I am a 61-year-old widow. I am living in the home that my husband and I purchased around 25 years ago. We moved in here when our son was around 13 and our daughter 11. It is a 1600 square foot house. I won't go into why selling it wouldn't be feasible at this time but basically I have decided to stay here for now. Partly because my son is staying here with me short-term and helping pay for the expenses. However in the year that I lived here alone I would close off the space I was not using and close the heating and air conditioning vents to those rooms. I would use a portable heater and Window AC for my bedroom. I did minimal laundry and was careful with water usage. This helped cut down my expenses a lot

I’m a big believer in simplifying my menu. Each week I make a big pot of oat groats or steel-cut oats in the Instant Pot followed by a week’s worth of brown rice. Then I’ll make some type of bean. On Sunday night I make a big pot of soup. Breakfast is oats and fruit, lunch is soup, salad and bread, dinner is rice, frozen vegetables and beans with different types of ethnic flavorings. Super cheap and super easy. And a hint for the heated mattress cover. Mine has two zones with two controllers. I only plug in one. I sleep on only half the bed, so I only heat half the bed.

I've lived alone for over 25 years and am pretty good with this. Went thru divorce and decided to stay single. I've saved my money over the years, been frugal and know how to cook, so that's no problem. Own my own home, drive a 14 year old Honda fit car, and as a senior now I find that home repairs...etc take big bites out of $ my budget. But luckily I'm prepared due to wise and safe investments. YES to the heated mattress pad! Have used 1 for years. An added bonus is that the heat really soothes my arthritic joints. My suggestion is to cover the pad with a moisture resistant (not plastic) mattress protector. My husband was ill for many years prior to his passing. The protector kept the pad clean whenever he had a bout of vomiting or spilling liquids. Made cleaning up a lot easier.

Buying food for one person is a challenge. As I get older, I just can't eat as much as I used to. Instead of a bowl of soup, I only want a cup. And no more big plates of pasta, beans or rice either. Now I cook a meal that lasts for 2-3 days. I prefer fresh vegetables instead of frozen so I roast cauliflower, broccoli, potatoes, carrots, etc....eat a small portion and blitz the rest into soup. That extra pasta, beans or rice gets thrown into the soup too. Add crusty bread and top with shredded cheese, sour cream or drizzle chili oil.

Flannel sheets and menopause cures the cold nights lol. I do love flannel sheets though, they don't feel as cold when you first get into bed. I usually cook extra on Sunday so I can enjoy leftovers a couple days during the week. Bake a chicken breast and use the cooked meat for other things. I like making chicken soup - just cook noodles and some carrots - add chicken bouillon, and chicken meat and voila! Done in 15 minutes!

I have actually been living alone for most of my life, since about age 21. Im 32 and plan on staying alone as I don’t want marriage or kids. I am indeed the type who eats the same stuff everyday day, as I can’t really cook and don’t have much interest in food as such. I also use a heated mattress pad, and I also have a heated blanket on my couch, as I don’t really turn the heating on living in an electric heating only flat which doesn’t get cold enough to put the heating on. I also wash dishes my hand and hand laundry, as dishwashers and dryers just guzzle electricity, and the water bill is much less than electricity units so works out cheaper. I have my mattress pad connected via an alexa plug with timers, so I never have to forget to turn it on or off as it automatically does it.

Hey, Kate! Definitely love talking about money! When you were talking about insurance benefits at work, I wanted to say that folks who are already retired or over 65 and have a Medicare Advantage Plan need to check their benefits there, or now that it's open enrollment, shop for the best benefits. Because I have a "chronic condition", I've been getting $50/month towards food, in addition to $145/quarter for over-the-counter benefits, Silver Sneakers membership (free Basic gym membership), and my plan was also paying for the service for my medical alert pendant. Some of those benefits are going away in my current plan, so I'm switching to another one for 2025 that is going to give me $75/month for food and $175/quarter for OTC, plus the Silver Sneakers, PLUS I'm going to be getting $5/month back on my Medicare Part B! I'm in Florida, but I'm sure there are plans in other states that are similar. So be sure to shop around!

When ive lived alone ive treated the kitchen, the food, and the larder opposite of Kate; and yes I've used the stockpot, Foley food mill, stand mixer, and even the pantry shelves as living space room decor. A decent fridge and freezer have been a part of my renting decision too. Ive treated dishes with 4 and 6 servings as batch and freezer meal cooking; cooking out of the cook books for 1 or 2 is actually pretty expensive. With an eye on a potential move when renting, ive stocked the kitchen cooking items and food for frugal living just like you see on the frugal living, prepp, housewife maven utubes etc... BTW - Use plastic wrap for freezing portioned items. Wrap tightly but add either a second wrap or enough to wrap the item in 2 or 3 layers. It works for short term freezing in the refridgerator freezer from less than a week to about 3 months. Use repurposed bread bags to keep your portioned items gathered or to freeze larger volumes.

