There are so many options available to us today, choosing the right dust extractor or shopvac can be a minefield. I'll take you through the approach I took to buying the right one for me.

As always you are responsible for your own safety in your workshop, so do your own research, and come to your own conclusions about what is or isn't safe in your specific situation. If you see anything in my videos which you think is unsafe or ill-advised please let me know in the comments.

I have a very similar but older model of DE from axminster and it has served me very well. I use it in combo with a cyclone and it is very effective. A tip for the cartridge, get rid of the paddle, all they do is wear out the paper filter and don't really help remove built up dust anyway. For cleaning the filter I use my henry hoover in combination with a dust deputy cyclone and a HEPA filter bag. Does a great job and much less messy and dangerous than other cleaning methods I have seen recommended.

Size might also be a useful metric to use when choosing.

Be interesting to know if you’d have chosen differently if budget wasn’t a concern (within reason). The AC118CE isn’t as good a deal on paper but of course it includes a separator and has a more powerful motor which the spreadsheet doesn’t really account for. There’s one locally to me for about £500 with a bunch of ducting/fittings which seems like a decent buy..

Thanks for the comment. My approach to decision making using the spreadsheet depends heavily on value judgements, which as you point out will be different for different people. For me the separator wasn't necessary, as a hobby workshop I don't make enough dust to see any benefit from separating out the bulk dust, and the separator adds significantly to the size of the machine and space is a real premium in my workshop. If I was cutting all day long, every day, then a separator would be a must but as it is I only fill the bag very infrequently. :-)

@@DIYTinkerer very true re: amount of dust I suppose. I hadn’t thought of it that way, I was thinking more of the benefits of having less dust hitting the filter and motor. If you had the space & budget it would be a no brainer I guess

I suppose the most important thing to do when choosing machinery is choose the model you feel meets most your needs but look at the one above it and below it to see if you are getting good value. E.g with the craft machines I went with the ac153e with cartridge filter, because if I want to use ducting one day then it will need the extra power to get to the machines, however it’s all about budget. I tend to go secondhand if it means I can get the bigger/more powerful model. I like your spreadsheet method though- it helps

That's great advice, thanks for sharing, I've now had the dust extractor for a year and I can't say anything bad about it, although I'm still moving hoses between machines which whilst simple to do is a pain..
