"Summer Rain", by Johnny Rivers, was released in 1967 and reached the #14 spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #10 on the U.S. Cash Box Top 100, and #10 in Canada in early 1968. It also became his 8th international hit. The song was written by songwriter James Hendricks. The lyrics reflect on a previous summer of casual love and references The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, and the Rascals' song "Groovin'. Born in New York City, his family moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he began his career at an early age and was influenced by the distinctive Louisiana musical style. Later, he adopted the stage name "Rivers" based on the Mississippi River. He was one of the few performers to weather the British music invasion during the 60's by making subtle changes in his his music direction by recording ballads that mixed his soulful voice with smooth-sounding backing vocalists. Not only a singer/songwriter, Rivers also started his own record production company, Soul City Records. Though he has won two Grammy Awards, Rivers has yet to be inducted into the R&R Hall Fame as of 2019.

It is May 2024 as I hear an early morning rain outside my window in Northern CA. My mind naturally went to this song. My mind went to a time and space I remember well with fondness. Thank you Johnny for capturing gentleness in the simple pleasures of life.

ALWAYS loved Johnny Rivers. Soundtrack to my youth. "Mission: Impossible" had its theme, but the James Bond series had undistinguished music in its opening...but Johnny Rivers' "Secret Agent Man" TOTALLY captured the whole thing. Just Great! "Poor Side of Town", "Slow Dancin'" and soe many more. Just a great voice and style!!

Omg, I found it!!! This song has been in my head for years. I did not know a lot of the words or who sung it but the melody kept playing in my head. I have been searching for years. Folks it doesn't get any better than this. Johnny at his best. The Wrecking Crew backing him with the great Hal Blaine on drums, Joe Osborn, Larry K., and several other great session musicians. Marty Paitch arrangements, Lou Adler, James Burton, and the list goes on. This came out on a single in late 1967. Song written by James "Jim" Hendricks - Nashville gospel singer-songwriter. IF THIS WAS RELEASED TODAY 3-3-2017 IT WOULD BE AT HIT. Gosh, I went into the USAF 49 years ago today -- brings back GREAT memories. This song was BIG in VIETNAM ................................ Johnny Rivers was so unique and different from the other artists at this time. He was basically playing at the same venues as the DOORS in LA at the same time but was completely different. Truly a great artist that left an indelible mark in my reflections of my youth. And totally deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

This was October, November 1967. Sgt Peppers was still ruling the radio, with a ton of other great songs. But then this song tied it all together nicely with its psychedelic wrinkles. Thank ____ I was there!!!

I can envision visiting my family in Atlanta when the song was new. Everywhere I went I would hear the song and I can see their faces used to make me sad. Now it makes me happy that I had them and one day I'll see them again😊

Thanks for posting this version of the song -- there are others on KZbin that chop off the ending. And that's a shame when the song features several catchy drum triplets (the slow "1-2-3" beat starting at 3:22 and repeating every 4 seconds till the fade).

Thanks for the comment. I try to make sure that the whole song is there when I view the audio. I get annoyed when DJs start talking over the beginning of a song on the radio.

I bug the R&R Hall of fame each year to get Rivers inducted into it! I just did it last week again, in fact. They still haven't inducted Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull. I don't know what they're waiting for - these guys aren't young anymore!

No doubt there's a political undercurrent that exists in or around the R&R Hall of Fame. There are those that deserve be in and others that are in should still be waiting their turn. Kudos on your persistence. More people need to be following your lead!

Then there are those who don't deserve to be in it, hence, the politics. That's what politics are all about.

Nora Amrani he has three strikes against him... he's white, a male and a republican. They'll never let him in. But on the other hand, he has given his millions of fans some of the best music you could ask for. The rrhof is like the motion picture academy...a bunch of snobs patting themselves on the back. Who needs them? He has us.

If he's a Republican (I researched it and found nothing to suggest this), his politics have changed as he was a McGovern supporter and at one time an organic farmer (I don't know if he still is or not). If anything is keeping him out, I would say it's ageism and the fact that his music isn't "edgy," which seems to be a priority. Instead, his music is musical and his lyrics are lyrical. Just the way I love it!

Agree ! Johnny Rivers ! A song writer, number one hit in USA, plus many top 10 hits, Producer, Grammy award winner, Musician. What more does he have to do to be in the rock and roll hall of fame ??? Considering some of the "waste of talent" that have been accepted into the "Rock and Roll" hall of fame, Johnny Rivers should have accepted 30 years ago !

SUMMER RAIN Summer rain taps at my window West wind soft as a sweet dream My love warm as a sunshine Settin' here by me, she's here by me She stepped out of rainbow Golden hair shinin' like moon glow Warm lips soft as a soul Settin' here by me, she's here by me All summer long, we spent dancin' in the sand And the jukebox kept on playin' "Sergeant pepper's lonely hearts club band" We sailed into the sunset Drifted home caught by gulf stream Never gave a thought for tomorrow Just let tomorrow be, now, let tomorrow be She wants to live in the rookies She says that's where we'll find place Settle down raise up a fami'y To call our own, yeah, We'll have home All summer long, we spent groovin' in the sand Everybody kept on playin' "Sergeant pepper's lonely hearts club band" The snow drifts by my window North wind blowin' like thunder Our love's burnin' like fire And she's here by me, yeah, she's here with me, Let tomorrow be
