(Latvian here) Alright, to everyone saying that he's completely wrong, stop it because he isn't. • A lot of older Latvians find *some* Russians ignorant because they refuse to learn LV. Nothing against the ones who embrase our culture though • We do love nature, and we have some very old (yet beautiful) traditions. • That coming empty handed thing is very correct, it's normally seen as quite impolite. You don't have to bring anything grand, you can just bring some alcohol, salad or chocolates ° But, I'm pretty sure "ardievas" is Lithuanian, so just say "atā/ čau" for an informal goodbye, or "uz redzēšanos" for a more polite alternative. Just to prove my point that Latvians love nature, My extended family lives in a wooden house that their grandpa built over 120 years ago. It is one of the coziest things, and feels slightly out of place in central Riga.

#1 Don't mention the Russians! - In a country (Latvia) where Russians are 1/3 the population -1/5 of the total population is Orthodox Christian. -40% of the population speak Russian at home. Here are perhaps more fitting #1 topics. Don't ask about 1934-1941, this time does not exist in Latvia. Only «Homo Sovieticus» acknowledge this timeframe. Don't ask about 10-15% of entire population of Latvia becoming Latvian Legion volunteers. Do not ask about Liepāja - Šķēde - Priekule - Aizpute - Grobiņa. Do not ask why 200 000 died during the nazi occupation, half of who were Jewish, with horrific massacres committed by Latvian Paramilitary, volunteers, LW-Lettland and others. Do not ask about equality, democracy, personal freedom - for a country where nearly half the people speak Russian at home (40%), Latvia has only one official language, Latvia (which was the primary official language during Soviet Administration). Latvia has two «recognized minority languages» - Latgalian with roughly 8% of the population being speakers, and Livonian - a dead language. There was a Russian language referendum - Latvia is a «democracy» after all. 18 February 2012 - a constitutional referendum on whether to adopt Russian as a second official language. It was defeated in a «democratic» referendum - the only problem of course, as of 2015 there were still 290,660 non-citizens in Latvia, or nearly 1/5 of the population. The number was far higher during the 2012 referendum. These Latvians have no citizenship of any country, and cannot participate in the elections. This is because «Democratic, freethinking, progressive, revisionist» policy in Riga, schemed citizenship was only to be granted to persons who had been citizens of Latvia on the day of loss of independence in 1940 as well as their descendants. As a consequence, the majority of ethnic non-Latvians did not receive Latvian Citizenship. Many if not most of the non-ethnic Latvian families had been in Latvia for generations by the the time of the collapse. Soviet Latvia manufactured trains, ships, minibuses, mopeds, telephones, radios and hi-fi systems, electrical and diesel engines, textiles, furniture, clothing, bags and luggage, shoes, musical instruments, home appliances, watches, tools and equipment, aviation and agricultural equipment and long list of other goods. Soviet Latvia even had a film industry and musical records factories (LPs) too. Latvian was protected as a language, there was no transition to Cyrillic script, and Latvian was studied at every level of a students education. There were not enough people to operate the newly built factories. To maintain and expand industrial production, skilled workers were migrating from all over the Soviet Union. Latvia throughout history has never existed as a state it's own until the 20th century. One cannot excuse any crimes committed, but one can remark that Latvia as a part of the Russian Empire, and the Soviet Union was a multinational, multicultural Society. From 1941 to the liberation of Riga on 13 October 1944 - more than 150 000 Soviet Soldiers would perish in the moral imperative to liberate the city. This day marked an end of terror unleashed on ethnic and cultural minorities in the city and around the nation. Criminal gangs of nazis, paramilitary terrorist and hateful bigots were unwelcome in Riga from that day onward. Unfortunately it was not long lived, after decades of revisionism; ethnic, religious, and xenophobic rhetoric, and a decades long failure to address quite tangible racism in the county - monuments to Soldier-Liberators are seen as occupation; the monuments to the Latvian Legion, the denial of basic human rights, the manufacturing of a false history - considered normal, considered moral, ethical, right and just. Instead of acknowledging the Russians (the 150 000 000 of us who last checked, are in fact human); ask why would anyone consider visiting a country that writes 40% of it's compatriots off as traitors, agents, agitators, and generally less than? There are a great number of more appropriate #1 notes for Latvia than ignoring an incredibly rich, warm, diverse, and adventuresome community who's contribution to society for the last millenniums - irreplaceable and indispensable. Hundreds of thousands of Latvians oppose the radical nationalism in Saeima, and they are supposed by a great majority - including the tens of thousands denied their basic rights under Riga's «democratic» feudalist caste system/ethno-nationalist shame.

In 1940, the Soviet regime occupied Latvia. This year was named the Scary Year. It is not surprising that the German occupiers were welcomed as liberators - no one at that time realized that Hitler and Stalin were the same.
@elitaviksna49853 ай бұрын
Also, everything else you say is an interpretation of historical facts. Be that as it may, Russia/USSR signed an agreement in 1922 in which it acknowledged that it had no territorial claims against Latvia and broke this agreement in 1940. Thousands of Latvian residents were exterminated or deported, colonists from Russia were brought in their place. If in 1918 5% of Russians lived here, then in 1989 - already 49%. Currently, there are about 23% Russians. In the age group 0-15 - 12%.
