A whole video on how to drill a hole in a plastic tub and put the element in. Nothing on the really important part of how to connect the solar, how much solar to connect, how to control it with a thermostat......basically a bit fat NOTHING as far as solar water heating. Title should be: How to put a hole in a plastic tub.

I would opt to use a large igloo cooler instead, the insulation of it will help dramitically retain the heat

I agree - the standing losses of exposure to air and wind and ambient temp will almost be equal to the power heating the via the element

Is there a follow up video showing the water being heated? If not how long did it take to bring the 18Ltr container to a useable temperature say body heat temp 37 degrees? Also can you wire the solar panel direct to the element using only a switch to cut off the power. Or do you have to run off a battery via an mppt charger?
@JDAfrica Жыл бұрын
I’m looking at doing same - so was hoping ti see a result video. You can get panels that’s output 36v - and find an element that is 36v … as I read, most elements are almost identical as they use a resistive element. More voltage will heat quicker, less voltage will heat slower. Effectively you can run the element direct from the panels.

Everyone, please stop buying these DC heater elements. You don't have to spend that kind of money. I use standard120V 2000W, last ones I bought were $14 for two shipped on amazon. If you can install multiple heaters, this is the way to go. They work out to be about 7.5 ohms each and I use them on a 36V array which is about 50V at power point. I get all my hot water at the camp this way, 10 & 20 gallon tanks in series. Just direct connect to the heating element gets you an efficiency of 40% at best. Most of the day the heater resistance is not matched to the panel. I built a cheap little MPPT circuit that increases the efficiency to 97%

that's what I say. I even go as far as connecting regular 120v element to water heater and use a 10 awg extension cord as an emergency. for that matter hard wire a 240 v element to fusebox by qualified electrician if you're not a DIY. would it be up to code ? not in CA but you can get away with it if you live in the boonies. heck I'm building a rocket stove to feed hot water into my water heater. yes I live in the desert. i go to get away from rat race in the city. i've done many do-it-yourself projects experiments. relaxes the mind... for example I do have a mig welder, but at times I go old school 3rd world style LOL learned from my father 2 car batteries jumper cables and WAHAHAHAHA MAD EVIL SCIENTISTS read the fine print: "do at your own risk..." maybe that's why I'm impotent. "you say important, i say impotent, tomatoh, tomato, potato, potatoh, oysters, ersters, lets call the whole thing off" OLE!

Right,just buy about 4,000-6,000 watt inverter and use high watt elements so it will heat up your water in minutes.done !!!
@rmauersr4 жыл бұрын
Maximum energy transfer occurs when the source impedance equals the load impedance. To calculate the source impedance connect a load of variable resistance. Change the load until the open circuit voltage is reduced by half. Disconnect the load and measure the value of resistance. Use a combination of parallel and series connections of heating elements that approach the resistance value just measured.
@kenputer567 жыл бұрын
Your problem would be 245 watts -45 volt x 3 = 135 volts into 12 volt battery you better have an MPPT controller that will take 150 volt input.

Hey thanks for sharing the video, neat idea for camp water heater! In regards to your posts. What you need to do is dig a cone shape for your concrete fills. When moisture freezes in the ground it pushes the concrete up during thaw time. So each spring you’ll notice your concrete posts come up more and more. If the bottom part of your pour is wider than top, it stays down much better.

I am thinking about making myself something similar to put in my trunk. Mainly to wash my hands and face as I am in the construction business. For the summer time I wouldn't use a heater. But for the winter time, I would just to keep the water from freezing. Any thoughts?

Use a 100 watt 12 volt dc panel to power the circulator pump. Literally just hook up the panel directly to the pump and it will run when the sun is shining. Always have water in the bucket or you may do damage to the pump. Have a loop of water that feeds out of your home depot bucket thru the pump, thru the hot water solar panel and back to bucket. This is just a mini version of my solar hot water shower. You could just add a spigot onto the bottom of the bucket for washing hands and dispensing hot water. If you wanted a shower kind of thing you could get a shureflow pump and a shower head. You may find the problem is that the water gets too hot, too fast. Good luck. Let me know if I can help. Thanks for watching my video. Please let me know how your project works out. The electric hot water heater burned out. I haven't figured out what happened. yet. I think the above is a more solid plan.

I would be a bit concerned about melting the plastic without a reliable thermostatic control. I would probably also want a float switch in the mix though that would likely have to control a relay so that the unit would not heat without sufficient water. That all might not be necessary if you are going to watch it heat and it is out in the open such as camping as you suggested, but I know that I get easily distracted and could see me getting alerted to a problem by plastic smelling smoke. In theory the HDPE would not melt until it was higher than the boiling point of the water, but If you ever boiled it down unintentionally it would not be good. I would look up Hurd Solar as that guy designed a reliable controller that can be used for diversion that is dirt cheap if you can solder and put it together. That way you could have your solar charge up your batteries and switch the power to the heater element when they were full. You could also configure it as a switch to turn the heating element on only when the batteries were near full and cycle it on and off as conditions changed.

You need to single one out and plug it in to a new 300 element .. in the making of a room heater.. or heat helper .. but they make a HD solar panel for this.. so know the risk .. but this idea need to be known about and dun on you tube. 700 watt ac or dc ?? one need a DC heating element ..
