Those are the clearest titanium welds I've ever seen. You should teach a course of your own.

+icecoalman smith Thankyou!! GRB College of Welding has the course on the metal, possibly in 20 years time if I know as much about the metal as Gerry the owner does then it wouldn't be a bad idea, but until then I'm better as the student

you use the saw because a grinder would put to much unnecessary heat into the metal?
@FieldRes
@FieldRes 8 жыл бұрын
+John Demkovich Friction from the grinder creates heat, interacts with the atmosphere forming oxides; it over heats the material. Plus grinding it creates massive bright sparks that creates big fires! and incredible smokey stuff. When I renew my welding tickets, I zip cut the pipe to get the coupons and the stuff is just terrible. Smokey, bright, and incredibly difficult to try and cut through. Terrible stuff. Its easier to file the material, its soft. a Reciprocating saw is incredible as well. It really does a great job removing material.

What other metal would you say welds like titanium?
@FieldRes
@FieldRes Жыл бұрын
It is tough to say because the chemical composition is purely titanium with a trace amount of other alloys (minimal)., even zirconium is purely zirconium, while stainless, duplex and nickel alloys are a multitude of varying different alloys, but a great portion is made up of chromium and nickel. Now when it comes to the technique., you can use a keyhole dab technique, like one would use on a nickel, duplex, super duplex or certain stainless alloys. It is actually easier to weld titanium than it is to use the same techniques used on titanium, for welding other metals. They are more effort, flow different, and at times require longer protective shielding of the deposited metal to achieve no heat tint.

Still me killing your patience. I can see a green tube on the top of the pipe/s which I think goes to the purgeye 300, I can see no venting hole in the same spot. Apart from a slightly oxidezed pipe which I guess is for pipe holding purposes only I can work out barely a 0% of the purging arrangement on the bottom of the pipe/s; and, even after having watched your video about exotic alloys welding(I'm mainly referring to the one mostly about inconel with a really interesting digression about aluminium and walking the cup tecnique), I cannot say for sure which ppm of oxigen you set as your goal. Briefly I'm both amazed and perplexed of how the f**k you managed to achieve such a perfect purge. Please enlighten me if you will. I reckon those very light brownish discoloration spots are enough away from the heat affected zone, so they're miles away form being an issue. Am I right? And finally the probably the most newbie's suited question of all. What the fuck is that thin, irregular line in the middle of the root pass that can been seen less than a minute before making me happy with Gilmour's guitar(7:00 onward)? Take care(...of your nerves, ...after reading my comment) Cheers

+makirompe What I'm actually doing is the purgeEye just lets me know when my purge is good at low ppm. When it is, I remove the tape and now the argon vents out from how much tape I am removing. I am using a technique that is improper for the titanium, because looking through the gap overheats the metal and you have to remove more tape off which just lets the atmosphere in, so the technique is 'poor and improper' for this metal, but I was able to risk it and get away with it. but rather than remove a full side on the 6", I had a clear lens taped to the top section and looked through and removes from 6 to 9 oclock and welded the 1/4. The 2" was different, I removed 1/2 of the tape but with this, when I did the weld and protected away from the atmosphere, I just shut the purge off and everything external and internal then cooled the pipe down, cleaned, prepped, and then on went the gas again then the monitor did its job and then back to welding again. The bottom pipe was hastelloy, I have the titanium pipe taped to the hastelloy pipe because I can't weld them together. but the vent line was at the bottom of the hastelloy pipe. With the titanium, I am thinking about the Heat input, the purge quality/ppm of oxygen and the cleanliness/oxide removal. But in this video, heat input, techniques for heat input and interpass temp I scrapped because If I followed it perfectly then I would be there for a lot longer or else just lost interest in practicing all together, especially that 6" which just takes forever with welding, cooling, cleaning, prepping, it takes forever. Purge quality, that looking through the gap technique is not the technique you want to be using on this metal cause you need to remove too much tape and it overheats the metal with the technique, but intentionally I'd like to have less than 25 ppm, but those lightish brown spots would be a reflection on removing too much tape, which Im not concerned with those spots, they're not much of an issue to me especially practicing just to practice the metal rather than practice to be extremely strict towards a job. The oxides are a huge issue too, those need to be removed otherwise I'd have a great deal of heat tint formation. Thinking back, I should see if I cleaned far enough back to remove oxides away from the HAZ so all metal in the weld zone and heat affected zone does not have a single passivation layer, nor can heat up and form oxides - cause oxides within the molecular structure contain an atom of oxygen, which when the metal elevates in temperature, the oxygen will interact with the metal and form thicker oxide layer to protect the metal. The line is the vertex of the weld bead, like a peak, its funny to look at but it is the equivalence to a really concentrated reflection; that picture was shot through the gap of the pipe, but ultimately it would be the peak or vertex of the weld bead and depending how straight the line is, is a reflection on how precise I was feeding into the middle of the root.

Do you feather 🪶 the tacks?
@FieldRes
@FieldRes Жыл бұрын
The tacks would not be full penetratuon root tacks, they would have been "bridge tacks' which would have been removed prior to welding that section.
