I'm 50 years old, and growing up I never heard my parents and the other older generation say "ib niam txiv"; it's always "ib khub niam txiv", "ib khub txij nkawm", etc....IMO, I think the "ib niam txiv" is either a lazy way of saying "ib khub niam txiv" OR the person doesn't know proper Hmong. Maybe the elders should be consulted on this? I've heard plenty of mis-spoken Hmong (both words and phrases) by the younger generation so I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case here.

It's true that we are all entitled to our opinions and expressions, but misusing words and expressions can make us sound uninformed/uneducated. This is true with all languages.

A couple=two people. The word "couple" means 2, like the word "nkawm" means 2. Ib nkawm khau means a pair of shoes, or 2 shoes (left foot, right foot). Stop saying 'ib niam txiv". It is grammatically incorrect in Hmong. Hmong keep saying "ob niam txiv" for short, but to be grammatically correct, it's really "ob leeg niam txiv", just like if theres two dogs, "ob tug aub", or two birds, "ob tus noog." That's why Hmong would never say ib niam txiv, because its really "ob leeg niam txiv" or "ib nkawm niam txiv". The word "nkawm" means 2 already, hence its the same as "a couple" or "a pair" of shoes. If ypu say "ib niam txiv", its not correct: you can't say "ib leej niam txiv" since there are 2 people. To test it, think of 1 husband but with 2 wives. Then what do you say? In this situation there's 3 people now, not a couple. Now, to be grammatically correct, you'll have to say "peb niam txiv". You can no longer use the word "nkawm" here bc its now 3 people. So, really, you'll have to say "3 leej niam txiv" or "peb niam txiv" for short. If the man has 3 wives, you now have to say, "plaub niam txiv" or "plaub leeg niam txiv." Similarly, if its a father and two sons in the group, you have to say "peb txiv tub" because theres 3 of them, or "peb leeg txiv tub". When you put the classifier "leeg" in there, you know youll have to use "ob" for "ob leeg" and "peb" for "peb leeg" etc...you would never say "ib txiv tub" because you can never say "ib leeg txiv tub". When you use "ib" to dezcribe 2 peoole, a pair, a couple, it always, always has to be accompanied by the word "nkawm". Hence, "ib nkawm niam txiv" is correct, but never just say "ib niam txiv" for a couple because the grammatically correct expression is "ob leeg niam txiv."
