Videos like these are extremely helpful especially when you aren’t able to have private lessons, or because when your with a band teacher in schools they usually play one instrument better than the others and sometimes can’t teach other instruments as well

Or, (as of my school) your band teacher pays attention to the other instruments more then flute, therefore you don’t get to learn as much

Should I quit? I kind of want to not quite because I want to challenge myself and play an instrument, I would play the piano but that’s out of my control.

Thanks for this series! I couldn't help but noticing that you doN't have any chin or lip acne at all from playing flute. You are so lucky. Do you have any tips? Any advice would be so much appreciated as I'm struggling with this.
@TheFlutePractice3 ай бұрын
Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear that. This is a little late but will offer some tips. Do you use makeup on your chin? That can interact with the metal of the flute or react to being covered by the flute for extended periods of time. So first tip would be to see what happens without any. If, like me, you don’t wear any makeup there, then you may want to be extra careful that your lip plate is always clean. I would also suggest making sure your chin is clean before and after playing. I don’t know if it will help prevent it, as acne is complicated and not just as simple as having blocked pours, but it certainly contributes to it. Does it cause you pain when you play? On a side note, I used to have VERY bad skin in high school. I don’t struggle any more but I cannot say there is a particular reason except the medication I took in high school. I don’t use many products on my skin anymore so cannot recommend any except to advise you to figure out what works for you! Good luck luck!

Hey! Thanks for the tips! Do you have any tricks to stop salivating? I dunno if it’s common for any other flutists, but I’ll start to play fast or generally high octave notes and I start spitting which ruins the note completely.
@TheFlutePractice2 жыл бұрын
I find that very often, the increase in saliva is connected to excessive tension. Or sounds like it may be the case, especially because it is happening in the high register and when playing fast as you probably get a bit more tense. Work on release your embouchure and see if that helps!
@kwingle2 жыл бұрын

Do u have any tips for buzzing lips? I always buzz my lips when playing the higher register like D5 and up…I’m learning flute and recently changed frm clarinet after 5.5 years.
@TheFlutePractice3 ай бұрын
My guess is that you are tightening the corners of your embouchure too much. This means you are treating them like a double read that buzz rather than allowing them to shape and direct the air. Soften the cheeks, release the corners and see what happens!

I can’t seem to sing and play. Is this too much tension or something else
@ronrobbins27372 жыл бұрын
Hi, and thanks for this great helpful video! As for singing and playing, have you tried Ian Mullin's spin on this where he doesn't hum the same pitch, but "growls" his lowest possible one while playing our middle B on the staff. When you do it right you are producing a new distorted sound, and not any distinct note at all. The improvement effect on tone quality can be shocking.
@TheFlutePractice2 жыл бұрын
Ooo! Will check this out. Sounds livery interesting!

@@TheFlutePractice awesome, haven’t found his tutorial on that recently but hopefully it’s still on KZbin. He does a great demo of his method and it really is on another level regarding the humming exercise!

Love your videos! I have one question that I cannot seem to find an answer to anywhere. Does a perma-frown affect one's embouchure? I have been playing flute for many years to a very high level. I've noticed that my tone has been diminishing ever since I noticed a perma-frown developing. Throughout my the years of my playing flute, I have never had issues with flexibility but now I am having a hard time playing in the 2nd octave (let alone the 3rd octave). I am able to play these registers after a long session of long tones and harmonics along with doing some weird facial contortions. I am assuming it is all related to my perma-frown. Any help is greatly appreciated! 😀
@kerrib14743 жыл бұрын
What is a perma frown? I’m in my late 50s and I’m Not quite sure. Maybe it is a problem also for me not I’m not aware of the cause. I’m having some tone issues also
