Warranties are funny things. They can't prove that you installed 3rd party memory and certainly installing compatible memory isn't likely to damage a NAS. At least in the United States, this type of warranty voiding is illegal. The FTC has repeatedly warned manufacturers about this, but they don't listen as most countries don't have those laws.

I originally purchased an additional 4gb from Synology, can’t lie the cost did make me wince, then after a month I decided to bite the bull it and purchase 2 x 16gb non-Synology ram and it works a treat, never had an issue. You do get a warning when you start the NAS but it’s just a notification and is not an issue. I appreciate that the Synology warranty is void, but as this is not a business critical NAS, that not an issue. Anyone want to buy 4gb of Synology ram, going cheap.

The video was perfect timing, helped guide my decision to implement 2x16G Crucial Dual Memory to future-proof my initial system purchase. Was very encouraged to see the 1621+ recognize 64GB in the system, and hopeful to see a demonstration of 2 VM's running w/32GB each, if this would make use of the 64GB en total. I realize Plex may not use it all, but I di intend to run surveillance cameras as the overall build starts to take shape. - Good Job guys!

Robbie, like the DS918+ when you use 16gb of Memory, it works, ok. But the clincher is that you lose dual channel support. The nas will run significantly slower to the point of disrupting the ssd cache. It will error and complain. The same is happening with that 64gig you threw in there, wasn't just the vm's taxing the cpu as you did the same with the 32gig, but you are losing duel channel support. I bet if you ssd cached that config, you will get the same errors as the ds918+ with 16 gig of memory. The synology cache software can only address the memory as duel channel only when two modules are used. Synology have deliberately done this so people wouldn't be complaining about slow nas performance with an over spected nas. Not many people know this and complain to synology about their poor ssd cache implementation. Hope this helps. It works yeh. But not everything is kosher. Qnap don't have the same control on software as synology do and I bet their nas will slow too with no dual channel support like the synology, just that their software won't run alarm bells. Most people will put it down to the nas having to address a large ram data pool. The nas will fall over a lot more than with 32 gig. Cheers from oz.

Just purchased a DS1821+ and so far, so good. However, the difference from a Drobo (Drobo FS, 5D, Pro or 5S) doing a name search on a Mac through finder for a file vs the Synology doing a search through finder is like night and day. The Drobo reacts much like a attached hard drive with results coming up quickly, where the Synology always takes 5 to 8 minutes before results start showing up and many times are incomplete. So, will RAM or M2 MVME help to speed this process up or is this just something I am going to have to live with.

My Synology ds1621xs crushed and can’t boot up after I upgraded 2X16 timetec ram into the two slots. Blue lights flashing continually on the first power up. When I swap it back to the original 8G Synology ram, it is still not booting and flashing blue light. Now can’t go into DSM to setup. Pulled all attached devices , HDD and cable line, it is still a brick. The timetec ram is compatible for this model and checked before on the seller website in amazon us. Is there anyway to boot NAS up before send it back for RAM? Anyone had same experience?

I don't understand how Synology can illegally State warranty is Voided if using a 3rd party product. Here in United States it's illegal for even car manufacturers to make such a Statement and open themselves up for a lawsuit. It's slandering 3rd Party legal Products. If I was Synology I would update their Statement on usage of 3rd Party Warranty. I might just sue them myself for this 🤗
@michaelsmith63993 жыл бұрын
It’s not illegal for them to SAY it, it’s just illegal if they actually deny warranty support in the USA. Other countries may vary, so they win by making people fear.
@ELEVOPR3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelsmith6399 It's actually illegal, because you are defaming a 3rd Party Product and the company that makes that Product can sue you as well. Example- If my card dealer tells me or warns me, that installing a Viper Alarm by my Alarm guy would void my warranty on my car as apposed to paying them $1,500 for the same alarm I am getting for $500 would be dangerous waters for my car dealer If I record him saying that. Not only can Viper Alarm company sue him, my Alarm installer can also so him, because he's the one they are also taking business from with false claims. That's an example, and a real one I went through with my alarm guy. In the end he end up having a 3 year contract with car dealer to settle out of court. So for me, that was a real life Experience.

Supported Config and Warranty are two totally different things in US English... an Unsupported configuration is using 64gb or non Synology RAM.. BUT it does not void any warranty as it cannot technically do that.. just when you call in with a problem they wont support your issue until you change something back to their specs then they will provide tech support.. Basically a lot of times it just means they have not tested it or engineered it to work that way .. as long as you don't break it your warranty is good as it covers hardware that decided to not work properly or properly pass electrons anymore.. changing out memory wont "break" things unless you have static in your fingers while upgrading your memory....
@ewitte12 Жыл бұрын
The most ill do is keep the original. Just put it back in when you need support. If the problem is the 3rd party hardware support should be with the other company anyway.

Double check that the memory you purchased in DR (Dual Rank) as many websites including Amazon will substitute/switch to the SR version if the DR is not available (near identical part numbers). They do not do this in a trick way, even the memory Manf's recommend this in their spreadsheets.

@@techable7524 that is because you must use ecc memory at 16gig or 32gig to avoid the warning as synology don't sell non ecc for those nas above 8gig. A bit of the check on their software again. I went for the supported memory to protect my extended warranty plan. However since it more than double as expensive as the non-branded memory modules I went for 2 4GB modules instead. In my case I just wanted my Qnap NAS to run without VMs. My Initial 4GB where not enough to support both backup tasks and PLEX at the same time. With Plex Active the NAS was reaching an utilization of 85% and started swapping data to the harddrives. At that point the System became unstable and unresposive to a point where I had to reboot it every day.
