Id really like to thank you for your lessons. This one in particular, is fantastic. Most teachers only worry about the fingering hand. The left, for most of us. Constantly creating different fingerings for your left hand. The problem is, your left hand can be fast as you want, but if your right, (picking) hand isn't in synch, it will sound like shit. Great video. Thanks

You're very welcome! Rhythm is something I've gravitated towards more and more over the years. Students I work with now go through a LOT of rhythm work so that they CAN play the crazy fast stuff eventually and have far more success doing so. You can't shred with poor rhythm!

Thanks for the video. Really struggling with riffs like bark at the moon because my right hand control isn't up to par.

Welcome! Have you worked Bark at the Moon up with a metronome?
@sploit777

Mile High Shred I have not. But after watching multiple videos including yours I understand the importance of it and have just started using a metronome the other day when doing exercises but not with bark at the moon yet.

Good to hear you've started using the metronome. I had a student who wanted to learn that song. We broke it down into bite sized pieces and worked up each part with the metronome until he could do the whole thing.

At 8:30 you begin talking about diagonal lines but I don't see any. I see a pattern of two or three horizontal hypens followed by a vertical line at the end of the hyphens.

The beginner needs an exercise where they can practice judging how far they need to move the pick to go from any string to any other string. If you're needing to play two consecutive notes that take you from string 5 to string 2, plucking string 1 or 3 instead of 2 is a problem. Same with any other combination of strings and distances between those strings. You have to get the feel for distances between strings, and without exercises designed specifically for that purpose, it takes too drag a** long to learn how to do. All guitarists need to be able to do this using just downstrokes before they worry about fast guitar riffs using alternate picking on the same or adjacent strings.

good stuff. Do you have any trick or tips for pick hand arthritis?
@Milehighshred
@Milehighshred 6 жыл бұрын
Thankfully, I have not had to deal with this personally. However, I've read from many places how diets high in omega-3s can help with the inflammation of arthritis. Certain exercises and stretches can be helpful. I would just google those. My dad, who does have some arthritis, is finding some benefits to using and hand/forearm extensor exerciser. He told me a pain he had in his thumb is gone from using them. Here's a link: amzn.to/2oCVpXx I'm also told that warming up slowly can help if you have arthritis. Icing your hand after you play to keep down the swelling may work too.

Do you have any tips for controlling the tension in right hand? Right now I play in 154bpm 16th notes and I can do it but after a minute and a half my had just really tenses. Thank you in advance! Greetings from Poland!
@Milehighshred
@Milehighshred 7 жыл бұрын
Your hand is tensing up because you are picking constant 16th notes at a decent pace for a minute and half straight. That is perfectly natural! If someone was doing biceps curls with a light weight, but kept doing it nonstop their biceps would eventually get tense. You are just working your muscles to the point of fatigue. It happens. Eventually, you can build up your endurance for that speed. You can build up endurance for higher speeds. My endurance has changed a LOT over the years. However, I still get tension in both hands and arms if I play really fast without breaks. Tension happens. Fatigue happens. I believe you are just fine :)

Cool! I haven't found any good advice for that particular topic anywhere on youtube. I'm guessing it really just boils down to more time spent with the ol' metronome. A strange problem I have is that I can't just start galloping (fast anyways). My wrist just freezes up if I try to gallop before I've "warmed up" first (I just have to hit the string once or twice to get started alternate picking and then I can usually do it). Do other people have that problem? Thanks. Liking your videos.
@Milehighshred

Metronome work is always a pretty good choice! I'd have to see what happens when you freeze up. Any way you could get a video for me?
@josephbrandenburg4373
@josephbrandenburg4373 8 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't be much to see. What happens is, my brain says "OK, gallop!" and my wrist is like "lol, nope." and what comes out is just eighths. I think I try to start out too fast when I just shouldn't. Also, thanks! I'm gonna sign up to the shred letter.

Joseph Brandenburg depends on the gallop. If it's 1 and uh 2 and uh 3 and uh 4 and uh think about pushing down on your down beats and palm mute. If it's 1 ee and 2 ee and 3 ee and 4 ee and for me it's more of a flutter like a tremelo. Just think about picking your picking hand up a bit on your rests and driving back down on your down beat.

It will happen some day. Not sure when. I've had to change a lot of things with good ol' life recently, so I haven't been making videos. I am, however, working on full length instruction courses, and picking exercises will certainly be one of those courses. No release date yet, but until I get all these courses done I have in mind, I won't tackle anything else.
