After 6 weeks on the road in Europe and covering more than 3500 miles, we reflect on some of the essential items we really could not have lived without. In this video we take you through some of the things that made our time on the road so much easier...and most of them didn't cost the earth!
We are Richard and Jackie and we live in the UK. We retired from teaching at the age of 51 in the summer of 2022. Our plans for early requirement include relocating to the Yorkshire Dales, developing our forever home and travelling the UK, Europe and eventually the world in our VW campervan Nelson.

Hi from Sweden. Maybe it is because I am single, maybe it is not. I really expected both of you to mention good companionship, being able to travel together, both liking to visit the new countries, and being such a great team. Take care for each other.

Some of the best things I have in my self built campervan are small and didn't cost much. My favs are my Sea to Summit Delta plates and bowls, very light and fit inside each other, also the Alpha cutlery as it doesn't rattle. A small bamboo chopping board just big enough for a couple of slices of bread, just right for making sandwiches. My mini 600W kettle just the right size for 2 large mugs of tea and of course the Ridge Monkey - great for toasties, heating up pies and croissants etc

Hi Linz- thanks for the comment. We are just discovering the versatility of the ridge monkey after 6 years of campervan life😂 We love our toasties on the road. I know a lot of MH's swear by electric kettles, but we are still on LPG and a stove top kettle...which in winter is fab because making a morning coffee has the added benefit of warming the van. Have a good one.👍

@@earlyretirementwanderlust I had a portable gas burner and stove top kettle originally - as you say great when its cold to warm the van too, but not so good when its hot, which is one reason I got the little kettle. Another plus of an electric kettle is not having to wait for it to cool to put it away. I've now got the Vango Sizzle portable Induction hob, so I can use it in or outside the van - only negative is I can't use the Ridge Monkey on it a😞

I thought I invented the string bag and hook hack for fruit and veg! I like the option of using the supermarket veg bags. I highly recommend packing cubes. You could get a different coloured set each, so you know who's is who's. I also love my folding camping toaster - the one with the little holes. I've tried them all, and thought that was the best one. I've just invested in a BOXIO separator toilet and LOVE it. It fits at the bottom of my bed when it's down, and during the day it doubles as a footstool or a seat (with a cushion on top).

Hi Thanks for watching 😊 I've not seen camping toasters before - I will have a look! We have survived the last 6 years with out a toilet on board but when we swap the van in a couple of years we will get one with on board facilities as it will open up more camping spots to us. (I do have a bucket for emergencies!) Happy travels 🚐

Some good ideas there. We like the ideas of hooks to hang up fruit and veg and a linen bag for used clothes. We also like our fresh morning coffee and used to use a cafeteria, but washing up and disposal of used coffee grains always caused a problem. We have now switched to an individual coffee cone ( dripper I think Americans call it) on each cup with a filter paper that can be thrown away with the coffee grains. The cones are collapsible silicon that fold flat . We got this idea from a neighbouring van on a french aire a few years ago. Backpackers use them because they are light and easy to pack. I always grind my coffee beans at home, but on our travels I take fairtrade columbian ready ground. Phil

Thanks for this Phil. We agree- the cafeteria is a right pain to clean- we have to be really careful at home as we are on a septic tank system😳 We love using our dripper- I was gifted one as part of my retirement gifts from colleges. As you say, it makes the clean up so much easier. Glad that someone puts as much thought into their coffee as we do with ours👍

Thank you. Interesting video. Our 12 are different to your 12 - each to their own. 1 Levelling ramps. 2 Tools for on-road repairs, including an OBD (onboard diagnostics). 3.Small rechargable air pump (for the tyres). 4 Small fan heater (we use campsites and hook up). We have a van diesel heater but when on hook up, you need to get your monies worth! 5 Electric hob with the extension cable to cook outside the van. 6 Cool bag for bread, crisps, fruit & Veg. 7 Torches (recharable). 8 Sandmats/tow rope (even though we are 4 wheel drive), ie, belt and braces. 9 Bivvy loo for extreme emergencies! 10 Small mosquito zapping lamp. 11Outside mat same as you. 12 Small camping stove and gas bottles (we ran out of gas in Spain and the 907 bottle is impossible to find.

I had to smile at the sand mats which we really should get - we had a nightmare near Biarritz when we drove across a forest carpark and straight into a hidden sand pit just off the road - it was a very stressful 2 hours 😬 We also need to add a torch as we do a lot of winter trips and it gets very dark very quickly - although we do always have head torches in the front.

