Hey my lovelies
It’s been a good couple of days since my last video but now you know why 😂.
Our trusty green monster 40ft trailer finally started to ahoy some signs of needing maintenance. Initially, we thought it was only in need of aome new seals, but things quickly spiraled after a closer inspection of each axle.
Feeling great about the whole trailer. We have had it for 3 years and not had to do much so this was long overdue. My favorite thing about trailers is how low cost maintenace can be when things are addessed before they fall apart and leave you stranded on the highway. This entire refresh cost less than $160 - and took about a day and a half to complete with filming. How awesome is that?
It’s like brand new…… now we are ready to head home.
Hope you enjoyed
- Holls

In 1981 VIN’s were changed to 17 digits long. If you are reading the VIN from the door jamb or the dashboard and it is less than 17 digits it’s pre 1981. You need to check the frame also. There were never complete VIN’s on the frame but the last 5 digits should match.

Here's a tip that will save you time, damaged parts, and some scuffed knuckles in the future: When using "adjustable" pliers, like the Channel Locks that you used to unscrew the caps on the hubs - always orient the tool so that you are pulling against the fixed, immovable jaw. It will give you a much more solid "bite" on whatever you are pulling on. Same as how a pipe wrench works. If the description isn't clear, go back and watch the video at about 5:30 - The handles are pointed downward, the fixed jaw is on top, and the movable jaw is on the bottom. In that configuration, pulling on the handle with any pressure will try to force the jaws open. If you flip is so that the handles are up and the fixed jaw is at the bottom, pulling on the handles will *increase* the grip pressure. I know that this is a low-torque application & it probably doesn't make a difference in this case, but good habits are called good habits for a reason!

Check the axles for being bent. In the two years I’ve owned my fifth wheel and have drug it around the desert southwest and taken it on trails that I shouldn’t have. I was wearing through tires really fast and scrubbing the edges. I’ve replaced the rear axle and you could see the bend behind the stub shaft. Now the front axle is doing the same thing, just not as fast so I’ll be changing it. Plan to spend more time and be sure everything is square.

Little bit of practical info, when a brake shoe becomes wet from lube, the lube does something called saturation into the pores, spraying off the surface gets the lube off what you can see, but the porosity of the lining will still have lube in it. What happens when the shoe gets hot from moderate to heavy braking? The oil that has saturated into the deeper pores expands, and does something similar to what water does in concrete when it freezes, it causes fractures, cracks, and surface chunks to pop off. It is always a best practice to replace shoes that have become wet from lube.

GM made that body style truck from 73 to 87, they continued the Blazer/Suburban in that body to 91. That grill/headlight combo is 88 to 91 so from a Blazer, the front fenders have a horizontal clearance light which is 81 and newer. The hood is also 81+, the hood hinges and the way the hood matches the cab at the cowl don't fit an 80 or older cab without a bunch of grafting in cowl pieces and the dash shape is 81+ so I would guess that someone put a newer cab and front group on an older frame at some point and swapped VIN tags... or they just swapped VIN tags on to a newer truck... lol

As much as you haul stuff, I'd carry in the trailer or tow vehicle a couple extra sets of bearings and seals, an extra complete replacement hub and a grease gun. I'd probably also pre-pack the new bearings and vacuum seal them so that you don't have to deal with that on the side of the road. Of course maintaining the hubs would go a long ways to preventing damaged axles and hubs.

Holly; ask Eric from BSF Recovery Team about tire blowouts when they were on their way out to EJS in Utah. That red "SQUARE BODY" is in the area of 1973-1987 for the 1/2 ton pickups; as the first change in the Chevy/GMC's on the 1/2 tons started in the fall of 1987; the square bodys continued on until 1991 on the Suburbans and the 3/4 and the 1 ton pickups.

On the mystery truck it could be anything from a 1988ish cab on a 1978 frame to something in-between. Depends on the regs where the customization was done and whether a Custom Builders VIN was assigned by the DMV/Registry. When brakes drag too much or bearings are set too tight you get heat along with the potential for seal failure and blowouts. On oil bath bearings I prefer to use Assembly Oil such as the Red Permatex to better ensure there's no reaction between the pressure additives in the grease and the hub oil. Keep an eye on the heat to ensure you don't have a repeat performance due to a faulty automatic brake adjuster or an overly snug bearing. Note that after a seal failure like that you sometimes need to put a stainless steel repair sleeve over the seal area on the spindle. Best!

