Thank you for the very good information, I use my hubby for my constructive criticism, but have learnt something new , after reading your things you didn't know . x

Yay. We’re always learning aren’t we! I have a son who has a good eye and notices things I seem to miss! My husband tends to mostly encourage which is nice too. 😁

I am so glad I subscribed. Your words hit home with me. I have painted quite a bit since I started about 6 years ago at age 60 after never had any interest in art whatsoever. Now painting is all I want to do but I am embarrassed by my artwork and think few are good enough. I will take your advice. By the way, I know people with art degrees that are not working as artists, and I'm a retired RN and flower gardener aspiring artist. Go figure. I think you are brilliant. It is quite obvious. Best wishes always.

Well, I learnt something. I did know of the rule of thirds BUT what I have never heard about was using the diagonal for a secondary focal point :)

Thank you. I felt good listening to your words. I am a newbie and have a long way to go . Fingers crossed 🤞 Each time when I start a new painting I have a fear of failure when I still know it's a learning journey.

If you can develop a fear of giving up that would help. There is a saying. If you don’t give up you cannot fail. It helped me after a year long avoidance of the whole yet another series of “failures”. I believe its said the greats see a failing in everything they produce anyway so it just kinda comes with the territory doesnt it. I daily say the fear doesn’t belong front and center. Yes its there but the trying is the star. I applaud the artists just doing it even if I don’t care for their style or while I’m green with envy because they are simply doing it.

@@cynthiamarston2208 Thank you! I agree that fear and anxiety terrible masters. Every single painting has mistakes (failure) in it, and every completed painting is too, even after fixes. When I was starting I prayed a lot about what to do next!

Good remarks. I'm trying to develop artistic skill with photogrammetry--as a trained scientist. I'm in the gray area between art and science, and the purists don't seem to like what I'm doing (Dave--VRA FAM)

I never heard of photogrammetry. Art of art though and the new will come. I know AI is really hard on a lot of artists including and maybe especially writers.

Well copying for two years and someone telling me I have to sounds like hell! A couple copy this and that here and there is definitely great learning and it makes it seem more easy too! I do portraiture mostly and I don’t even like checking color of the subject so long as I have likeness. I actually don’t like the color nude

It does sound terribly boring to me too. I guess it did instill some self discipline, needed if painting is your only way of putting bread on the table.

@@thewatercolorclassroom-bec7040 ahh yes. Putting bread on the table. A very small percentage of artists manage that. I applaud you!

Hmmm. As a lifelong artist and teacher, I don’t think I ever heard anyone say it’s better to be self taught.

Wow! I haven’t heard it from people in my classes, but I’ve heard it in art groups that I’m a member of , and online a lot. I’m glad to hear it’s not universal!
