I once made a Duna rover that literally could not flip over, I kept trying. I accomplished this by giving it a "turtle shell" on top that when it tried to turn over, it wouldn't be able to.

For long distance driving on Kerbin I use the Wheeseley with medium aircraft landing gear. The wheels have great travel and no speed restrictions, use wings for downforce.

tip: have a large reaction wheel or multiple reaction wheels and have all set to 100% force. have an action group to toggle these reaction wheels when you need them, I usually put this action group on 1-4 so i can reach it with same hand as i use for wasd keys. whenever you are driving forward, you can disable reaction wheels, but whenever you are either turning at high speeds or need more control, you can toggle reaction wheels to always have control of your rover. If you also use the second largest wheels, the wheels have an impact tolerance of 100 m/s, so basically you can survive any fall of below 100 m/s as long as you align wheels with ground properly where all wheels make contact with ground at same time. I managed to get to 50-60 m/s with a rover on duna with very good levels of control.

Cant believe he didn't mention this. This is the biggest step to getting rovers to not feel like shit.

Or set control mode on the reaction wheels to SAS only, and turn on SAS when you need it

Better is to map driving to IJKL, so that you can still use Reaction Wheels manually. That way, drive forward doesn't lurch forward.

Top heavy rovers can perfectly well be drifted like a maniac. I have drifted the stock crater crawler in rough terrain with minor adjustments. You just need to set friction control to something much lower or possibly have an outer pair of low friction anti-roll wheels or landing gears. Right, that way if your rover ever starts to roll up on one side traction is immediately cut to near zero to avoid falling over. Setting rear wheel steering also helps here as it counters body roll. Setting really severe rear wheel steering using robotics can allow even crazier stuff.

I would say reaction wheels can fix a more problems than just airtime. If you make RWs an action group, you can turn it on when you are about to turn. It will make it a LOT easier. I managed to make a rover that can fit in the Mark 3 cargo bays but it can reliably cruise at 40m/s (On the Mun, could drive on Ike or Dres. Don't use on Minmus or Gilly). I took it on several trips, one time i drove over 100 kilometers in 30 minutes. Didn't flip a single time.

Maybe this is overkill or just being new to ksp, but I put the single direction RCS thruster on the 4 corners of the rovers to keep them grounded

thanks! now my rover doesnt freak out sometimes and slides like its in a drift match or something like that.

1) spend hours building a rover that does not look bad, has science instruments and fit in your rocket. 2) Drive the rover for 5 minutes, realize how slow, frustrating and boring they are. 3) Find this video

Anybody else use solar panels as wings? Extend those suckers and watch your top heavy rover turn into a beautiful fiery butterfly… I’m now on Buug Mk.III and have successfully sent back research from Mun. Once I remembered to give my probe a comms unit anyways
