Nicely done. That's a HELL of a lot of power going into a cut like that. Hooking 4 works if you're in potato type dirt (clean dirt, no rocks etc), sand, or even hard packed clay. I've been involved in a LOT of triples and occasionally 4 at a time, usually as a middle scraper. You let the guys with less experience lead or push. The reason for that is if you're in the center you have to watch the lead as he starts to pull his can up and make sure your bail is tight before you set your can in the ground. If it's loose and you set in too early, there's a good chance it can get ripped off or snapped in half. There are a lot of little things you learn with experience. I can sit here and type or lecture all day on how to do it but you get good by having your ass in the seat and operating it yourself.

I worked on 657 crew for 9 years and this practice would get all involved fired . The added stress often breaks the bail [what goes over hook] and does stress to goose neck on scrapers. Often this was done with stuck equipment and I've seen up to 6 scrapers hooked together but the bails on rear scrapers just brake. Its beyond design limits of the machine.

Wow. That's a sight to see. 4 x 657's working so efficiently. They don't fuck around. Hitch, load 1, 2, 3, and 4. Un-hitch 4, 3, and 2. Race off to the fill or stockpile, race back. Rinse and repeat. All day. I'd love to get some seat time in a 657, if it had working air con.

Definitely a quick way to load, but with that much power, it's waay to much strain on the fourth scraper's bale. A hairline crack within an abused bale, (and they all are) and it'll just pull right apart. It happens, but then be prepared to get your butt chewed out by the boss and mechanics. I have years of twin scraper time, and once while on a 657E, I fell in with the 651 spread, and got a few triple D10T pushes which resulted in instant, dirt boiling loads. What a fun time that was!.....

Okay help me just a bit, I have some excavating experience, I don't have much scraper experience, did it once, was allowed to try it for an hour or so with a dozer pushing. I've never seen this, explain the logic here. I suppose the plan is that you don't lower all the scrapers at once? Correct? That way you are either "pushing" or Pulling" with each of the scrapers helping each other out, eliminating a dozer. Obviously it goes #1, then #2, then #3, then #4 or can they work 2 and 2, depends on the soil? A little help with how its done, I would be appreciative to learn.
@stevewilson97924 жыл бұрын
Tandem scrapers better than quads by any measure. Risk of equipment damage is high with this method. I ran Cat 657 in push-pull operation with the same partner for several companies on several different jobs, in different conditions. We could routinely "lap" other scraper pairs. It was fun! Partner got out of HE due to back issues. Sad day when he left.

@@stevewilson9792 Thanks for sharing Steve, the 2 guys who I ran my 1 day of scrapers with have actually, all 3 of them dead. That leaves only me, the one with no experience. LOL I'm an applications engineer but I used to own a developement company and did lots of excaating. I moved a small hill on my farm once using the scraper back during that time. It was fun to play for ashile. When they let the 12 year old neighbor boy use the D7 and push me he STILL talks about "how cool" those dudes were to let him do that. (He played with farm tractors and Bobcats, etc. so he had a little equipment ability.) Just picture 2 kids playing in the sandbox. My 30 year old ass at the time and his 12 year old butt. The dozer guy was an American Indian as I remember.

@stevewilson97924 жыл бұрын
No where near as effective as tandem push-pulls. Pair of 657 Cats with good operators can move massive amounts of dirt. A lot of time you'll see a big hoe or big shovel loading mining dump trucks these days instead. Some college boy did some "new math" and trucks&shovels(or hoe) more efficient than cans. Not always and not for every job either. A great scraper operator can do thing with his can that defies the law of physics. Mind blowing to watch. Intimidating as heck to try the first time. Big satisfaction when you&your partner did what "THEY" said can't be done

hooking 4 of these together is grounds for termination in my book, they are designed and built to be only 2 working together, each unit at about 950 HP, each additional unit being in the equation adds more stress to the units, so weak points of each machine is the bail on the front, the hitch or neck, frog ( cutting edges), and rear hook on the back of each machine, it only takes one large stone, to completely tear one of these machines apart and stopping all 4 machines at full throttle will takes 5-10 sec, costing thousands in down times, if maintenance on each unit is not in brand new status, eventually there will be an expensive repair
@mhoff57777 жыл бұрын
I run push pull 627's up to 657's. You are so right, 2 together is plenty. You do damage to the pan floors with all this power and overloading. These (Scraper-DRIVERS) should be fired for doing this with these expensive scrapers.
