Jason Fenske has so many videos on tires, but specifically one titled "Do You Need Winter Tires If It Doesn't Snow?" covers summer vs winter tires in cold dry conditions, and he found that the summer tires had a SIGNIFICANTLY shorter stopping distance than the winter tires, at ~25 F, well below their rated temperature range. Obviously on snow or ice, that will flip, but he didn't cover rainy, slightly-above-freezing conditions.

I’m surprised the Michelin CrossClimate 2 wasn’t mentioned, even if just generically, given the Vredestein sponsorship. This tire performs on par with most snow tires, only falling short of the very best by a small margin. It also excels in wet conditions and offers significantly longer tread life compared to a typical snow tire. This means you’ll maintain deeper tread depth for longer, which translates to sustained performance in both wet and snowy conditions. The CrossClimate 2 is an excellent choice for those living in temperate winter climates near mountains. It provides a safe and capable ride in dry and wet conditions during colder months while also handling snow and ice effectively for trips to the mountains. I personally use this tire as my “winter” setup in Seattle on my Mk7 Golf R, and it performs exceptionally well for mountain pass travel.

To the beginning: years ago i read a nice formed way of saying it on a german Mercedes Forum: "A set of premium tires for the season always costs less than a new bumper." Which could get the additions: or any damage done by using the wrong tyres for the situation or by ultra cheap tyres. The thing i noticed from KZbin is that americans not just want the same tyre all year round in passenger cars, but many offroad enthusiasts think that their AT or even MT tyres are great in snow. Few of them have ever treid real winter tyres. The few that have then know that their AT tyres are not great in snow, just better than summer tyres. (which is what the 3 peak symbol means: noticably better than a summer tyre in the snow. ) 9:10 What? winter tyres being sketchy in the wet? I am driving in the alps for 26 years now, and if you ever tried summer tyres on wet cold roads and winter tyres on the same wet cold roads you will find that winter tyres are superior in these conditions. Sure if you go for a nordic winter tyre then that's not the case. They are the best in snow and on ice but shittier on asphalt dry and wet than a normal winter tyre. You can also look for an old video of the tyre reviews channel, he had the opportunity to test summer, winter, (european) all season and nordic winter tyres in a temperture controlled tunnel. And he showed the grip change due to temperature on dry and wet. And the expectable differences on ice and snow. IIRC it was around 7°C where the winter tyre surpassed the summer tyre in grip in the wet and i think around 4°C in the dry. With the old 5 speed in that CLK it's probably better if you don't use the paddles or manual mode. Funnily enough in my W212 E63 (with the M156 engine) in some occasions it's the opposite. Sure it's not a Porsche double clutch and you need to get used to it (to pull slightly before you want the gearchange) but the auto mode(s) sometimes have a glitch in mine. (or maybe it's the thing you often mention with auto gearboxes where it's due to some noise testing that they don't change gear and after a certain time they do.) My guess with the swap is that it's one of the 4cyl Diesel gearboxes. But how he manages to get the engine ecu accepting that it won't get info of the gearbox i have no clue about. (Isn't the engine ecu only gicing you power if it knows in which gear it is and what the actual rpms of the gearbox output is?)

All seasons aren’t the best option but they work well where I live. I don’t put them on performance cars. But the daily SUVS have them. Fine during the summer and enough to get you home in a few inches of snow. They stay parked until the roads are clear which is usually w/in a few hours of the snow stopping. A lot of people don’t have the room for a second set of wheels. Which is compounded by multiple cars.

As someone who runs summer tires year round here in GA I'd like to see testing of summer vs all season tires in colder but not snow and ice conditions. In the past couple of years ive had PS4S, PS4, and Pirelli PZ4 tires. Lots of days in the morning im driving below the recommended temperature for summer tires (usually 40°F) but it warms up to above that midday. In the cold they lose grip, but still feel grippier than all seasons. PZ4 was the worst, but they were a step below the Michelins in the warm too. I am not worried about snow since we all just take the day off when it snows.
@papa_pt11 күн бұрын
I'm in the same GA situation. I'm mainly worried about the compound cracking or something ☠️ last year ran extreme contact sports all winter but this week has been WAY colder than usual I definitely feel less grip at 40 degrees and below even on completely dry pavement

@@papa_pt I've never had cracking with any of the tires I've run. Cold definitely lessens the grip, but it's definitely still manageable. I might try continental tires for my next set.