That is a great idea, but old now and I guess I've reached the point where I just don't care. (I have a homemade cover over my coffee table and store several boxes of canned goods under it and use so many other "hidden" places for my books, kitchen appliances not often used . And I served Thanksgiving dinner for 21 family and friends with particle board sheets atop saw horses covered with white bed sheets and multiple turkeys,p(cooked , baked for 4 days prior. I think it was ok because there were very few leftovers. Only reason we didn't do it in the garage is we had just moved in and had very little actual furniture). I jyst read my own comment and I think it may have sounded offensive. Definitely not meant that way. I do think that is a wonderful idea and honestly wish I'd thought of it.

I have gotten out of the habit of not doing take out (fast food) and this month's tracker has really opened my eyes that I need to cut way back (I did cut way back in September, so I know it is possible 🙂). When I moved into the house I am in now, the previous owner left an armoire that my hubby and I decided to use as a 'pantry'. We have one shelf for the dog stuff, one shelf of all our spices and one shelf of 'stock ups'. The two shelfs (behind closed doors) have some extra baking stuff and extra 'stock up' stuff that doesn't look 'pretty' enough to be left out 😆

I can understand the want for electric mattress pads and blankets. I've never used them or felt the need to. I use either flannel or fleece sheets. I use at least one fleece blanket and then another blanket made out of heavy fleece and lamb's wool together. If it's really cold, I'll use a thickly quilted duvet on top of that. I keep the heat off at night until it freezes. Then, I keep it just above freezing inside so the pipes don't burst. When I get up, I turn the heat up to 64-65° and wear fleece until it heats up. As long as my nose isn't cold, I'm fine. I've lived alone for decades and decades... about 40 years and I LOVE IT!!! I can't believe how fortunate I am that I've been able to do it!!!❤❤❤ Before that, I was married and I've had a couple of house mates for short periods, but I LOVE being able to have all the time and space I want and need. Pick up a couple of books from the library aimed at people who want to learn how to sell things. Leave ALL your payment instruments or capabilities at home then visit a place like a rent-a-center on your own without any extra people and ask about rent to own. Or, visit a car lot to look at cars. Furniture places are another good place to visit.. DO NOT sign anything, DO NOT give them even your address, and if they put a pen in your hand put it down like a hot potato. Explore and experience some of the standard sales techniques. Both single men and women often get the sales treatment. With the info from the books aimed at making sales, begin watching utube, TV, and printed ads from a different perspective. Hone your awareness.

Hi Kate I've been absent from KZbin for like a month or so and I'm just getting started today catching up on my favorite KZbinrs.... And you are the second person that had mentioned a heated mattress pad.... Maybe that's something I really do need to look into then

Thank you! It really helps to narrow down what to prioritize:)

@@KateKaden I do a gratitude journal each day, but a happiness audit is amazing, as we often focus on what makes us unhappy and spend money trying to figure it out. I recently worked out that walking nature tracks with my dog and going for bike rides makes me supremely happy. I ditched my $1600 a year gym membership. I live in Brisbane Australia and live alone (mostly). I host international language students to top up the bank balance and get happiness from learning about different cultures.

I don't need a heated mattress pad, BUT, my feet are always cold. Maybe I will get a foot warmer. I don't want to turn the heat up for that small part of my body that's cold!

@annmarie1758 how about a hot water bottle for your feet?

I make sandwiches for work at home. When I buy the topping - hey - that is what I eat that week, or until its eaten up. For example, roasbeef, smoked salmon with cream cheese, salami with cream cheese... and pickles, salads, saladressing. I guess my sandwiches would cost a fortune if I were to buy them. Dinners, when I'm alone, I am happy if I make a big batch of something, and freeze portion sizes. Dont have to eat the same thing every night, if you freeze leftovers. Breakfasts is toasted bread with honey and a glass of orange juice - every single day. And i make a Coffee Latte at home, and bring it in a thermal cup - for my long commute to work. Once a week I treat myself to a barista coffee at my work. It is very cheap though. $2! 🤩

Humans are social creatures and we have to have social interaction; ideally beyond the workplace. When ive lived alone i have had music, news, or TV playing in the background. Stoney silence half the day or so when you are home isn't a good thing for most people. Along this thread, for goodness sake, don't fill your social interaction needs with shopping, eating out, clubbing, at the casino, etc... This is not to say dont shop, eat out, and all the things but in moderation. Male or female, consider clubbing or cocktail houring in a group and don't be too free with the information that will put someone at your doorstep.

Great advice. After my divorce in my 40s, I would meet my dates out somewhere. A restaurant, movie , musium, theater, etc... I did not let them know where I lived. I was afraid of any weirdo stalker situations. When I was in my 20s, I rented a 3 bedroom house with 2 male friends. One night, my roommate ran a guy off for me. After 1 date, I didn't want to see him again. He wasn't taking "no" for an answer. It was a bit scary. The man I'm with now....I'm 60, we have been together 10 years, he was the only man who was empathic and respectful of my boundaries in the beginning. Therefore, he is the winner! LOL 🥰🥰🥰

I live alone. I have stuff stored that I wouldn't eat every day, mac and cheese, canned stuff, cans of soup. It saves me from takeout when I dont want to cook and want something different.
