I never heard about the penalties for starting before or after your tee time. Most times we get up there and go around the time when prompted. I do not think disqualification should happen after 7 mins I think which was said. Maybe shoud add 2 strokes every 2 minutes delay. Thanks for posting. I learned new things.

The one or two club lengths issue is easy to remember (well it is to me) and if my partners are unsure and ask I tell them, if you move the ball first it’s one club length and no penalty, if you measure from the ball it’s two club lengths and a penalty.

Under Provisional ball. Tappin said: "If you find your original ball you CAN play it". The correct wording is "MUST" play it. Once the original is found (not OB), the provisional ceases to exist. Example: First ball on par 3 might be OB. Provisional ball goes in the hole for a possible total score of 3. The player finds his first ball NOT OB. He cannot choose to take his provisional ball score.
@simonleach3812
@simonleach3812 6 ай бұрын
If you or a fellow competitor find your original ball, you MUST play it because you are not permitted to have the choice of 2 balls - which would be unfair. However, if you soon realize that your first ball will be pretty much unplayable even before finding it, you cannot "declare it lost" - there is no such thing under rules. You can ask your fellow competitors to stop looking and play your provisional but if someone were to still find it within 3 minutes (perhaps an opponent!) before you get to your provisional, you have to play the first even if you declare this first one ball unplayable (and then proceed under Rule Rule 19). Note a provisional ball is for a ball that is lost or out of bounds, and cannot be an option for an unplayable ball again, because this is like having a choice of two balls.

Also in my world often abnormal ground conditions are not marked, although it is clear that you are in tractor or green keeper/maintenance damage- can you clear up what the rules say about this- can you still claim GUR even if it is not marked as such? ( I guess your playing partners would have to agree?
@Randsurfer
@Randsurfer 6 ай бұрын
This is the least able to "clear up" rule in golf. It is both vague and arbitrary and subject to interpretation. It is most "clear" when you have a super diligent tournament committee that inspects every inch of the course before play and physically marks the GUR with paint. This is a massive job given the square area of a golf course. I've done it, and it is tough to not miss anything. Also, the damage can occur after the inspection and marking has occurred.
@bantoniplakantry9138
@bantoniplakantry9138 6 ай бұрын
@@Randsurfer Look up the definition of GUR in the Rules of Golf. Whilst there are some things that are specifically mentioned, GUR generally has to be defined by the committee. So if there's a big bare patch in the fairway and it's not marked as GUR and the committee hasn't designated bare patches are GUR, it's not GUR. Players just can't decide that something is an abnormal course condition. It's either listed in the definition of GUR or the committee has designated is as GUR, otherwise it's not GUR.

@@bantoniplakantry9138 This thread is talking about tire tracks from a tractor, etc. You can take free relief from an UNMARKED tractor track if the committeE has declared local rule that says so. The problem is that even with the local rule, not every tire track gets relief. It becomes a judgement call which is why it is not easy to "clear up" the rule. Therefore you are partly correct and partly incorrect with regards to damage to the course from maintenance vehicles.

@@bantoniplakantry9138 Even if tracks are GUR by local rule, not every track would be considered for free relief. For example a "depression" caused by a tyre would not, but a deeper trench would. Can you go thru the scenario where you have red or yellow but ball flies directly into the water without hitting land and what the options are?
@Betleyman_7
@Betleyman_7 6 ай бұрын
The key issue is establishing where your ball crossed the penalty area line. Once that is decided you proceed as per rules for red and yellow penalty areas. If you find your ball in a penalty area it is important to proceed from where the ball entered the penalty area which may not be directly adjacent to where the ball lies, if for instance, it had clearly rolled several yards into the penalty area. The reference point is always where it crossed the penalty area line.

