Learning Vietnamese for foreigners in the northern accent is extremely difficult. I recommend that foreigners learn the southern Vietnamese accent so it's a lot easier, shorter and as long as people understand you that's all it matters when it comes to languages and especially Vietnamese. All Vietnamese accents have equal share of bad sounds and none of them is standard even though the government tries to convince people that the northern accent is correct but actually the northern accent sounds too feminine and too dragged and quite terrible to learn to me as a Vietnamese who can speak the language in at least 3 main accents. I am not saying southern accent is the best; however, southern accent is very popular, and very easy to learn than northern. The northern accent that is more correct is spoken by those who came to the south during the 50s because they speak with the original Hanoi accent, but they balance the bad sounds with the good ones of the central and the south so their accent is really refined and easily understood.

any good resources to compare with modern vs ."original" Hanoi accent?

OMG, I try so hard but, according to you, I say Hello Ghost or Hello tomb to my older ladies I see every day🥺. I really understand your explanations! Caveat, I have sent most of my time in Hue. So there is THAT too😊😊I know you will get that🙃

Hue accent is so beautiful but so hard to understand at the same time in my opinion haha. In this video we focus on the standard Vietnamese (from Hanoi, the capital) We will work on tones from different parts of the country as well. Thanks for the idea!

I agree with you. I would rather learn the standards, then make my way back to... Hue accent❤️😁

Hi! great lesson! I was wondering how vietnamese people sing in vietnamese. Does the tones rules stil the same or does it changes?
@LetsSpeakVietnamese3 жыл бұрын
It does change a little bit if you sing it fast. If you are planning to learn Vietnamese through a song, try slow one first
@jrod5069 Жыл бұрын
as it sounds funny, but most Vietnamese when they sing, they sing in the northern accent. And the tone doesn't matter much because Vietnamese voice doesn't fit very well with Western instrument so the words have to be bent a little bit unless you play the traditional Vietnamese instrument.

Mandarin Chinese is a cakewalk compared to this.

I don’t want an an abusive, wicked obscenity in a learning video. Cut that audio

For me it is a humorous reminder that using the wrong accent can have unintended consequences.

This is not a good explanation …

why not? Otherwise you're just complaining for no reason
