As an owner of a 2008 Highlander hybrid I can confirm that it is an absolutely great car! right now I’m at over 200,000 miles but I’ve been saving for a new car as I am the third owner and since it’s a hybrid things are starting to go wrong. However, I cannot recommend it enough especially if you get one with lower mileage

Im 17 and bought an 05 Outback as my first car. I got it 5 months ago for 3000$ CAN and I love it. Since I live in Canada, I tend to get a lot of snow in my driveway or on the streets and I’ve never gotten stuck or spun out. I highly recommend it

That was a great buy back then. I wish we still had a few low miles 2005's around. Did she survive on you? Always loved the feel on that car. It was like an acura tl 1998 wagon. God I miss the golden era of japenese brands. Late 90's limited models were just something else. Butter smooth steerings and transmission. Frameless doors. Real leathers. You just merged with them forgetting about the mechanics.

I've got 240,000 miles on my 08 Highlander and have spent very little on maintenance. It's not a thrilling ride, but its AWD system gets us from point A to B and it's one super reliable car.

Got to call BS here - a Pilot or a Highlander (and to a slightly lesser extent the Outback) with less than 100K miles is going to cost 20 to 25k, with 100k to 200k miles you're going to pay 15 to 20k dollars, for 200k plus miles you can get into the 10 to 15K dollars range, and for 5k dollars they are non-existent or need major repairs and super high over the hill mileage. So let's keep it real shall we? The rest of the vehicles mentioned have relatively similar pricing- the three I mentioned just being the most extreme examples. Good teaser headline though!

A great alternative for the pilot is the Saturn VUE because it’s basically the same car but way cheaper. The Saturn comes with a Honda 3.5 V6 engine

Idk I found a bugeye WRX wagon for 4k and it is super reliable and crazy fun to drive. Needs some body work but other than that it is beautiful. Lol its also stage 2+ and is absolutely brutal when you put your foot down and shift right. The lady thought it was broken because it makes noise when you turn the wheel all the way and the shifter has a lot of play. I put a new CV axel in it ($120) a new bushing joint ($56) and it is beautiful now.

My 2004 Honda Pilot has 330,000 plus on 'er and shows no signs of stopping. Only repairs besides maintenance have been a starter and an alternator. Period. Crazy. I feel obligated to get to half a million on original drivetrain...then see how much further. I love this suv. It is fast too.

I've really got my eyes on a Chevy Astro AWD for next year. It could make a great overlanding vehicle and you can find them pretty easily in the northwest for 3-5k in very good condition.

I have an 05 subaru forester xt and gawd Damme I love it....lifted 2 inches, great gas mileage. If I need a parts, all I need to do is go to the junkyard and get it off lol....id recommend 110% but just remember...the ej255 turbod engines need more maintenance and kept up...thats what fails the ej engines

6 months ago I bought a 2001 Subaru Forester L. BEST VEHICLE EVER. While it's older I found it with only 119k, 1 owner, no accidents, mint condition interior, timing belt already done, new set of front brakes n rotors, plugs & wires, battery and fresh oil change. Out the door after tax, just under $4,400. Best purchase I've ever made. It doesn't have ne 2021 technology, but it has the simple 4 speed auto n none of the new traction control auto braking crap. 6 inches of snow?, put your foot down and let those 4 wheels do their job. For its size it does well on gas. Handles like a sedan. N let me tell you, after a fun New England winters of sliding around, this thing is a tank. What would easily put a dent in a 2010 or newer car, barely touches this thing. Tis but a scratch. These cars will easily reach 300,000 miles with simple but consistent upkeep n 400k or more with meticulous maintenance. Highly highly recommend grabbing one if you find it in good to great condition.

Only problem with the highlander is the transmission. A Camry transmission works well, in a Camry. Put a few tons of metal and plastic extra on top of that and all of a sudden you have a platform bearing weight it wasn't suppose to, putting tons of strain on it.

you kinda wrong here... toyota hybrid batteries are pretty good if you know how to use it and previous owner didn't mess with it, replacing it doesn't cost much, depending on which brand and model you buying it for, i.e. Prius battery $1200, Highlander up to $2000. Not that much if you consider that battery that was taken care and in great shape can go up to 200k miles. Also, wiring isn't that complex if you research more about hybrid, it is simple and easy. Even full battery EVs aren't that complex. Honestly, if you afraid of something going wrong with any car you shouldn't look into 100k mile $5000 cars... buy new with warranty

Older Subaru headgaskets last 100-150k before costly rebuild. Timing chains a problem on interference motors. Newer ones have overcome headgasket issues. How do I know? I've owned 5 since new.
