One in five Australians will suffer from depression. That's frightening but it's just a statistic. The truth is, you can't really understand what it means unless you've actually had depression or watched someone you love struggling with this terrible illness. It can be a private lonely pain. After all, there's still a stigma attached to any kind of mental illness. That's one of the reasons why so few sufferers ever get proper treatment. It's also why Peter Overton has done this story. It was a very difficult, very personal journey - one that goes to the very heart of his own family.
