These years were the golden years of diesels. Cummins with their legendary N14, Detroit with their venerable Series 60, and CAT with the mighty 3406E. Folks argue on which one of the 3 was "best" or "better", but the truth is all 3 of them were extremely good engines.

Yep they sure knew how to put them together in the 90's. All of the power and none of the BS.

I've always wondered why these older trucks have problems starting in the cold. I own a 2016 freightliner an shes cranks up immediately even in 0 degree weather. Does anyone know the difference? Great video an the is really amazing on those older trucks.
@KeaganBaggett2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm not sure on that one myself. This is really the only time it's been cold enough here for it to give me a hard time. I wasn't really even sure if it would be hard to start but it definitely was. It normally fires right up if it's in the 30s or higher. My pickup truck was the same way that morning.
@KubanKevin2 жыл бұрын
In general (not always) newer engines have a higher compression psi due to the seals being in better health which heats up the cylinders much faster causing them to struggle less on startup. I'm taking a guess on my next reason, but its possible that newer engines have glow plugs / block heaters which can kick in before startup and with the first reason in mind, cause them to start faster.

I'd say higher compression ratios. This truck has 16.1 most newer engines are 18.1 or higher.
@ruxoneto6560 Жыл бұрын
Higher compression old engine's had 13.8- 15.5 newer engines 16- 18.9 compression bigger cams , later timing, & higher injections pressure .

Why do they always have 2 exhaust stacks when there not v8

They're still louder with duals even though they're a inline 6. I think the truck looks better with duals too.

Why have the drivers side stack if it’s not being used?
@KeaganBaggett Жыл бұрын
It is being used now. At the time it had a bad clamp on the flex pipe so the smoke didn't make it out the top. But either way it definitely wouldn't look right with just one 14 foot tall stack on one side...

"Hard Freeze" in Florida is 32°F / 0°C . . .
@KeaganBaggett Жыл бұрын
It's cold enough for me. I've been all over the country and seen plenty of cold, but i'll never live any further north. It was 16°F for several hours that night. 32°F isn't cold enough to make a truck not want to start. It gets this cool in the panhandle at least once a year. It just happened again a few months ago. All of the pipes in my shop busted.

With it being an E model the only thing it has performance wise that didn't come from the factory is a pdi ecm tuner. It's a factory 550 so it didn't have to make a huge jump. But yes it was definitely still expensive.

Yep the factory 600s were 15.8 liters used more in the heavy haul trucks. But with either one there's definitely endless possibilities
@trucker18642 жыл бұрын
@@KeaganBaggett You should try getting a tune from a tuner. PDI tunes tend to suck fuel down and run hot. Are you running stock turbo ?