We have the same awning in olive green, fits our big Transit so good for all size vans. An identical yellow string bag just hangs from the headrest for veg and fruit. Our grocery drawers are on the opposite side to the fridge, the plates and cutlery get quite hot above the fridge! I collect the little cotton bags often given as giveaways, perfect for fresh bread storage home and away. I'm definitely going to try the basil plant idea. Perhaps coriander too. Still not bothered by outside cooking, our hob overlaps the step so is basically outdoors if the door is open. We have an oven and use it a lot. Just acquired a Bialetti Stove top coffee maker, no papers required and just buy ready ground coffee. I crocheted a cheery bright stripy blanket that has multiple uses, it covers the double passenger seat also used as dining area. then it can be an extra layer over the duvet at night if cold. It also goes outside as a picnic blanket in nicer weather. Great selection again.

We have the same Cadac but we lug a separate gas bottle around so it is less convenient and we find it a faff to clean after use. I am just setting up a smaller gas bottle to see if we fall back in love with it, hopefully we do. I think for us the Ridge Monkey Sandwich Toaster pan is absolutely brilliant, we use it for all sorts of dishes not just toasties. We also have one of the small square gas stoves and like you tend to cook outside when we can, we feel the same about cooking smells and mess in the van and of course nice to be outside after all that’s one of the reasons we have our van is to be outside. One thing that I am going to have to develop is some form of insulating the tailgate in the really cold weather as we tend to get a lot of condensation forms on the rear window and also on the painted exposed metal around the window, the condensation runs inside the tailgate and collects in the bottom of the tailgate. Im thinking some way of completely sealing the exposed metal and glass from the warm air. We just have the curtains that are stretched between two tracks at the moment.
@earlyretirementwanderlust
@earlyretirementwanderlust 2 ай бұрын
Yes I do agree the cadac can be a pain to clean at times and we have learnt that the griddle plate and BBQ sauce is not a good combination. We tend to use the not stick hot plate for most things as it is easy to clean and doesn't leak fat onto the lower area. I also agree about the tailgate insulation. To be fair we do not notice it most of the year but when it is cold in winter the condensation is very noticeable and in Les Arcs skiing we woke up to ice a few times!!! We did have an issue skiing for 7 weeks that the condensation made the carpeted panel wet and filled up at the bottom - it took a while to dry it out when we got home. Hope you find a solution and let us know - we have a van shade blind there which is pretty good for insulation.

Morning Craig- we used the Fabsil tent reproofing kit that comes with everything you need to reproof the canvas. It works really well, the hardest thing being getting high enough to reach the top of the pop-top over the van bonnet. We applied the solution with a paint brush rather than using a spray as it kept things a bit tidier and more precise. We could not believe how it stopped the canvas wetting out- particularly in driving rain. I tried to pop a link in this comment but KZbin messed up the format so we have added it to our Amazon shop if you want to take a look? Thanks for the comment. Have a good one. 👍

Hello from Australia. We have been watching you from the start and we have noted you don't have a toilet on board. So personal question, when not staying at a camp site do you have a little porta potti? I only ask cos it'.s getting harder to free camp here without having a toilet system on board. We love all your content.

Hi Jenni, we still rely heavily on public loos and the loos of facilities we use like cafes, pubs, etc. In the UK and Europe, we are quite well covered for public loos as we don't have too many genuine wilderness areas, unlike you guys in Austria. We do have an emergency bucket...and our next van will have an onboard loo as it will open up more of the Aires in Europe that we cannot currently use. Hope that this helps? 👍

I have recently bought a BOXIA separator toilet and LOVE it! It stays in the van, doubles as a footstool or a seat (with a cushion on top). It fits at the bottom of my bed when it's down at night. They are from Germany, hopefully they are marketed in Australia?

What was the issue with the Leisure Battery and the Fridge. We are finding that our Fridge goes into a safe mode after 2 days of Off Grid use

Hi, our battery bank had basically run its course and was no longer holding charge. The batteries had reached their maximum number of charges over the last 3 years. This does happen and they are something we know need to be replaced periodically. When we put the new batteries in, they held charge so much better (as you would expect), and our solar system has kept them topped up over our summer travels. The batteries once again cope with the demands of the fridge. Hope this makes sense? I am no engineer😂 R

The closest we have ever got is the 2 night ferry from Portsmouth to Santander which we enjoyed but that was long enough for us as we like to get out more exploring and hiking 🥾🚐