Common misconception that winter tires are mandatory in Europe during winter. The law here in Germany only states that they are mandatory when the road conditions are winterlike meaning ice or snow. Technically you could drive with summer tires on a sunny December day as long as it's not icy or snowy.
@PoliPantev10 күн бұрын
in my EU country the law says - from 15 nov to 1st of march you EITHER have to have winter tires or 4mm thread depth (summer or allseasons). Anyways the law doesn't matter because everyone who lives where it snows will have winter tires or will buy some after they crash/dont get out of their parking space. @jasonmoyer12 күн бұрын
I'm surprised you never used all-seasons when you lived in Pittsburgh. The thing that pushes me towards all-seasons are the insane temperature swings that we have here for 10-11 months of the year, plus how much more likely it is that I'm driving on a treated wet road or a very thin dusting rather than actual snow. The % difference in stopping power between a good all season and a good winter on a wet road is greater than the % difference in stopping power on snow.
@Bob_Smith1911 күн бұрын
I find it odd as well. Most people run all seasons for a myriad of reasons. They get you home and most people sit there until the snow is cleared which is quickly. If you’re stuck in a foot or more of snow you were not paying attention to the forecast.
@EUC-lid11 күн бұрын
Winter tires don’t disintegrate because the OAT hits 80° for a weekend. Just buy a set of wheels and try them. You won’t go back to all-seasons.
@jasonmoyer11 күн бұрын
@@EUC-lid The temperature concern is less of an issue than the idea of spending extra money on something that is significantly worse in the wet, when 99% of my winter driving is on wet roads because I'm in PA where the roads are saturated in salt the moment it gets below 35 and there's any kind of moisture in the forecast. If I lived in an area where there was accumulated snow or ice on the road every winter then I would absolutely swap tires.
@EUC-lid11 күн бұрын
@@jasonmoyer it’s not really extra money unless you trade out cars often. You invest a little in some used wheels and then you have two sets of tires. They set not currently mounted to the car don’t wear while they’re stored. When you’re done with the car you sell the used wheels and snowtires for more money than just the wheels cost. I feel you on the salt. I left the East Coast where they salt the F outta the planet, destroying every car I’ve ever daily-ed. Out West the cars last forever without all the salt. I live in the PNW now, and snow tires are mandatory if you want to drive away from the coasts during the wet season. No regrets in the rain with any of the snow tires I’ve ever driven. I don’t know what the (currently) Bay Area Californians are bitching about. If you’re accustomed to summer tires, the first day of winter tires feels like a severe lack of traction, but you quickly learn to adapt to the new envelope. It’s more about consistency regardless of winter weather conditions than performance.

I'd like to do something similar and swap a 7-speed manual into my 2015 Vanquish. Anyone want to sponsor that?

How is the V12 bad for putting lots of hp from low rpm? Constant max power 4800rpm to 5100rpm and capped torque so it's 1000Nm constant from 2000rpm to 4000rpm It SHIFTS out of 4th at 300km/h!

Is the average winter temperature in your primary location not too hot for most, if not all, winter specific compounds?
@indiebekonn11 күн бұрын
Seems like that would be the reason for sub-optimal performance in the wet. Because most winter tyres are so much better than any other compound when it comes to wet grip at around or below 7 degrees Centigrade.
@NoClassic11 күн бұрын
@@indiebekonn Could be possible. Most winter compounds start to degrade in grip and wear performance around 50F.

It’s not just the tread depth, but the rubber compound as it gets colder, the rubber becomes hard, and lacks the ability to grip even on clean asphalt

I ran blazzaks on my LS4 one year and they were basically pencil erasers. They worked great for studless tires but they were down to the wear bars after 1 season. Put only 100 miles every day on them. Got stuck in a parking lot once. Studded Winter Ipikes were better on 18inch powder days

Shock of shocks, a literal track version of a high performance version of a rear-wheel drive Car isn't great on damp roads!

Seems there is some fraud in hyphen business as buying inventory is cost of goods but is not an expense to reduce income statement until a realization event occurs such as sales or write off

46:50 Derek spits absolute facts about BS's superior appearance and the ugliness of the DTM. Thank god, I thought I was on my own.

I delivered parts from Sacramento to Reno over the Donner pass over the winter in a RWD box van with allseasons for a bit... Driving something like that in blizzard conditons with a foot+ of fresh snow on the road is certainly a humbling experience, and the best way to learn to be a good driver :P

If you're going to go to the trouble of putting a different car in the background every episode, couldn't you spend a bit of time lighting it better?

My understanding is that weather forecasts are always conservatively wet, to ensure fewer customer complaints. I'm happy that Vangina got a new set of dancing shoes
