This is the one video I’ve been waiting for….have searched everywhere for information on this topic…I have a 70’ in need of this repair. Last owner for reasons unknown, cut off the springs and detents that hold the doors open.

Good video. I had to shape the window frames on my nova just interchanging to another set of GM doors. These cars were very crude from the factory as far as fitment. There's always room for improvement.
@carthageclassiccars26 күн бұрын
Thank you and I really appreciate the feedback on the factory doors, that's good to know as the factory ones I have run into so far hadn't needed much of adjustment, but you are correct they were very crude from the factory so I could see that.

Another great video, have that same window fitment problem on a C10, good timing on the fix😊
@carthageclassiccars26 күн бұрын
You're welcome. The c-10 i just finished up not too long ago if you can't get the top section to align you might have to pull the back spot welds on the window / door frame to lift it up. I did that and everything lined up a whole lot better. Good luck you should be able to dial it in.

I see so many people replacing quarters and/or fenders before they at least rebuild the door hinges. Then they cry when the doors don't line up later during the final body work.
@carthageclassiccars25 күн бұрын
I agree Jeff, so many of these cars are built missing some crucial steps then the owners come back and realize they made a big mistake. A lot of people ask why I don't film other cars in the shop and the real reason is exactly that. They jump around too much and confuse some as what to start with when building these cars and the steps involved. The big metal projects like this Nova that no one else has messed with are a step by step process. If someone watching their cars doesn't need that then they can skip that step . I agree and think every restoration needs at least a hinge rebuild

Rick any luck with the drip rail? I'm having the same problem..
@carthageclassiccars25 күн бұрын
No as of right now the drip rails for this car are not made. I think your best best is 69 Camaro and adjust accordingly

What held the top plate in place when you removed the hinge to weld in the patch? Temporary bolt?
@carthageclassiccars25 күн бұрын
Nothing that whole area has where it is supported and the older Novas had the cage in there so the plate basically was just stuck in there held in place. It can only move a little bit back and forth.

I hate that you run into problems but it does make me feel a little better knowing I’m not crazy on my build and run into these issues as well. I put a cowl hood on my truck and finding the hood is a little wider than oem and my fender to door profile is perfect so I don’t want to pull fenders out to widen the gap a little and then I would have to do doors as well. I have a tight 3/16 gap between hood and fender in both sides. Do you think by the time I add paint and clear I will be too tight? I’m just out of room and like I said I don’t want to bring fenders and doors outward cuz they fit good to upper cowl vent ect.
@carthageclassiccars26 күн бұрын
You are starting to push the limit at a tight 3/16. I think you will be on if you make sure you keep the edges clean from high build ect and seal it before paint and clear. Make sure you fit in the rubber guides in the fenders to hood and see how they work in there and make sure they don't mess you up. I would probably to be on the safe side just barely pull a little of everything wider out. Unfortunately this is the name of the game, you can be on the last piece and have to go back through the entire sheet metal body and readjust. I just think the hood even if it doens't bother on the paint might stand out looking a little too tight vs the rest of the truck. Good luck with it.
@NDB39026 күн бұрын
@ 😞I knew you were going to say that lol. I’m going to pull everything out and just readjust everything. It will probably take me a half day. But what’s a half day or whole day to make it fit I guess.

That Nova came out of a junkyard? And its needed that much work? That particular car something special in terms of limited production, unique history?
@carthageclassiccars22 күн бұрын
Yes this car came out of a junk yard. Its nothing special, but the owner shares the same idea as me if you want to build one the right way find the cheapest one you can, Then plan for the worse . When you find more stuff that the car needs at least you expected it vs spending 10X on what you think is a solid car then its needing almost the same amount of sheet metal.

high end restoration with the WRONG BOLTS,,,not in my shop
@carthageclassiccars26 күн бұрын
Its a resto mod nothing on this car will be original along with the full front and rear quatralink and detroit speed kit, trust me the owner doesn't care as I talked to him and asked if he minded once I found out. Trust me if thats the only complaint on the internet I am happy with the build and completely open about even my small mistakes, can't be 100% perfect like your shop

@@carthageclassiccars and would have taken the same amount of time,,,additionally why not tap the holes in the plate rather than weld nuts,its the little things that make the difference,,,I mean what the hell,you went through the trouble of replacing the hinges,,,wonder did you even try to mount the doors as original ? seems as though you decided they would never work as is ??? not knocking your work,but dont understand your process
@carthageclassiccars25 күн бұрын
@@tomstiel7576 You obviously missed the whole point of the video and at this point don't think you even watched it, the original doors are gone, they have weld hinges, aftermarket door only have bolt hinges. I work to make the best job considering time and outcome for my customers so the weld nuts were more then acceptable with no disadvantage. There are literally so many different ways to accomplish the same task and this is one example. You sir are the perfect example of why most shops don't show their work on because no matter what you do there is someone that is complaining and nit picking the work for literally nothing. There are two opinions that only count in these builds, the builder and the owner, both are happy with this job show in the video.
