One has to admire that level of dedication and determination. The low-rider aesthetic is not what I chose for my '59 Chevy, but it would lend itself to that quite well. The problem is that a lot of car culture has its roots in CA, but CA is very anti car culture. Every vehicle you own you have to pay property tax on. You really can’t modify it without fearing that it will fail CA inspection. And they are where a lot of those “no cruising” zones came to place. I get that they wanted to reduce traffic, but at the same time, they were hurting the car culture. You now have to have sanctioned car meets like cars and coffee, where sure, you could bring something you’re proud of, but really everyone else has six figure cars and wondering why you’re taking up a valuable spot. A lot of custom car shops are located in CA, but they’re not really cars that get driven like these low riders are. What’s the point of functional art, if it never functions?

Thank you for highlighting the story - grateful for the spotlight on the culture. There is a great article written by Nili Blanck titled "Inside L.A's Lowrider Car Clubs" that's worth a read - my favorite part of the article is the snippet on "Low and Slow", that reads, "Like their white counterparts, Mexican American veterans were also purchasing cars with the money they were earning from their service in World War II. As the “hot rod” trend swept the country, which comprised mainly of vintage models like Ford Model-Ts being modernized with enlarged engines for speed, Mexican American vets, deftly employing the mechanical training they had received in the army, began to tweak their cars in their own garages as a means of distinguishing themselves both on and off the road. Tinkering with the engines, painting the exteriors and even adding weights in the back to lower the bodies, Mexican Americans were purposefully altering their cars-Chevys, which were in surplus at the time and designed with an X on the bottom that made them easy to modify were especially popular-so that, unlike the “hot and fast” hot rods, their cars would be “low and slow.”"

This story while very flattering and prideful to the Chicano community, is quite misinforming! Lowriding- DID NOT originate in New Mexico. Two cities in California have long been associated to the beginnings of Lowriding. Los Angeles and San Jose, California have had Pachucos and Lowriding since the 1940’s- they’ve been tied to the conception of such movements. Furthermore, there’s a small city in Northern California called Modesto, and they were once the Mecca of cruising, dating back to the 1950’s- hence “American Graffiti” the movie. Once again, this documentary is deserving, but I don’t think it shared the factual origins of Lowriding, in a proper manner. Additionally, the beginning of this report, failed to recognize, that Lowriding is officially a Mexican American or a Chicano culture. The documentary vaguely mentions, that Lowriding has potent or shifted towards Chicanos. While other nationalities have adopted the movement, i.e African Americans, Japanese Americans, Anglos etc. it has long been known that it’s a Chicano Culture. This has also been established with the Smithsonian National Museum, in Washington, DC. --🇲🇽 🇺🇸 ❤

Chicano culture including lowriders is not limited to starting in L.A. it’s was across the American southwest. It’s very plausible that lowriding grew simultaneously in New Mexico & L.A. just like zuit suits originating in El Paso and Juarez but later spread to L.A. L.A alone is not responsible for the Chicano culture. It’s a Southwest thing. What L.A has going for them is the population and notoriety to be seen on a bigger stage like Hollywood. So instead of hating on New Mexico show love we are raza too. The movie blood in blood out was written by a Chicano in prison from Albuquerque, New Mexico but filmed in L.A. Just like rap started in New York but L.A. made it their own style. So it is with the lowrider culture. Similar, different and unique. L.A. & New Mexico have similar yet different Chicano cultures. My love to both places.
@jag50144 күн бұрын
This could have been a much better segment but the reporter overemphasized linking lowriding to crime when it's more of an extension of broader urban Chicano culture and has existed as its own distinct car subculture for generations, like hot rodding and other scenes. I mean, on the East Coast mobsters and dealers are stereotypically into cadillacs but that doesn't mean that the two go hand in hand. At any rate lowriding is a celebration of Chicano culture, so no, it's not at all a surprise to find lowrider enthusiasts who are family and community oriented.

@jag5014 I think he was just providing context because the majority of 60 mins audience is white & old.

I'm a chicano from SoCal. I can honestly say, the riding low and slow was never for me. I can appreciate what goes into the artwork and the classic car. But for me its fast on two wheels. A lowered Vicla is cool. I don't know what it is about bikes. I do know they aren't for everyone.

Cant go wrong with a low low, i daily a 89 Cadillac Brougham and theirs no feeling like leaning back in those seats cruising enjoying the view. Its more than just driving a car, its experiencing the feel the joy, that it not only brings to me but others as well.

These cars are great. You don't have to pay for parking. You can just hop over those "severe tire damage" strips.

Surprising. Probably because they’re in the Midwest and not the Southwest.

There's a huge Mexican population there, maybe due to crime, ppl rather not build flashy cars?? What cars are built in that city n state, besides the 4x4s for the weather??

Of western states New Mexico is the poorest. It has the best food in world. New Mexican food is different than Mexican food in the rest of the west. Different chile used. New Mexico has highest % of Latinos of any state. Espanola, this town, sits at altitude. Santa Fe close by is at 7200 feet. Denver is only 5500
