On the topic of foot binding: There is a wonderful Chinese story in the book Flowers in the Mirror by Li Ruzhen about the group of male adventurers visiting a country populated by women. The book was written in 1827, for western context that's about 50 years after the French revolution. At the time, foot binding was still practiced but I believe was beginning it's slow decline. In the story, the nation of women force men into the social role of women and have them perform gender in the way that women were expected to. This leads to an extremely striking depiction of one of the main male characters being at once disfigured and emasculated through having his feet bound, as well as making a very interesting proto-feminist point about the treatment of women in a male-dominated society. I would highly recommend giving it a read. Love the channel, commenting for the algorithm. Keep it going ! xoxo

What you dont seem to be aware of is that Edward III banned all forms of sport so that young men would spend Sundays practicing archery, a skill deemed necessary to the realm. 25:03 "One reason for Columbus' 1492 voyage to the Americas was to dismiss the Flat Earth Theory." Really? I thought this was just a persistent myth. Even now, with some Googling, the first several results seem to agree that there was a consensus that the Earth was round in 1492 Europe. I am surprised to hear this on this channel. I trust your opinion. If you have a reason to believe otherwise, would you be willing to follow up on this? Edit: Nevermind, MedievalMadness says the opposite at 1:00:42. Did I misinterpret the way the first entry was phrased? They sound to be in contradiction with one another.
@left4twenty2 жыл бұрын
Given the framing of the first comment, it was just meant as a slam on flat earthers stupidity. They do believe that about columbus, which if its looked into for a single second, it becomes obvious that even in columbus' time, the hypothesis of a flat disc was bunk

⁉️ I don't know if you've ever covered this, but I've always wondered if after the plague, did survivors get to take and keep the belongings of those who had died? Did contents of a home go to surviving family members or did Kings & Nobility get everything? I'm particularly curious what happened to businesses, homes & land. I suppose land was already in the hands of Nobles or the Church? But, how did that all work? Were people allowed to make wills in medieval Europe & were they honored ⁉️ Also, did the plague spread to the Far East? I don't think I've ever heard stories about this. What was it like there in Medieval times? Do you ever cover this? Got my answer...@ 35:17 & 36:19 (joy the plague part but I'm guessing it's around) Thank you! 🙏 love your channel! I really appreciate the fact you called out the later denunciation of the Medieval church as having "suppressed science" as a myth. In fact, the Medieval church was the principal patron of scientific research and discovery at the time. The main reason the church suppressed Galileo's publications was because he published what amounted to a scientific paper without having gone through the scientific community (i.e. the church) for peer review or confirmation of his findings. The church would indeed go on to support the Heliocentric model of the solar system once more research had been done. Galileo was smart but also stubborn and bit of a jerk. I also appreciated the fact you pointed out that the Medieval church did not believe in physical witchcraft - that is that "magic" was real. The believed that witches, mediums, and so forth were hucksters and tricksters who create "counterfeit miracles" to dupe people and take their money while also leading them astray into falsehoods - just like they do today!
@shelaghflynn71512 жыл бұрын
Yeah... That's why it took five hundred years for the church to admit it had been in the wrong with Galileo. It's not defensible. The Vatican sucks

Always a fascinating subject. You chose just the right, awesome music & great pics for the video. A couple of interesting things abt these catacombs, there's an Airbnb for 2 ppl. The room is in the video at 3:27. There's a skulls & bones wall right behind the headboard of bed, the room is lit by candlelight, ppl can have candlelit meals in the room & someone tells the 2 customers a "bedtime story" abt how the catacombs are haunted. There's also areas that are flooded & some of them, ppl can go swimming or scuba diving. The water is crystal blue & stays at a cool, but not freezing temp, even when it's snowing or hot above ground. A few yrs ago, during a heatwave when all of the pools around Paris were full of ppl, some ppl went into the water in the catacombs to cool off.
