It makes sense for freebanders to operate around 3.4, 6.8, and 13.7 MHz as these are resonant frequencies for a half wave antenna (long wire) and a matching unit e.g., 49:1, 64:1 etc… resonant harmonics from 3.4 to 27.55 MHz.

I used to run a very successful pirate radio station in Dublin in the 80s and 90s with over 100,000 listeners, we mainly broadcast on FM with 1kW commercial transmitters. We also had a small home brew medium wave transmitter and 24 hour shortwave service on 6220kHz using 813 valves. We received reception reports from all over the northern hemisphere, but only one from Australia, those crazy guys had taken a week off work and erected a long wire antenna over a lake solely with the purpose of picking us up. They were frustrated for the first six days, it finally managed to pick us up on their final day beside the lake. They sent us a tape recording of our transmission, and it was very weak and scratchy, but our jingles were clearly heard. Over the years we sent out thousands of QSL cards to listeners, we also had many regular listeners all over Europe who would ring us up for requests. They were very exiting times. Now I’m just a boring old fart with a ham licence legally pushing out a lot more power on HF than I ever did as a pirate!

6670KHz LSB is the freebanders calling- & monitoringfrequency in the 45m Band, like 27555KHz USB is in 11m. 6678KHz would be when they sit a bit beside the monitoringfrequency to have their QSO, like people call on 27555 and then QSY a bit up or down for QSO. its nothing uncommon for freebanders. there is usually freebanders a bit below the ham frequencies, around 3450KHz LSB are some too or around 2300KHz im AM (speech) from russia. how is that illegal to listen to these freebanders?? i mean how would they know you have tuned your radio in on them ??

I seem to remember hearing sirens around that area of the band as well. It's illegal where you are to listen to ANYTHING? I am in America. They way we view it, those are the public's airwaves and I can listen to ANYTHING I want. Transmitting is limited, yes, but to conserve a public resource. Reception equipment is sold blocked in the cell phone range, but that has to do with an expectation of privacy, and as far as I know, to actually have the equipment isn't illegal. It just isn't sold. I just found that statement shocking. Where are you?

I think it goes back to the pirate ship days in the 60s. It was made illegal to listen to Radio London and Caroline etc to frighten people.
@Bartok_J2 жыл бұрын
@@g4nsj I think it goes back long before that. In theory, licensed broadcasts, licensed amateurs and things like Standard Time and Frequency stations (e.g. MSF) are all you should listen to, even if you keep it to yourself. If you pass on what you've heard to a third party, that's a further offence. I vaguely recall that when I took my VHF Marine Radio Certificate (which is a certificate of competence, not a licence - that is linked to the vessel, not the person), I had to sign a declaration on "non-disclosure", i.e. I would only tell relevant people what I'd heard. In practice, the law is both unenforceable and unenforced, as anyone who has been to an air show knows.

Hi Ray, I must have missed this one. I like listening to the Satcom Satalite Pirate's hijacking US Military Satalite repeater on 255.550mhz of FM. They modify VHF radios. It's amazing what people do. Thank you Ray have a lovely day my good man.
