you know of anyone who has ? Thx for all your enthustiastic videos 😉🤪 /Paul

Great video. In my case with a '06 CS MT it has been a cat-back Cargraphic Sport exhaust where even though a beautiful looking system and certainly not inexpensive, the Sport version could be a bit more loud than it is. FabSpeed remap (nice difference); and about to do the 35mm H&R's. Sway bars next? Will stop there as it is time to understand the car better. Short shifter? Maybe.

5:10 That mod creates a vacuum which sucks out all air from the system causing a negative pressure, to compensate for that the engine pulls in more fuel to balance out the pressure which results in higher HP

@@brianm2677 Raggtop helps seal the top but you can also get a hardtop. Hell, a 924 or 944 is also a great way to get into a Porsche for little money. At the club events, its interesting that 2 types of cars get all the attention.... new high end ones (GT, Turbo, etc) and old cheap ones like 986's 924's, 914's etc. My 991.1 C2S for example just gets lost in a sea of much more special cars. Get one and you won't regret it. Also, you're likely to be able to sell for the same or more than what you say for a Porsche at the bottom of the Porsche used market.

Reason I ask is I have a 987 Cayman S also, I have the ipd plenum and throttle body combo with an induction kit ready to install, and wanted to go down the route of the carnewal manifolds and backboxes aswell.
