One of the reason why I love psychology, is the fact that psychology helps one to have a more objective view towards life, some people are lawyers, and the only thing they know is about law, some people are engineers, and the only thing they know is engineering, some people are doctors, and the only thing they know is medicine, some people are teachers and the only thing they know is teaching. But I feel you cannot say the same thing with psychology because is not specific, you can relate to everyone on a personal level.

That’s such a great point, thank you! Yes, the holistic approach to psychology means that on balance we’re more likely to be critical of our personal stance, meaning we’re usually less likely to fall into very restricted ways of thinking. Thank you!

Since I began my journey in Psychology, I always felt that psychology is the projection of the mind onto the world around us. That’s how I see things and make sense of it.

Brilliant video again. I loved all of these points! Especially the one about how those in psychology are in a rut in their early 20s struggling to get a job and money, but then are happy in their job once they have secured the job they want unlike others because I often worry about not earning as much as my friends at the moment, so this helped me to feel motivated xx

thank you for this video! it's so comforting and made me reflect on my own reasons to love psychology. i really like the point about struggling at the beginning of your career journey but feeling more fulfilled later on - having just finished my undergrad the prospects seem pretty bleak since everything looks so competitive. but it's much more helpful to look at it as a journey which equips you with all sorts of skills instead of being scared of not having your whole future figured out

Super relatable (for anyone out there in the race for the DClinPSy or becoming a psychologist in any way) - after graduating from an MRes Clinincal Psych it took me nearly a year to land an assistant psych job and then go onto pwp training and in that time it felt like i was so behind all of my friends who did physics and computer science as they got grad jobs with good salaries straight away. But like you said Aika most of them are going now through their quarter life crisis while i'm sure of the direction i want my career to go into. It's tough in the beginning but once you find your way you'll enjoy this kind of job since it's so meaningful ^_^

I love this video! And I totally understand the struggles of studying psychology, but it is totally worth it :) I feel like those who pursue a career as psychologists usually do not change jobs to a completely different field and as you as said, are generally more happy and satisfied with their jobs. This job gives so much fulfillment and meaning to our lives (it is a selfish cause, but that is okay :). You are literally helping save people from emotional hardships and more... I am beginning my master's in Clinical Child's Psychology October (in Israel you do not need Ph.D. to become a psychologist), and now I understand why this is such a long road with many many demands! You need to be emotionally mature and already exposed to a lot of things in order to be able to handle what patients bring into therapy...If you that much of a passion for psychology, you shouldn't let anything stand in your way! And please keep uploading videos, we need representation :)

Thank you for this! Ironically, due to the pandemic I think that having a psychology degree may be more secure/marketable than other subjects now. Lots of my friends who are pursuing careers in the arts/research/ finance etc have sadly lost opportunities, but roles in healthcare haven't been effected to the same extent. I worked as a healthcare assistant alongside my degree which was a steady income that I thought I'd continue in but I am now 1 week into an NHS AP job. I just finished my Psychology BSc at Sussex. I found yrs 1 and 2 tedious/difficult (and did quite badly) but final year made the whole thing worth it! I am interested in autism and my diss. supervisor gave me free reign to do whatever I wanted. I interviewed lots of autistic women and self taught qualitative methods to analyse my data. Having the opportunity to literally design a study (rather than just use secondary data) taught me so much and it was the most fun thing ever (sad I know) and writing it made lockdown bearable. Sometimes I wish that I did MH nursing as it seems like a more secure and interesting route into working in mental health, I haven't ruled out doing a conversion. Did you ever consider re-specialising/ pursuing another registered MH role besides the DClinPsy/ graduate PWP?

Love this! Such a good point in that through the pandemic none of us were furloughed so bizarrely we were in the most secure position. Great to highlight that, thank you. MH nursing sounds very interesting although having worked with them before, their job is way more stressful and I really respect that though probably couldn’t do it myself. I’ve considered psychiatry before though the lack of focus on talking therapies / hyper focus on pharmacology put me off

Aspects of Psychology I ❤️ Biopsychology- Very surprising, I guess we tend to enjoy studying something that is concrete. Personality and Socio & Cultural Psychology- the Jordan Peterson world. Clinical Psychology is inherently interesting but is a mission to get where you want to be in terms of a career. Psychodynamic psychology- dreams, pineal gland, higher consciousness, pretty much every interesting YT video put into learning material! Aspects I abhor: Research Psychology. Research is fun but doing experiments on a psychological basis is not. It’s almost feel like it’s trying to be valid scientific research but it can’t. And some things are just bleeding common sense! Don’t need equations and graphs for it. Learning about concepts such as operant conditioning. It’s interesting at first but a lot of is abstract. It’s honestly talking about nothing if you really think about it. “Sensation” and “perception” module. I love illusions but it’s so boring learning why we see illusions in psychology speech. “Language” as in semantics, top down processing- weird module for this subject.

Right now, i am currently studying visual arts in a ib school, and i am very interested in taking art psycology in the near future. Im too young for me to be thinking so much, but i really think that pursuing two things i love most is the way for me. However, i am faced with a dilemma ofc if i should do something i am passionate abt or what i can succeed in financially and in terms of job opportunities :( hopefully i can find out what i can do in the future!

Hi, I was wondering when you were applying for clinical psychology doctorate , have you looked at doing it in the US? if so , could you brief me in 😂😂.I seen your other videos on becoming a clinical psychologist and hoping to do the program in the US . And generally, a goal of mine was to migrate to the US and work there. Thanks, very balanced . haha

Yes I have 😂 but it’s so difficult if you’re already going through Uk route. Easier if you’re going there for a phd but it’s like 5 years long at least. You have to go through state specific exams and do a specific amount of clinical hours, and go through all the loops of showing that you have the sufficient experience that they need. Even before that you need someone to sponsor your work visa which is very rare. So it seems kinda impossible sadly. Let me know how you get on with it though!

Hey!! I am very interested in clinical neuropsychology, and I have a few questions. At what point in the doctorate do you specialize? Or do you have to do further study on top of the doctorate? Also, from your journey so far, would you say that it is so intense that your social life has suffered?

Good question - I have no idea! For neuropsychology/CBT etc yes you would likely have to specialise further. As for the second question, no I don’t think so. I think I like to balance my work life intensely with a social life too
