My first-hand knowledge of international power struggles is limited. What I have learned is that without first-hand knowledge, one has to rely on others. Others are often horribly wrong. Others often have incentive to make foreign threats worse than reality. Some others have incentives to make them less so. Most of the others are bad sources.

Russia can't beat Ukraine because of the support Ukraine is receiving from the Western World if that support evaporates so does Ukraine
