I came to Pahrump in February of 1969. It rained for days on end and the area was virtually a lake bottom. I had worked for some small companies in Pahrump but eventually wound up working for the Charles Brown Company in Shoshone in the Chevron station. After several months I was approached by the mine boss at the Warm Springs talc mine in Death Valley. While working there I ran across the likes of Charlie Manson whos truck broke down in the Shoshone area and was looking for someone to repair his GMC van. He approached us at the same Chevron station I had worked at previously. We somewhat knew that he had been traveling to Shoshone to evade the law for at the time unbenounced to us, the Tate-Labianca murders His picture was all over the news that Monday as they had captured him at the movie ranch that weekend and we were amazed that we had came in contact with him. At the time all of the high school kids from Pahrump went to the Death Valley high school in Shoshone and now it's just the opposite. I was escorted out of the Snake Pit bar in Tecopa the same year because the Inyo county deputy, discovered I was only 20 years old at the time Anyway I had worked in about a 50 mile radius of Tecopa for 7 years before moving to Vegas for another 46 years or so

Yah my dad and grandma remembered when Charlie Manson and his group always came to Pahrump to get groceries. Grandma always told don't talk or look at them. The bus was a dually manual. Was mainly drove by one of the Ward boys. The first graduate class in 1974 for the Pahrump Valley High School went to school at Death Valley but graduation as PVHS.

LOVE THIS VIDEO... THANKS WH! Wife and I were in Tecopa yesterday (11/22/22). We decided to explore China Date Ranch an hour before Sunrise, hoping to catch some photos of Coyotes and birds, but even though we walked along the Amargosa River all the way to the Slot Canyon, we only saw one slow waking Coyote. We happened upon him sleeping under a Date Tree and he was so slow waking up, we thought he might have been injured, but after getting blood to his legs, yawning a few times, he finally scurried off. One Rabbit, a few Finches and half a dozen very large Ravens. We explored the Slot Canyon as much as we could, we climbed up the first two rock falls, but then came to the third rock fall which was too much for us OLD FARTS to handle without equipment (68 and 65 years-old, Rock Climbing Days are behind us. The rocks we did climb turned into a Comedy Act and we found ourselves laughing at each other. Which we have enjoyed for 51 years.) We visit Tecopa several times a year, just to get out and explore. We have not experienced the HOT SPRINGS yet. More often than not we stop in and get Coffee and Danish at the Kit Fox Cafe. We wanted to give the STEAKS and BEER restaurant a try, but they are never open when we visit. Weather WAS AMAZING yesterday at China Date Ranch and Tecopa... We began our walk in China Date Ranch about 4:30 a.m. and it was right around 25 degrees, but by noon, the temp was warm enough we were stripping off layers of sweaters and gloves. Wife says she thinks it was 69 degrees yesterday, but it felt much warmer by noon. As we were returning to the China Date Ranch from the Slot Canyon, a man and his wife were headed out to explore the Canyon. The wife was wearing an expensive/quality Safari Leisure Suite, a Pith Helmet out of every Tarzan movie ever made and HIGH HEELS. Not Stilettos, but what looked to be four inch heels. Today explorers to the Slot Canyon are likely to see little 3-4 inch deep "D" impressions in the desert sand. I'd place a healthy bet that she never made it all the way. Unimaginable!

my father in law was county road commissoner of Inyo County in early 1950ties--just north of Tecopa he built and paved the road to the Nevada state line--it created a uproar because there was a cat house just into Nevada--he was teased about it for a long time--he had no idea about the cat house...my neighbor here in Bishop used to live in Tepcopa, knows everybody but the hussy because she moved a year ago...

Have you ever been into the small local library to see if they have a local history section? Sometimes its just newspaper and magazine clippings that the librarian has filed away, but you might find out some really cool stuff that happened in past times that you would never suspect. I bet there is lots of stuff that happened out there in the small but very interesting place. I really love your speculations about what might have been or what local legend suggests once was. Please keep on keeping on! (I hope the improvements around your compound are happening to make life better for you and your sister. I can't help but wonder what interesting additions you make to your already cool home. Think: Wonder Hussy's, and sister's version of Knott's Berry Farm or something like that.)

Good old joshua tree is actually technically not a tree it's a relative of the lily family . I found that out once while in search of the largest known joshua tree (which by the way is speculative as to which one that is) I see tecopa is still attempting to grow . That's fine as it doesn't get too outa control. As for the mud in the area my boyfriend was friends with the former caretaker of the springs at Delights. I was told that the mineral Bentonite was in the clay at the natural springs which has positive health properties. The old Delights had its charm with its old rustic private tubs. Sorry there's no cell signal out there still. I doubt T Mobil works out there as I am a customer lol. The electric bike looks like alot of fun . I'm enjoying your tours of the area. My British guy friend introduced me to Delights spent many a weekend out there and Shoshone.

One of the largest (if not the largest) Joshua trees lives down in LA at the Huntington Library Gardens - - well worth a visit if you're in the area, plan on spending half a day.
@-108-
@-108- Жыл бұрын
This is misinformation. The Joshua tree is not a relative of the lily family. That misnomer likely comes from a childrens' story about a Joshua tree NAMED "Lily," &/or it's relation to the Lily Of The Valley, which is not a true lily, but a member of the Asparagus family. Joshua trees (Y. brevifolia) are species of the genus Yucca. Yucca is a genus of about 40 species of succulent plants in the agave subfamily of the asparagus family (Asparagaceae), native to southern North America.

Best part is you make it interesting, even if what you are presenting isn’t your area of expertise; you are truthful about it and do your best to tell the story. I'm currently in the planning stages of a bikepacking trip from Abiquiu, NM to the San Gabriel Mission in Los Angeles, in honor of the 1829 expedition that Antonio Armijo organized to trade Santa Fe wool goods for California horses and mules,. He is credited for initiating commerce between New Mexico and California. The various routes that were traveled are known as the Old Spanish Trail, however, these were actually a collection of many indigenous trails, that connected the sparse water sources. My planned route will take me through Tecopa, so I've been checking out various RV sites to pitch my tent. Thanks for providing an informative tour of Tecopa. My goal is to ride to Baker and on I-15 to Barstow, Victorville, and Cajon Pass.

Love stories like that! Considering we can only see 0.005% of the spectrum of visible light, who’s to say there aren’t other beings that usually remain undetected. If someone blows a dog whistle and we don’t hear a sound does that mean it doesn’t exist? I would say no, it’s simply occurring at a frequency that is out of our auditory range.

Great video about your town. Looks like you are the official tour guide and marketing consultant. Next road trip in the area we'll stop and support the local economy.

Not so sure I'd get on the ""Death Valley" Unified School District" bus. I think my parents would have to force me to ride it.

I really enjoyed your videos of the mining camp near bishop where I spent two weeks after I retired in 2000 and Goldfield which I visited and enjoyed peeking in the hotel windows and the high school was being rehabilitated and lo and behold you live in tecopa where I spent four months in winter 2000-01. Got my first email address in that trailer that is half library and half welfare office.. the tecopa-francis school was still operating and you got free fresh water from a hose next to the school. Amy ran the resort and you had to go to the crowbar in Shoshone to get a meal. The county hot springs were free and 24 hrs.lots of fond memories

You should post the phone number of that pay phone and have it become like the old Mojave phone booth where people from all over the world called it, hoping someone would answer.

Nice area and rich history despite the toxic soil. Drove thru there decades ago. I won't be poking around with my metal detector that's for sure. Just a stones throw from Pahrump, nice.
