The Charleston. Where is it coming from and why is it called this way?
The Charleston dance had possibly the greatest influence on the American culture. Enslaved Africans brought it from Kongo to Charleston, South Carolina, as the Juba dance, which then slowly evolved into what is now known as Charleston. / ../ In African, however, the dance is called Juba or the Djouba. The name Charleston was given to the Juba dance by European Americans Africanisms in American Culture, p.52
The craze of the 20’s went into full swing when the choreographer Elida Webb Dawson, African- American dancer and choreographer at the Cotton Club in Harlem, introduced the Charleston in Runnin’ Wild (1923) - an American black Broadway musical ....

My online school has 300+ classes like this, with 18+ hours of material and the largest online solo dance community in the world. Please take a look, and improve your dancing today
Everything you've ever wanted to know about the King Charleston step. Learn 6 basic versions of footwork: groove walk, kicks, swinging kicks, 20’s twist, 20’s glide, and afro version “reverse twist” Charleston. You will have short practices to music right after my explanations. And as always, you’ll find tips on body movement (opposition, posture & arms) to not only feel good dancing it, but look good too!
This dance step is really the King its brilliantly universal. You can see and use it in salsa, rumba, house, hip hop, cutting shapes, shuffle, jazz, swing, and many more styles, believe me. It all depends on which bounce and feel you put into it. In this video we work on swing feel.
Learn these 6 basic options and you will shine!

I’ve never seen anyone move their body with the flow and grace that you can achieve. It’s even evident when you’re demonstrating these moves. I’ve never really been interested in dancing but I saw you in a video posted on reddit (Teachers battle outro) and was mesmerised by the speed and fluency in your movement. Fascinating, and so pleasing visually. Bravo.

During Ragtime era, (1840s music started, but became popular 1900s to 1920) thebmain dances were Ragtime 1 step 2 step, waltz,.AND the hilarious Animal Dances--- Turkey Trot, Grizzly Beat Hug, Fox Trot, Fish, Wallaby Jump, etc---even Kangaroo Hop. Hopefully these are on youtube. These are the most humorous dances in the world of dance!! They preceded Charleston by a decade and probably transmitted its energy and attitude.

You're so wonderful, stay groovy !!!