@@Betleyman_7 so do you only replay from tees if ball goes OB? And again, if it hit in bounds, then goes OB, can you play from point it entered OB?
@Betleyman_7
@Betleyman_7 6 ай бұрын
@@garcon8552 If you hit a ball out of bounds your only option is to play from where you took the shot (stroke and distance) under penalty of one shot. So, if you hit a tee shot OOB then you must retake the tee shot and it will be your third shot. If you are not sure it the ball went OOB you can play a provisional ball (also your third shot) which becomes your ball in play if you cannot find your original or find it OOB. If the only place your ball may be lost is in a penalty area you are not allowed to play a provisional ball, so if you hit a shot into a penalty area you can play the ball as it lies in the penalty area if possible or, under penalty of one stroke, play the shot from the same spot or play a ball from a spot no closer to the hole on a line from the pin to the point your ball crossed the penalty line, or in the case of a red penalty area you have an extra optiona to drop laterally within in 2 club lengths of the point your ball crossed the penalty line but no closer to the hole. In essence, if it is a yellow penalty area and you cannot play the ball as it lies, the penalty area must be between you and the flag when you take your next shot, with a red penalty area it may be possible to avoid this with a lateral drop as in the video. It's all in the Rules of Golf, rule 17

On provisional balls, an incident happened yesterday in an Open I was playing. My playing partner hit off line to the right and decided to play a provisional, which he hit close to where the first ball had gone. It so happened that we found both balls but, by accident, he picked up his first ball and played his provisional ball. Should he have replaced the first ball or was the provisional ball now the 'ball in play'? If he had replaced the original ball, what penalty should have been applied?

Yea its cool to order your custom numbered balls, but if all of them are identical you either need to remember to change the mark or hope that they land so far apart there's no confusion. I keep a sleeve of #7s that are used for putting practice and provisional shots. This also brings up why you should have a UNIQUE mark. I can't count the number of times someone has said "I play ProV1 with a black (or blue) dot", which happens to also be what another player is using. Get some unique color sharpies, use multiple dots or something else. I put 2 dots on opposite sides of the number. Purple on left, green on right. If the first ball is found (not lost or OB), the provisional ball ceases to exist as an option. To answer your question: The provisional ball was not now "in play", even if he chose to play it. He should correct his error by returning to the location of his first ball and playing it from there. The strokes taken at the provisional ball do not count. He will take a 2-stroke penalty for playing a "wrong ball" (choosing to play with his provisional ball) Note: There is only a single 2-stroke penalty. If, he takes 2 or more strokes with the wrong ball, the penalty does not compound. It is a single penalty of 2 strokes because it is a repetition of the same mistake. If he plays the entire hole with the wrong ball and does not correct his error before starting the next hole, he is disqualified from the competition.

The “reasonable” scenario never happens, especially on tour. It has to be way more “unreasonable” than what you described. And since it’s your competitor who is the one who challenges it, you can call in an official. If no official is around, you can play 2 balls, one your way and one the other player says, write down both scores, and figure it out later on after the round with a official or neutral third party’s decision.

Ridiculous that there is penalty for teeing off early or late in a normal Saturday comp. Most of competitors will get a penalty as nobody bothers with strictly teeing of at the exact minute.

yea, they don't talk about what have done so much of life in your non league/tournament organized rounds. Roll it in the fairway.. you deserve a decent lie for hitting it. And the pro golfers that argue that that is not golf, think a guy getting in maybe 2 rounds a month, finally hits a good drive on the long par 5 but can't go for it over the water due to all the horrible fairway lies.... yea, most folks are not coming back to have their game changed significantly by poor fairways. So many things for mega decades that just had to be, no longer are. Spike marks on green lol.

@6:30 disagree. Only the player can decide what club he wants to use and whether it is reasonable or not. Hitting a driver to advance the ball is not unreasonable since there is an obstruction he needs to hit around. It may be a terrible choice of club but that doesn't make it unreasonable. The player would be given free relief and then once he has taken full relief he can choose which club he wants to use from the new ball location. There are 14 clubs in the bag and you can use any of them at any time you wish. This basically voids the unreasonable part of the rule. Also you have to take into account every type of golfer in the unreasonable rule. A handicapped golfer using a cart seat may hit a very different club than an able bodied golfer.

@@krusher74 Thats my point. It was usless inforamtion. Either you know it by heart or the rules never take effect in real life. (The one youre talking about might be used once in a blue moon while people break the rule every single day.)
