Clutch to clutch means it has no bands. It shifts by applying a set of clutches one at a time to achieve the desired ratio. Also it works off of what we call shift adapts. Therefore the clutch pack timing has to be perfect or you may get a slip or hard shift.

The old TH-350, Th-400, TH-2004R, and TH-700R4 all worked basically the same, but WITHOUT all this electronic B.S., and they worked just fine for many miles. The electronic bullcrap is completely unnecessary.

I think you skipped a step where you are supposed to TURN OFF THE IGNITION completely after the fast learn. You kept letting it sit, but you still had the key ON... After the fast learn, turn the ignition (key) OFF, with the shift lever in the PARK position, and then OPEN THE DRIVERS DOOR. Then let it sit for at least 3 minutes.. Then, after that, you can restart it and you will NOT have the false neutral that you were experiencing.

oh wao good information! I did my car and I got scared because I end up with not gears at all. but it did all the movements to learn so what I did was disconnecting the negative cable from my battery and the car went back to normal. I wonder if the fast learn work or not or if I have to do it again the way you explain?

These transmissions are complete garbage, and all that electronic bullshit is unnecessary. The older TH-350's, 400's, 200's, and 700's worked just fine without ANY electronics controlling them, except for a lockup converter in the later ones that needed ONE wire to operate it.

@@davelowets I can understand how you might believe that... but these newer transmissions have done incredible things to make cars more reliable, and more fuel efficient.. I would agree with you that many of the hydraulically shifted GM transmissions were pretty darn good... but then you lost me completely with "700R4". You want to talk about the BIGGEST mistake GM ever made... that trans was it... Think about this... GM had to drop that turd from their line up when the Corvette started making 195HP back in the early 90's... Think about that... GM's own engineers said "put it out to pasture as it's completely unreliable at 195HP".... LOT's off issues with the TV cable.. Lot's of issues with the governors... lot's of issues with worn TV valves and the sleeve in the valve body... lot's of issues with the 4th clutch pressure switch diaphragm's... losing 3rd and 4th clutch packs quite easily... The 700 was the BIGGEST turd of a transmission GM ever made without a doubt, with the electronically controlled 4L60E right behind it. The newer 6 speeds are the cat's meow.. electronics and all... I LOVE electronically controlled because it means I can tune it with a lap top... and there is no need to drop the pan..

Hiram just built a 6l80 and I have a idle surge after build and no codes . Taking off from a stop its lurching in and out of first . Manual shifting does the same but after 10 mph it shifts good and firm through all the gears and as long as I don’t stop it shifts fine 1st thru 6th

What is the difference between a 6L80-E and a 6L90-E transmission? Which is better and why?
@LucifersDeathSquad6 жыл бұрын
bighud45 - the 90 comes on hd trucks and is bigger and better. The 80 is on 1500 trucks
@michaelmagyar57346 жыл бұрын
Also note that the 6L80 has a retarded behavior when selecting Manual mode from Drive mode. If shifted to Manual mode while in gears 3, 4, 5, and 6, the transmission DOWNSHIFTS 1 or 2 gears because its designers read your mind and decided you must have wanted that! For the 6L90 the trans stays in the current gear when shifting into Manual mode, until you use the paddle shift to instruct otherwise. Apparently there were different philosophies in play as the two design teams brought their respective products to market. 6L80 users were assumed to need divine guidance about which gear they actually wanted.
@jamest.50015 жыл бұрын
bighud45 they are basically the same transmission, just the 90 is rated for more torqe handling capacity, may have different shift personalty, the 6L90 usually used in heavier trucks.. The 6 is gears, 90 is torque capacity,

Can you do this with your Maxidas S708 Scanner?????
@jHuff-dm7lz10 жыл бұрын
It don't matter because the Shift Solenoid One will not shut off. (Burned out) it won't exhaust. If you look at the solenoid logic chart, SS1 has to be off while SS2 has to be ON for forward gears. SS1's state will not change, Second, I'm new to the Maxidas S708--you used a verus--were is the fast learn function on the scan tool......I was just borrowing it when I used it to see the logic (on, off) of the solenoids.
@jHuff-dm7lz10 жыл бұрын
***** yea, I looked under Special Functions, it was there. I ran the truck through the "reset adapts", but nothing happened, I'll try again latter I was in a hurry.

***** A little history: this is a GMC LD/truck Savanna 3500, 4.8 (v8) L20; RPO MYD 6l90 transmission. About, a little over a year ago, Hurricane Sandy blew through New Jersey. This truck was one of it's victims. This is a FLOOD truck which means that the transmission was full of water and by the time I got it, full of rust. So, up for auction it goes, in complete Jersey fashion. I go to the transmission and the customer says, I want the clutches replaced because they won't last after getting wet, and I want to put the truck back into service. I said, OK, sounds easy: just do a quick re-clutch and reseal New Banner kit and the whole things comes together easy because the truck only has 7000 miles on it. I don't need bushing, the pump has got to be OK, everything is pretty brand new, just need new clutches because the old ones are water soaked. Enough said; the shop installs the transmission; no forward gears, got reverse, but no forward gears. I did look at the video for rebuilding the 6l80 and saw the piston housing inspection for the 1-2-3-4 3-5 reverse piston, it looked OK. It could still be cracked, maybe I just didn't see it. Finally, the original tech goes on vacation and I get called to look at the truck at the shop. I get an Autel MaxiDas S708 and start following the solenoid on-off logic chart. I saw in a 6l80 Webinar that the Shift solenoid 1 and 2 control the forward and reverse gears of the truck. I put the truck in "M" for manual shift. I used the Button on the Column shift to shift the truck from 1-6. I noticed that the SS1 would no go off. The ASTG manual for the transmission solenoid logic says that SS1 must change state to the off position for 1 through 6 gear. SS1 never changed to OFF... When I tried to manually turn it off with the scan tool the tool "exceeded limits, Hydraulic pressure present"........................and just kind of flickered. And that is where we are today............... I told the shop owner i.e. truck owner to order a new Techm ($500).
@jHuff-dm7lz10 жыл бұрын
Right, came in --no forward gears-- went out--no forward gears after rebuild. I got four more trucks to go....... Another one, let's call it the red pickup is the same thing: FLOOD truck. BUT, he put a used "Junk Yard" transmission in it. OK, The shop owner goes and gets a 2013 Sierra V8 L96; MYD 6l90 truck. He calls me, do a re-clutch like the other. OK, I said. How much, he asks? $1300 for the whole job, I said. Never mind, I'll get a junk yard for $1100 says the shop owner. Two days later the shop owner calls me, and asks? "why does it seem like it's shifting into neutral in first gear". Scratching my head, well it could be a couple of things, I'll look at some trouble shooting issues and see what's up with the neutral during first gear thing. A couple of guys have said it's the check balls in the valve body, others think it's a sticking regulator valve, or a bad CPC4 solenoid, don't know without testing some. Moral of the story: stay away from Flood trucks unless you got money for all of the electronics.