Today you see ChadFab putting an antique truck cab on an newer Chevy chassis, Matt putting an old International on a custom home made chassis, Rudy putting an early 60's Chevy pickup onto a late model Suburban frame, Merlin playing mix and match, etc, etc. On those you have to keep track of the individual parts swapped together afterwards when doing repairs and maintenance. I don’t typically pack grease into bearings that go into oil bath hubs. I do, however, use a light coating of grease to help with re-assembly and to avoid putting new bearings in dry. This is a long-haul, heavy load trailer for us and I would never use grease hubs for that type of application.

The grill is 88-91 Blazer/Burb/3500. I see no evidence of 1978. If it's a 78, the 6th digit of the VIN will be a 8. If its 81, the tenth digit will be a B, to 87 which is is a H. Never thought of using a pneumatic hammer to remove races. Always used a brass drift pin and a hammer to keep from damaging the inside of the hub. I use a drum brake resetting gauge to set the shoes before reinstalling the drums. It’s an H-shaped locking caliper. One end is inserted into the drum and locked to the diameter of the inside of the drum. The other end is then the exact width to set the diameter of the shoes. Quick and easy and no need to get under the vehicle or trailer to turn the star adjuster with a brake tool.

Same, I usually sit there with a brass punch and hammer them out the old fashioned way, but this worked really well! Tommy did have a brass tip for the tool, but we couldn’t find it. I’ll definitely be going this route from now on - it’s a huge time saver…but I really wouldn’t recommend anyone try it for the first time with the incorrect tip, you could do a ton of damage with a tip that is harder than the hub material 😅

If its the 24 volt system wired in series or a 12 volt system with the batteries in parallel then yes both batteries need to be the same brand, model, capacity and batch code as they are to be viewed as a matched set. With the matched set you should balance charge them first so the state of charge of both batteries is the same otherwise with one battery potentially fully charged and the other partially then when you start the truck up one will get overcharged and damaged while the alternator tries to bring the partially discharged battery up to a full charge. If its individual batteries with separate alternators or a charge isolator then you don't have to replace them as a matched set. On the newer Ford SuperDuty I believe most are set up in parallel without a charge isolator so they would have to be replaced as a matched pair and be balance charged when installed and on occasion if you notice the voltage between the two batteries start to vary. Best!

If it's a half ton truck it could be anywhere from 73-87. 3/4 or one ton up to 89 or maybe early 90 R/V as opposed to C/K platform which was redesigned in 88, leaving the heavy duties on the legacy platform for a couple years. The front clip is definitely mid to late 80s but totally interchangeable. An older vin like that may struggle through a modern vin decoder. If you have the first 10 we can break it down through factory service manuals probably.

Don't use an impact wrench when putting hubs back on. That's why your hub bearings look like they do.

Umm, I’m not sure where you saw an impact being used on the spindle nut…I only used the impact to put on and take off the wheels/tires. I used a socket and ratchet to seat the new bearings, but that’s about it.

If the axles are the original. They should have a date of make. Even the transmission.

I want to know where they found that roll bar. They used to be super popular back in the day. Got to love a square body.

You're using The Knipex Channel Locks backward. Erma Gerd! 😮😮 Whether it's a standard Alligator Pliers or Pliers Wrench, they are designed to be pushed in the direction of force which adds force to the closing action. When the pliers are pulled, the advantage is lost and the grip strength must be increased to keep the tool on the fastener.

Yeah, I seem to do that a lot with channel locks too. Gotta remember they are meant to be used one way 😅

did I miss you packing the bearings cause all I saw was you putting some light grease on em. If so they are going to fail and get ruined. They have to be packed with grease to get any life out of em and keep them cool. My bad rewatched and caught the Oil Bath Hubs. I must of been day dreaming. Nice job
