The idiots just sit there and watch another squirrel walk in instead of trying to get out when the door opens. Not so smart after all, it seems.

You can only catch large numbers of grey squirrels during specific times of the year. They prefer acorns to peanuts or peanut butter, so if there is an oak tree anywhere nearby, you probably wont catch many grey squirrels in the fall when acorns are plentiful. They have an insatiable appetite for acorns and will ignore peanuts when acorns are available. I've tried vacuuming my yard of acorns but that is a waste of time because many more fresh acorns will fall within 24 hours In the winter, they are not active in northern climates and leaving your trap set outside is usually a waste of time and energy, unless it is an unusually warm day. I have my squirrel traps in very close proximity to my bird feeders and that is probably why they are lulled into a false sense of security. They probably think with all the birds chowing down relentlessly, they have discovered the best free banquet in the neighborhood. In the last 6 years I have disposed of over 470 grey squirrels but I get most of them in the early AM in the spring and summer. If you are a late sleeper leave the trap outside over night and hope nothing steals the bait during the night. If you rise early, put the trap out at sunrise. Once it gets too hot outside they retire for the day. I seldom catch any grey squirrels after high noon. if you ever buy another squirrel trap, go with the Havahart model # 1083 EZ-set trap. That is the best trap for grey squirrels by a wide margin. But you have to buy it online. Lowes and Home Depot do not stock that trap for some crazy reason. JM Robert: Do you think this trap would be effective to try and trap starlings ? Starlings are an invasive species that are driving me crazy with my bird feeders. They arrive by the hundreds and they don't leave until every bit of food is gone. Did you find a good price for this trap ? I am going to begin looking for the price and dimensions immediately. If anyone tells you how smart grey squirrels are, feel free to refer them to this video. Even mice would realize 5 already trapped mice are "unusual".
@migbham12 жыл бұрын
Afraid that the mice aren't any less likely to be trapped than the squirrels. Both mice and squirrels are excellent problem solvers when driven by the urge to obtain food, but they are both equally lacking in that attribute that you are projecting onto them: Empathy - the ability to see one of your fellows in an undesirable situation and pause to ponder how they got there and what it feels like to them. The squirrels and mice alike are consumed only with, "I'd better get some of those sunflower seeds before those other bastards eat them all." 😉

@@migbham1 The neighbor across the street from me had her previous house burn down when a mouse got into the back of her refrigerator and chewed the wrong wires. She told me she didn't even know there was a mouse in the house because she never saw it. I have 4 Micro-Processor mouse traps in my garage that are motion activated. Any mouse that goes in, aint coming out alive. And I just noticed they have a larger version for rats now too.
@migbham12 жыл бұрын
@@ccdogpark That's scary crap, regarding the neighbor's house fire. Wondering to myself whether that trap that's big enough to catch the rat might also work on squirrels. Would you mind, please, sharing the brand of trap you're using? I'm not trying to be funny by saying this - I'm actually serious: I'm considering trying to cook one or two squirrels that I catch, mainly because I feel a bit guilty about just dispatching and tossing them, but also because I've read several places that they are delicious free meat, when cooked properly. There's even a recipe for cider braised squirrel in Bon Appétit's website. The challenge I have is, so far, I've dispatched the ones I've caught with the trap this guy uses by drowning them, and I don't think that would be great if one plans on cleaning and eating them. I mustn't discharge a firearm in my neighborhood, so popping them with a .22 is out of the question. These electronic traps you describe may be just what I'm looking for! All the better if it partially cooks them in the process. 😉

@@migbham1 One of my neighbors gives me venison on a regular basis, so I have no interest in eating squirrels. My wife wont even eat the deer meat, so squirrels are definitely not an option for us. I use a tropical fish tank to dispose of squirrels as humanely as I can. I take no joy in killing gods' critters but squirrels are too destructive to allow them to remain on our property. We have an oak tree, a vegetable garden and bird feeders that all attract squirrels, so I can't just ignore their presence.
@migbham12 жыл бұрын
@@ccdogpark Same here. I use a large rubber tub. It's humane, and one of the "approved" ways in my state. Similar to you in that I take absolutely no joy in dispatching them. I'm also the only game eater in my house. My neighbor down the street keeps a freezer in his garage full of venison, and he'll give me a tenderloin or some really good ground meat sometimes. In fact, I made an amazing Dutch oven of chili last night that was even better tonight. Squirrels, though... Something inside of my head presents a blocker at rodent meat, though I'm sure I will give it a try.
