It's completely okay to monetize your videos. People should not be angry about coca-cola or pepsi (oh, perpetual holy war), or other brands. You give them a lot of very useful videos for free and it is definitely fine to gain some money from sponsors.

Hi Lucy, I just watched your video about translating in the head when speaking a foreign language. You’re absolutely right! I figured it out some 40 years ago, when I migrated from my native Poland to Germany. I needed to become fluent in German as soon as possible, and I came to the same idea, that translating just won’t work. I started to memorise the names of things without translating into polish, and it worked just fine. I did the same after I migrated to New Zealand over 30 years ago, and have the same success. Congratulations on your method. Thomas from Antipodes

I’ve been thinking a lot about this subject since I started learning Spanish several years ago. I think it is safe to say that you stop translating in your head once a word becomes familiar. For example, if I hear ‘perro’ or ‘casa’, I automatically visualise what they are because they are two of the first words I learnt and are used very often. It is like if a new word enters your own language then you eventually become familiar with it and don’t need to keep referring to other words for what it is. Dog, hound, mutt, perro mean much the same to me now as do house, home and casa.

I understand what you say, but i have to do more practice in conversation. What you said is true for me. I learned the grammar in my school. Now after many times i listen video only in english without subtitle, i understand more the conversation and where i don't understand i put the word in the context. But, i learn a bit Spanish for myself only seeing videos and trying to comments in that language and in some moments i think in that language. I think that the similarity of some language (italian, spanish) help to learn more fast.

This English lesson is great because I do speak out loud always when I'm in the car going to work or from work going back to the house. Oftentimes I talk to myself in English while in the car, and it's true that I could sometime hear my errors in English but it was quite okay. I do talking most of the time when I'm alone inside the car as part of my every day training in English. Thanks!

When the sentences you're trying to compose become more complex, a quick translation is not a bad idea; that is, when you know how to do it. Learning Latin, an extinct language having a totally different word order than Polish, I figured out how to treat sentences as a whole, separate entity. Once you've found the main verb you're safe and sound. :) The same rule applies to instant translations made while I'm speaking English. Of course, thinking in English works perfectly... but when it comes to saying more complicated phrases sometimes you have to spend a while to express yourself the way you want to. 2. Your Spanish accent is absolutely adorable!

Hello lucy, a little more than 3 years later, 17th of July 2020, it was 25 degrees here in Gdansk, Poland. I am a native Dutch speaker and to tell you the truth I can't remember when I was not thinking in English. I have the same in German. I've worked in England, been in US, Canada and Australia. But I think British and American movies and tv series have helped a lot and also music. With German it was similar, as a toodler I already watched German television (we lived in the East of the Netherlands, close to the German border. And was in Germany alot. And later in Austria for wintersports). But as said, I don't remember how it started and what I did for it, I guess it came naturally.

Well... quite interesting, of course not a new idea (my old english teacher back in the days of secondary school, adviced us of most of this tips), but surely useful to increase my listening skills during your lecture you so nicely gives us; aside that, in the jungle of all the youtube english teachers out here, you a lot cuter and likeable to see and listen, so thanks a lot Lucy.

1. When you talk with us about temperature, do you use Fahrenheit or Celsius? 2. Watching movies with English subtitles worked wonders for me.

as an English teacher, i would like to add that you should read in the target language. you can start with simple fairy tales you already know in your mother tounge. after that, you can move on to a harder one and so on.

Lucy, it is difficult not to translate while acquiring a new language. Once a person acquires a conversational level of the language skill, the translation stops. Also, once you acquire a second language, when working on your third, the translation will not happen, reason why you no longer translate now that you are acquiring Italian. I know from personal experience.
