The director was afraid that it could break down during the filming and they had no spare. He decided that the awful replica should represent an "improved/experimental" tank. If this tank would break down it could be replaced much easier. Stupid decision. For the film Fury They had a second replica upper structure for the close-ups and destruction. For the destruction they added CGI tracks -road wheels

It's strange that they would spend so much effort on this but make basic mistakes. The cupola is the "mid" type, but "mid" Tigers didn't have those smoke launcher arrays at the turret front. And "mid" Tigers had their ventilator in the middle of the roof, not at the back like this replica.
