Why a Torsion Box?
A Torsion Box is a method to create a table top that cannot bend, flex, or warp in any way. And above all else to be perfectly flat. And that’s really it. The ultimate goal is simply to have an unchanging laser-flat surface.
This table is a request from several of my Patreon members and followers of the channel. It is multi-purpose and completely upgradable.
When I first put videos on KZbin, many asked me if I had a video of my old torsion box assembly table. I didn’t since it was created long before I ever brought a camera into my shop. I politely said no, but the questions never stopped, and eventually I decided that this is a must do project. And probably the most requested project I’ve ever done. I sent out some feeler questions to see what people would like to see. And I tried to combine all of those with my thoughts and create something that could take on many sizes. And in fact I did design this in 3 different table sizes with full plans for each. A Full Size 4’ x 8’ Table, A Mid-Size 3-1/2’ x 7’ Table, and A Smaller 3’ x 6’ Table. Each table has the identical set of functions, but of course the drawer count and size goes down on the smaller units.

Hello James, I realize that you have posted these videos many months ago but I wanted you to know that I have used them to instruct my student remotely during this pandemic. I wanted to thank you for making very user friendly videos that I could share with my students without worrying about anything inappropriate. You are a class act. I'm glad your daughters play an active role in your shop. I have a mixed group of students as well and the girls ussually pay more attention to details than the guys. Thanks again.

Wow everyone ! The bench looks awesome with all the Purple Heart accents and the vises plus. Little add ons I’m looking foward to many. New projects and videos with you guys using it despite being a fan of your channel and not a chauvinistic guy i still get a kick out of brightly painted fingernails Using a tablesaw and other. Woodworking tools James i envy you a great deal as my daughter showed very little interest in my Woodworking growing up i do have a younger son that did like to. Be with me and help on many projects today he is a grown man and is quite handy although he chose to work in the computer industry as his living he has always had general construction and Woodworking to fall back on if he needed to earn a living or extra money i of course never forced my daughter to Work with me. As she was the type of child that was happy reading books and has really turned out to be a very smart and successful Woman, wife , and Mother as well as educating children. For her career choice

I'm a big fan of pocket hole joinery, to. Easy, strong, fast, and doesn't require jigs or lots of experience to make anything. It's a lot harder to set up a dovetail jig! Great ideas I can use, even if I don't build the exact cabinet you show. I have about ten but twelve foot space for my workshop so some of these will work great! Thanks again!

I normally have issues with either the design of something or how it's put together, but this beast is one of very few things I've seen where I can't disagree with any aspect of it! Very impressive. I personally prefer to not use pocket holes but I also have a Domino, so I'm lucky there. I have avoided figuring out what I'll do for a proper bench when I move my old small shop into the new big one I'm building because I didn't think I'd find anything I'd really like and would have to design my own. But you've fixed that, so expect a plans purchase from me!

I agree 100%, pocket hole joinery is a great method for joining two pieces of wood together, especially shop projects like this. Despite what purists might say, if you’re cutting, shaping and joining wood together into a shape, it’s woodworking. Doesn’t matter how you do it. Keep up the good work. I really like the design of this assembly/outfeed table.

Excellent design. The bench is built like an aircraft carrier and will last many years. BTW. I am totally in agreement about using more than enough glue. Glue is our friend. It is inexpensive, It is strong. It is reliable. And if you talk to it nicely and get it to know you as a person, it will never set up too quickly -- or so I have heard. Great project. I enjoy watching everyone work together. It reminds me of my dad's cabinet shop. All hands on deck! Best regards...

I really find your videos interesting in many aspects. I find the TEAM work really valuable and I'll encourage you to engage in referencing that, the TEAM work in your videos. Many times you speak in singular, when it would be better if you speak in PLURAL, WE did this, WE made this..as is not only you making, are your talented girls also part of the TEAM. Keep up the good work!

Hi Oscar. You are so correct. I have a very bad habit of saying that I did something when, in fact, it was not me. Thank you for pointing that out. I will try very hard in the future to say "We". My daughters are all very talented woodworkers and I am enormously proud of them. ~James

Great, James! Your videos are amazing and they show how collaborative work can make things happen. Many Woodworkers KZbinrs work on their own, you are one of the exceptions and having that Team work, makes everything different, that's something you can further 'exploit' for your channel. I'm really sure your kids feel proud of being part of an amazing team. Again, keep up the great work! have a great day'

Built like a tank! Was need to watch. I wish I had room in my shop for something like this , maybe I might be able to squeezes in the 3x6 one, my only personal gripe is I miss the nerdy t-shirts but this is just because I am a big nerd.

Hello James I love your channel, you explain everything so clearly and well. I am a novice, but these vlogs are so inspiring.. yours is one of the best, if not the best on KZbin. I am from the UK, and I don’t think that some of the hardwoods that you use are not so readily available over here, or are incredibly expensive. I am watching to discover which are the best tools , over here there are some diy stores with their own brands of power tools, but they really are garbage. We are always better saving up for recognised brands. Keep up the good work

Hi James (and other family members). You folks are wonderful, very informative and helpful, not to mention a friendly and happy channel with relatively low trolling. Most of the projects , while beautiful and great examples of woodworking skills, for me personally are out of my reach at this point as a relative newb. If you are looking for suggestions for future vids, I might suggest something that takes off from your basic woodworking 101 series, and shows how to move from just tool knowledge and collecting tools, to a more project oriented mode that gets folks over the hump of making that transition. That may not be the direction you want to take things, and that’s ok too, as I will still enjoy and learn from whatever you put out. Best regards to you all, Dave.

Hi Dave. Thank you for the recommendation. I do intend to do exactly that with the Woodworking 101 series. I plan on having a number of fairly simple projects beginning with a basic work table/bench. That will be in lesson 4 which will hit in about two weeks.

I see that you have a metal lathe in your shop. If you haven't already found Tom Lipton's channel yet, it is called Oxtool, he is a fantastic teacher and is very knowledgeable in machining and fabrication. You should check out his channel. One of Tom's montras is "Nothing overbuilt ever failed!". I love your builds, there are overbuilt and awesome!

Beautiful bench! It gives me a lot of ideas for my workbench! The only thing I might have done differently is added some cutouts to the torsion box inserts near the sides so I could put in clamps horizontally and clamp to the sides rather than just the top or bottom. Though you have some really nice clamps on there, you might not need that ability.

I envy all the really nice clamps you have. They are worth the investment though and make glue ups less agrevating. Im slowly doing away with pipe clamps

This might be a dumb question but what would be the minimum or maximum distance between clamps when gluing something? I see on many many youtubers that they have hundreds and hundreds of clamps and I think I will have to make a loan just for clamps.
