This session was recorded for Prestige, who were more inclined to release a looser, longer jam session than Blue Note or Riverside. The hi-fi jams led by Gene Ammons were a perfect example, and some of them included Jackie Mclean.

One of the first jazz records I owned. Good to hear it again, great solo by Curtis Fuller and a rare opportunity to hear Jackie on tenor. He sounds surprisingly(or maybe not so surprisingly) close to Hank Mobley.

Jackie's alto is much more distinctive, with his tenor sax playing sounding much like Saxophone Colossus era Rollins.

Gilly Coggins is the piano player on this cut. A car accident led to his hospitalization, where he died. Up until the accident he ran a jam session at the C-Note (now defunct). Not only was he a consummate master of the88's,he had a deeply ironic take on the vagaries and injustices of the music business. I once told him I read a glowing article about him in a reference work and he said "Yeah..Did it say how broke I am"?

I caught Gil Coggins in a small dark club in Japan once playing solo, 1992.

A true treasure, with an extremely rare and wonderful glimpse "behind the scenes". I suppose most producers/record companies failed to see the value of occasionally leaving in some of these segments.(Most of them were Miles' comments to Rudy Van Gelder or Teo Macero, which are brief but priceless)

A real favorite of mine. I wish it included the short piece at the front where they stop playing, discuss how it is to be played and someone says "Play when you feel like playing!"

From Wikipedia: John Lenwood "Jackie" McLean (May 17, 1931 - March 31, 2006)[ was a North-American jazz alto saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and educator, and is one of the few musicians to be elected to the DownBeat Hall of Fame in the year of their death.

This omits the 2-3 minutes of discussion on my LP--which is all the time required to pick a tune, a key, a tempo. I remember the strong walking start as Doug Watkins, but hearing it now I can recognize the sound and note choices as Paul Chambers. Curtis plays as good a solo as I've heard from him, and Jackie's tenor sax sounds like his main ax.

+caponsacchi i had a very similar reaction when I first listened. first I thought 'doug watkins' then later, that it's got to be paul chambers. Jackie fooled me on tenor which I didn't know he played. my guess would havebeen maybe lucky Thompson on tenor. it's all good.

I love that old imagery, like say Lester Young nodding in his big hat, wisps of cigarette smoke all around. I was born too late - would love to have been hitting the bars and clubs in those days.

You can hear it’s Jackie when he is playing tenor but listening it’s clear his tenor playing is influenced by his childhood friend Sonny Rollins!
