Another fantastic episode thanks B&D. I saw a huge salty from the top of Branko's Lookout on El Questro a couple of years back. Thanks for taking us on your trip. I'm really enjoying it. No surprises with a bit of damage to your gear and the cars though. It's got me rogered how so many people roar up and own the GRR towing huge caravans over those corrugations. Their gear must cop a beating so I reckon the local towing contractors and mechanics just wait patiently - just like an old man croc. :)

Hi Daniel and Bianca, I have the same bullbar on my Prado 150 with STEDI spotties which I loved for the looks etc. We are from Vic and on our first trip away when in Exmouth I noticed the same thing happen to our bar. We returned home via the great central rd to Uluru and while in the flinders ranges I noticed the bar cracked and split right through the top plate beside the spotties. This meant removing the spotties and cable tying the top plate down to stop the rattling. Upon returning home Offroad Animal have replaced the bar and added a bracing kit which was there fix. They supplied a new bar but don't cover any labour which I am told is the industry standard. I hope this fix works of course but to me the hole matter screams lack of product testing, as this happened so soon after installation. i am of course grateful they didn't argue about warranty but i can't see myself buying any more of there products as they cannot have done enough testing. Enjoy your travels and I enjoy watching them.

Hey mate! Oh that's interesting to hear! I thought perhaps it was my own fault for welding on custom spotlight mounting brackets right above the area that cracked (potentially subjecting it to more force than it was designed to take due to the brackets sitting forward), but interesting to hear that more bars have experienced something similar...

@exploreboundАй бұрын
Thanks mate! Yeah unsure about the bullbar, I did weld custom spotlight mounts on directly above the area that's cracked so potentially it's my fault haha.

Hey Daniel and Bianca, If you reach out to Offroad Animal about the bullbar damage, could you let us know how it goes? The Predator and Toro bars are on my shortlist for my D-Max build, so I'd love to hear about your experience!

Daniel, Bianca - you've gotta get permanent solar on RTT, you'd be surprised how effective it is as it's just always trickling something in whilst idle, like walking to viewing points etc for ½ hour plus, always something replenishing the draw. You'll think I'm odd, but I purposely never park in the shade, full sun every stop, shopping, camping whatever as solar input is prioritised over my comfort. Besides, the RTT insulates really well on a wagon hence stopping car internal space being exceptionally hot after returning from viewing points etc. Have to note also, the example you showed of the solar blanket shaded by a tree limb, well you may as well left the blanket disconnected. Blankets need to be in full sun, no shade whatsoever to be effective. In regard to the Gibb, we've only ever driven it once in November 1999. Got a weather update prior to going, rain expected Monday. Well, it was Saturday, so we headed off, east to west.. Corrugations had dashboard clattering, car skating around hideously. I ellected to turn around at the El'Questro station junction, but once there the corrugations went into El'Questro, the Gibb ahead was great, so we pushed on. Pentecost River for lunch, when weather closed in, it blew like all hell, the skies openned and the rains just pelted down, so much for weather update. Off over the Pentecost and west we head. The rain was relentless, the track turned to slop, turns left at junction to Mitchells Falls, no point going there, Broome ASAP for us now. The road deteriates to black mud, slip sliding all over it, bugger all grip, camper trailer sliding this way, then the other, nope, corrugations didn't exist, hence we experienced zero damage. Rain let up, we camped up, so friggin fatigued from that drive. A couple turned up from west, they're in a pristine clean troopy, "Can we share your camp"? Well "Yes, of coarse you can". Then he says "Where have you come from"? whilst looking at our mud caked Jackaroo & camper. I looking at his pristine troopie "Where did you come from first"?. His response "Broome". I reply "Well that's where I'm headed, you're headed east, into the slop we've just come off of". 😆😂🤣 One of those moments I've always treasured, going of to sleep knowing the route ahead was far better than what we'd experienced, slept really well. That was our Gibb experience.

Appreciate the advice there, thanks! I've been wanting to setup permanent roof solar for a while now just haven't got around to it yet (plus would need an ultra-slim setup as the Dmax only just fits in the garage at the moment as is haha). Wow what an experience!! Hopefully you'll get to do the Gibb again one day with better weather on the eastern half. 🙂
@ianweal3081Ай бұрын
@@explorebound not that I think you want what I use, but I utilise solar mats that can be glued directly upon the roof, but that has zero air circulation, and heat denigrates out put. For that reason I mounted them to our RTT via heavy duty corflute of 12mm thickness, hence about 20mm height overall with wiring terminals. It certainly is as slim as I can figure. I do have amorphous solar mats mounted directly to our vehicle roof by silicon as amorphous aren't affected by heat but there is less output by area coverage, hence these just keep batteries topped up when basically zero draw on system, not camping, RTT removed. Gibb River Road again one day. Lots to still see ourselves but due to the footage you and others put up we get to see things ahead of time and plan spots to see, so thankyou.

Lovely ep and spots guys, Hope you got your power setup sorted, I did the gibb upto McGowans fishing camp in June this year in our 1990- 1HZ - n/a 80 series towing our 5m tinny I stayed there nearly a month had great fishing, The old girl and boat trailer just ate up the road its was good to when I was there 36 years ago, I run a DCDC charger and a separate solar controller and carry back up solar controller,, and panels

Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the ep! That must have been an incredible trip up to McGowan Island - we were considering heading up through Kalumburu but didn't have the time available for this trip (more reason to head back at some stage we reckon!). 🙂

No swimming at Pentecost. Seen alot of Crocs… also what tire pressure were you guys at corrugation and what speed were you travelling at? We did GRR twice with two different Van. We did not get much damage as you guys have. I wasnt going slow. But tires were 25 front 30 back. Fire to Fork Harry’s offroad bar broke from corrugation. I honestly don’t think they are built for Australian condition. Hopefully they give you new bar as Harry did.
@exploreboundАй бұрын
Tyres were at 25 and speed varied with conditions, but found around 60kph was good for the most part. The Gibb itself was fine really, probably better than we were expecting corrugations wise haha, it was the track up to the Mitchell Plateau that was the rough part where most damage occurred we reckon. 🙂

So did you manage to top up your batteries? Was your solar blanket faulty? What was your charge rate when driving. I find the size of the battery is not important as much as how fast you can replenish it.
@exploreboundАй бұрын
We made it work for the rest of the trip, we were just mindful of how much power we were using vs. replenishing haha, and using the gas cooker when we didn't want to risk it. On the road we were putting in a little under 40A. 🙂

hi guys just interested in what cameras you use footage is so clear
@exploreboundАй бұрын
Hey mate! The main camera used was a Sony A6700 with Sigma 16mm 1.4 and Sony 18-105 OSS lenses. In-car we use a GoPro Hero 11, and the drone is a DJI Mavic 3 Classic. 🙂

Yep that's the one! Had mine for close to 2 years now and has been working well up until this trip, disappointing for it to fail when we were somewhat depending on it haha. 😅 Hopefully you get yours sorted soon. 🙂
